Chapter 7: The Woman Holding the Gun

Vanessa's hand was shaking.

But the gun wasn't.

It was pointed directly at my chest.

"Put it down, Vanessa," Daniel said carefully.

She laughed.

"Do you think I'm stupid?""

"No. I think you're frightened.""

"Then you understand why I'm holding this.""

Behind her, Evelyn stood beside the shattered jewelry box. Her face was pale, and one hand was pressed against the wall for support.

I couldn't stop looking at Vanessa.

That cream blazer.

That perfect hair.

The diamond ring Marcus had hidden beneath my pillow.

She looked like the kind of woman who belonged in a corporate magazine, not someone's bedroom with a gun.

"Vanessa," I said, "what do you want?""

"The recording.""

"Why?""

"Because your father left something in it that could destroy Marcus.""

I glanced at Daniel.

He was standing slightly to my right, keeping his hands visible.

"Then perhaps you should let us hear it," I said.

Vanessa shook her head.

"Don't play games with me.""

"I'm not. You said my father didn't die naturally. If you know something, tell me.""

Her expression changed.

For a moment, the anger disappeared.

Something much closer to desperation took its place.

"Your father was going to expose everything," she said.

"Everything about what?""

"The money. The trust. The people who were involved.""

"Who?""

Vanessa looked at Evelyn.

Evelyn lowered her eyes.

"Tell her," Vanessa snapped.

Evelyn shook her head.

"Please, Vanessa. Not like this.""

Vanessa stepped toward her.

"You've had twelve years to tell her.""

I felt a chill.

"Tell me what?""

Evelyn looked at me.

"Your father discovered that someone had been altering the records of the family trust. He believed Marcus was involved.""

"And you?""

"I knew about the irregularities.""

"Did you help him?""

She didn't answer.

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"She did more than help him. She helped cover it up.""

Daniel shifted his weight.

"Vanessa, lower the weapon. We can discuss this with the authorities.""

"The authorities?"" Vanessa's eyes widened.

"You think they don't know? You think people haven't already been paid?""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Who paid them?""

She looked at me.

"Your husband.""

A sound came from downstairs.

The front door.

Then footsteps.

Marcus appeared at the top of the staircase.

His face changed when he saw the gun.

"Vanessa!""

She turned toward him.

For the first time, her expression broke completely.

"You told me she wouldn't be here.""

Marcus looked at me.

"Nia, move away from her.""

I almost laughed.

"That's your concern?""

"Put the gun down, Vanessa.""

"You promised me!""

"Not now.""

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"You promised I would have the company. You promised we would leave together.""

Marcus stepped closer.

"You're making things worse.""

"You're the one who made things worse!""

She lifted her left hand.

The diamond ring flashed beneath the hallway lights.

"You gave me this. You told me I was going to be your wife.""

Marcus's expression hardened.

"That was before you started making demands.""

Vanessa stared at him.

Then she turned toward me.

"He told me your marriage was finished. He said the company would be mine after the divorce. He said you were just a name on some old paperwork.""

I looked at Marcus.

"Is that true?""

He didn't answer.

Vanessa laughed through her tears.

"I gave him everything. I opened the shell company. I signed the invoices.

I moved the money. And now he's trying to make me the only person responsible.""

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"Did you just admit to transferring company funds?""

Vanessa seemed to realize what she had said.

Her grip tightened.

Marcus moved toward her.

"Stop talking.""

She pointed the gun at him.

"Don't you dare tell me to stop.""

I stepped forward.

"Vanessa, listen to me. Whatever Marcus promised you, he lied.""

She looked at me.

"You don't know anything.""

"I know he gave you a ring engraved with his initials. I know he used you to move fourteen million dollars. And I know that when the truth comes out, he'll blame you for all of it.""

Marcus's voice turned cold.

"Enough, Nia.""

I ignored him.

"You're not protecting yourself by pointing that gun at me. You're protecting the man who already betrayed you.""

Vanessa's eyes moved toward Marcus.

He was standing very still.

Then he said something that changed her expression.

"Vanessa, you know what happens if you tell them about the account in Zurich.""

Her face went white.

I looked between them.

"What account?""

Marcus didn't answer.

Vanessa lowered the gun slightly.

"Don't.""

"Tell her," Marcus said.

"Shut up.""

"Tell her where the money went.""

Vanessa began crying.

I realized what was happening.

Marcus was trying to turn her against herself.

He was offering her up as a sacrifice.

And he was doing it while pretending to calm her down.

Daniel took a small step forward.

"Vanessa, put the gun on the floor.""

She looked at him.

Then at me.

Finally, she lowered the weapon.

The moment it touched the carpet, Daniel moved.

He kicked it away and stepped between us.

Marcus rushed forward.

"Are you insane?""

Vanessa sank onto the floor.

Her hands covered her face.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Evelyn began crying.

Not quietly.

Not delicately.

She cried like someone who had spent years holding something inside and had finally lost the strength to contain it.

I turned toward her.

"What happened to my father?""

She looked at me.

"Marcus didn't kill him.""

I felt a strange disappointment.

Not because I wanted Marcus to be guilty.

But because I had begun to understand that the truth was going to be worse than anything I imagined.

"Then who did?""

Evelyn looked toward Marcus.

He shook his head.

"Mother, don't.""

She swallowed.

"Your father was given medication that night. Someone changed his prescription.""

My stomach dropped.

"Who?""

"I don't know.""

Marcus stepped forward.

"She's confused.""

Evelyn looked at him.

"No, Marcus. I'm tired.""

She turned back to me.

"Your father had a heart condition. His medication was carefully monitored. The night he died, his dosage was changed.""

Daniel immediately took out his phone.

"Do you have evidence?""

Evelyn nodded.

"I kept the original prescription records.""

Marcus grabbed her arm.

"Mother, stop.""

She pulled away.

"Don't touch me.""

It was the first time I had ever heard Evelyn speak to him that way.

She walked into her bedroom and returned carrying a small envelope.

"I was supposed to destroy these," she whispered.

She handed them to Daniel.

I looked at the envelope.

Then at Marcus.

He wasn't looking at me.

He was looking at the papers.

And for the first time, my husband looked like a man who knew his entire life was about to collapse.

But before Daniel could open the envelope, Vanessa spoke.

"There's something else you need to know.""

I turned.

She wiped her cheeks.

"Marcus didn't change your father's medication.""

"Who did?""

Vanessa looked directly at Evelyn.

"Your mother-in-law did.""

The room went silent.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

And Marcus smiled.

May you like

A small, cold smile.

As though the one person he had been trying to protect had finally been exposed.
