Chapter 12: The Fifth Signature

Daniel took the photograph from my hands.

He studied the names carefully.

"There's something wrong with this.""

I looked at him.

"What?""

"The dates.""

He pointed to the bottom corner.

The photograph was dated September 12, twenty-three years earlier.

That was the year Marcus was born.

But the note beside his signature had been added much later.

"Someone altered this photograph," Daniel said.

Patricia leaned closer.

"Not the photograph. The writing.""

She turned it over.

"Your father used to write dates in blue ink. The note is in red.""

I stared at the names.

"Why would Marcus sign an agreement before he was old enough to understand it?""

"He didn't," Patricia answered.

She looked at the fifth signature.

"Someone added his name after the agreement was made.""

Daniel opened the blue cabinet again.

He searched through the remaining folders until he found a document titled FAMILY PROTECTION AGREEMENT.

The date matched the photograph.

He read the first page.

Then his expression changed.

"What?"" I asked.

He placed the document on the desk.

"This agreement was intended to protect the children from Robert Reed's financial activities.""

Patricia nodded.

"That's why I signed it.""

Daniel continued reading.

"Robert was suspected of diverting company funds. Richard and Helen agreed to place certain assets into separate trusts for the children.""

"Which children?"" I asked.

"Charlotte and Nia.""

I looked at Patricia.

"Why was Marcus added later?""

She shook her head.

"Because someone wanted him to appear entitled to the assets.""

Daniel turned another page.

There was a paragraph describing the conditions under which the trust could be accessed.

One sentence had been underlined.

No beneficiary may transfer, pledge, or assign an interest in the protected assets without the written consent of both surviving trustees.

I frowned.

"Who were the trustees?""

Daniel checked the signatures.

"Your father and your mother.""

"But they're both dead.""

"Which means the trust should have transferred to the independent successor trustee.""

"Who?""

He looked at the next page.

"Evelyn Carter.""

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Evelyn had been placed in control of the assets.

She had been trusted to protect them.

Instead, she had apparently helped Marcus gain access.

"Can she still control the trust?"" I asked.

"Not if we establish that she breached her fiduciary duties.""

Daniel photographed every page.

Then he found something else.

A smaller envelope was taped to the inside cover.

It contained a single handwritten note.

For Nia, if she ever learns the truth.

I unfolded it.

My father's handwriting.

Sweetheart,

There are two versions of our family's history.

The one I told you was designed to protect you.

The other was designed to protect everyone else.

I regret the difference.

If Marcus has found the trust, he may try to convince you that he has a right to it.

He does not.

He was born into a family that once betrayed ours, but that was not his crime.

His crime was choosing to repeat it.

The original trust is not hidden in a bank.

It is hidden in the one place I knew nobody would think to search.

I read the final line twice.

Ask your mother where she buried the key.

I looked at Patricia.

"Did you know about a key?""

She shook her head.

"No.""

Charlotte picked up the photograph.

"Maybe it's in the old house.""

"What old house?""

"The house where our mother lived before she married Richard.""

I turned toward Daniel.

"Does it still exist?""

He checked his phone.

"Your father sold the property twenty years ago.""

"To whom?""

Daniel searched the old property records.

Then he looked up.

"To a company called Reed Property Holdings.""

I stared.

"Robert Reed?""

"Most likely.""

Patricia closed her eyes.

"That was his company.""

Daniel continued searching.

"The property was transferred again five years later. The current owner is a private development group.""

I felt frustration rising.

"Can we get access?""

"We can try.""

My phone vibrated.

A message from Marcus.

*Marcus:* We need to stop this before it gets out of control.

I ignored it.

Another message arrived.

*Marcus:* Your sister is lying to you.

Then a third.

*Marcus:* Ask her what happened to the baby.

I looked at Charlotte.

She had been watching my face.

"What?""

I showed her the message.

Her expression changed immediately.

"What baby?""

I stared at her.

"That's what I was hoping you could tell me.""

Charlotte slowly shook her head.

"I don't know what he's talking about.""

Patricia looked suddenly frightened.

"Charlotte, don't.""

My sister turned toward her.

"Don't what?""

Patricia lowered herself onto the wooden chair.

"There's something I never told you.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"About what?""

Patricia looked at Charlotte.

"When you were adopted, there was another child.""

Charlotte froze.

"What?""

"A boy.""

The room went silent.

"Your mother was pregnant again shortly before she died," Patricia continued.

"She gave birth in secret.""

I stared.

"My mother had another baby?""

Patricia nodded.

"She believed the child would be safer away from the family.""

"Where is he?""

Patricia looked down.

"I don't know.""

Charlotte stepped backward.

"You're telling me I have another sibling?""

"Yes.""

I sat down.

For the second time that day, the floor seemed to move beneath me.

A sister.

A brother.

A mother who had spent her life hiding children from people who wanted to control them.

Daniel broke the silence.

"Do we know the child's name?""

Patricia nodded.

"Your mother called him Samuel.""

I looked at Charlotte.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Charlotte's eyes filled.

"I didn't know.""

Patricia reached into her handbag and removed a photograph.

It showed my mother sitting in a hospital bed, holding a newborn baby.

On the back was written:

Samuel Carter. October 14.

I felt my chest tighten.

That date was six months before my mother died.

"Where was he placed?"" Daniel asked.

Patricia shook her head.

"Your mother arranged for him to be raised by a family outside New York.""

"Which family?""

"I never found out.""

I looked at the photograph.

The baby had a small birthmark beneath his left ear.

Then I noticed the bracelet around his wrist.

A hospital identification band.

The name printed on it was not Samuel Carter.

It was *Samuel Reed*.

I looked up.

"Why would my mother use the Reed surname?""

Patricia's face drained of color.

"Because Robert wanted the child.""

"Why?""

She stared at the photograph.

"Because Robert believed the boy was his.""

Charlotte looked at her.

"Was he?""

Patricia hesitated.

Then she said, "No.""

Daniel went completely still.

"Then who was the father?""

Patricia looked at me.

"Your father.""

I closed my eyes.

Another secret.

Another child.

Another piece of my family that had been hidden.

But something about the photograph bothered me.

The date.

The hospital.

The surname.

I took out my phone and enlarged the image.

The hospital bracelet had a small logo.

St. Vincent's Medical Center.

I remembered the hospital.

It was where my father had died.

I looked at Daniel.

"Can you find the birth records?""

He nodded.

"With the right legal authorization.""

"Then get it.""

He took the photograph.

Patricia reached for my hand.

"Nia, there's something you need to understand.""

I looked at her.

"Your father wasn't trying to hide Samuel because he was ashamed of him.""

"Then why?""

"Because he believed Samuel had inherited something dangerous.""

"What?""

Patricia looked toward the blue cabinet.

"Something connected to the original trust.""

Before she could continue, Daniel's phone rang.

He answered.

"Brooks.""

A pause.

Then his expression changed.

"What do you mean the records are missing?""

He listened.

"Since when?""

Another pause.

Then he looked directly at me.

"The storage facility manager just called.""

I stood.

"What happened?""

Daniel lowered his phone.

"Someone entered the unit after we arrived.""

"How?""

"They had a duplicate access key.""

"Who?""

He looked at Patricia.

Then at Charlotte.

Finally, he answered.

"Evelyn Carter.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Where is she now?""

Daniel checked the last message.

"She left the property twenty minutes ago.""

I looked around the storage unit.

The filing cabinet was open.

The photographs were scattered.

And the small envelope containing my father's final note was missing.

But the worst discovery was waiting on the desk.

A new document had been placed there.

It was a birth certificate.

For Samuel Reed.

The father's name was blank.

The mother's name was Helen Carter.

And the registered guardian was listed as:

*Marcus Reed.*

I stared at the document.

Marcus had never told me he had a child.

He had never mentioned Samuel.

But the registration date was twelve years earlier.

The same year we married.

My phone rang.

Marcus.

I answered.

His voice was calm.

Almost gentle.

"Nia, I think it's time we stopped pretending.""

"What do you want?""

"I want my son back.""

My blood went cold.

"Samuel is your son?""

A long silence followed.

Then Marcus said:

"Yes.""

I gripped the phone.

"How?""

He gave a quiet laugh.

"That's the part your father never wanted you to know.""

I looked at the birth certificate again.

Then Marcus delivered the final blow.

"Samuel isn't just my son, Nia.""

He paused.

"He's also the legal heir to the Carter family trust.""

May you like

And before I could ask how that was possible, he added:

*"Your father made sure of it before he died.""*
