Chapter 9: The Woman Who Came Back From the Dead
Patricia Reed stood outside Evelyn's townhouse for almost a full minute.
Nobody moved.
Not Marcus.
Not Vanessa.
Not even Evelyn.
Then Patricia walked toward the front door.
Her steps were slow and deliberate.
She didn't look frightened.
She looked like someone who had spent years preparing for this exact moment.
When the doorbell rang, Evelyn whispered something I couldn't hear.
Marcus stepped backward.
I noticed.
And suddenly I understood that the man who had spent twelve years controlling every conversation in my life was afraid of the woman standing outside.
Daniel opened the door.
Patricia entered.
She was in her late fifties, wearing a dark gray coat and carrying a leather handbag.
Her eyes moved around the room.
First to Evelyn.
Then to Marcus.
Finally, they settled on me.
"Nia," she said.
Her voice was softer than I expected.
I couldn't answer.
She looked at the photograph in her hand.
"I suppose you've been told a few things about me.""
"That you were dead.""
Patricia gave a humorless smile.
"That was convenient for everyone.""
Marcus stepped forward.
"Why are you here?""
Patricia looked at him.
"To finish what your father-in-law started.""
"Don't.""
"You've had twelve years, Marcus.""
He shook his head.
"Not here.""
Patricia turned toward me.
"Your father asked me to find you if anything happened to him.""
I stared at her.
"Why didn't you come before?""
"Because I was afraid.""
"Of Marcus?""
She looked at him.
"Of all of them.""
Evelyn stood near the staircase.
"Patricia, please.""
Patricia's expression hardened.
"You don't get to ask me for anything.""
I looked between them.
"How do you know Evelyn?""
Patricia set her handbag on the table.
"Because she helped your father keep me away from my son.""
Marcus laughed bitterly.
"You're the one who left.""
"I was told you were better off without me.""
"You abandoned me.""
Patricia's eyes filled with tears.
"I was twenty-two years old, Marcus. Your father threatened to have me arrested for stealing company funds. Evelyn told me that if I stayed, you would be taken away from me permanently.""
Evelyn shook her head.
"That's not how it happened.""
Patricia turned toward her.
"Then tell the truth.""
Evelyn lowered her eyes.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Patricia looked at me.
"Your father wasn't the man you remember.""
I felt my chest tighten.
"Please don't tell me what kind of man my father was. I want to know what happened to him.""
Patricia nodded.
"Three weeks before his death, he contacted me. He said he had discovered that Marcus was using the family company to move money through several offshore entities.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"Did you have evidence?""
"Yes.""
She opened her handbag and removed a thick envelope.
Inside were copies of bank statements, handwritten notes, and photographs of several documents.
"Your father gave me these.""
I examined the first page.
The name of a company appeared at the top.
*Northbridge Capital Partners.*
I recognized it.
It was the private company Marcus had mentioned earlier.
Daniel looked at the documents.
"Northbridge was dissolved eight years ago.""
"On paper," Patricia replied.
"Its assets were transferred into another entity.""
"Which one?""
Patricia looked at me.
"V&M Strategic Consulting.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
The company Vanessa had used to receive fourteen million dollars.
Daniel flipped through the pages.
"This is significant.""
Patricia nodded.
"Your father believed Marcus was using V&M to hide money that had originally belonged to Northbridge.""
"Where did the money come from?"" I asked.
Patricia hesitated.
"From an insurance settlement.""
I frowned.
"What insurance settlement?""
"Your mother's.""
My blood went cold.
"My mother?""
Patricia nodded.
"After Helen's accident, the family received a substantial insurance payment. Your father placed the money into a protected account.""
I stared at her.
"How much?""
"At the time? Nearly twenty million dollars.""
Daniel looked up sharply.
"That money was never reported as part of the family trust.""
"Because it was supposed to be held for Charlotte and Nia.""
I shook my head.
"Why would my father hide money that belonged to us?""
Patricia looked at me.
"Because he believed someone was trying to take it.""
"Who?""
She glanced at Evelyn.
Then at Marcus.
"Both of them.""
Evelyn sank into a chair.
Marcus laughed.
"This is absurd.""
Patricia removed another document.
"Then explain this.""
She placed it on the table.
It was a transfer authorization dated four days before my father's death.
The amount was $3.2 million.
The recipient was a private account in Zurich.
The authorization bore Evelyn's signature.
Daniel studied it.
"Mrs. Carter?""
Evelyn looked at the document.
"I didn't transfer that money.""
Patricia's expression remained cold.
"Then why was your signature used?""
"I don't know.""
Marcus suddenly reached for the paper.
Daniel pulled it away.
"Don't touch it.""
Marcus turned toward Patricia.
"You've been waiting years to do this.""
"Yes.""
"To ruin me?""
"To stop you.""
Patricia's voice cracked.
"You used my name. You used my son. You used Helen. And when your father-in-law discovered what you had done, you made sure he couldn't speak.""
I stared at Marcus.
"Did you change my father's medication?""
He looked at me.
"No.""
"Did you know someone had?""
He hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
Patricia turned toward me.
"Marcus didn't change the medication.""
"Then who did?""
She looked at Evelyn.
Evelyn began crying.
"I didn't mean for him to die.""
The words were barely audible.
But everyone heard them.
I felt something inside me break.
"What did you do?""
Evelyn covered her mouth.
"I only wanted to make him sleep. He was going to report everything. He was going to destroy Marcus.""
"How?""
She shook her head.
"I was told the medication would calm him.""
"Who told you that?""
She looked at Marcus.
He stepped backward.
"Mother, don't.""
I stared at him.
"Who told her?""
Evelyn began shaking.
"Marcus gave me the medication.""
The room went silent.
Marcus's face turned red.
"That's a lie.""
"You said it was prescribed by his doctor.""
"Mother!""
"You told me he needed to rest. You said he was having another episode.""
Patricia stepped forward.
"Did you know the dosage was wrong?""
Evelyn shook her head violently.
"No. I swear I didn't.""
Daniel immediately took out his phone.
"I need to contact the authorities.""
Marcus moved toward the door.
One of the security officers blocked him.
"Sir, stay where you are.""
Marcus looked at me.
"Nia, you can't seriously believe them.""
I stared at the man I had married.
"Your mother just admitted she gave my father unauthorized medication.""
"She was confused.""
"Your biological mother says you knew about the money.""
"She's a liar.""
"Vanessa admitted you used her to move company funds.""
"She's protecting herself.""
I took a step toward him.
"Is there anyone in this room you haven't betrayed?""
He said nothing.
Patricia reached into her handbag again.
She removed a small envelope and handed it to me.
"This belonged to your mother.""
I opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
My mother was holding a newborn baby.
On the back, she had written:
Charlotte, my first miracle. I will find a way to bring you home.
My eyes filled.
Then I noticed something else.
A second photograph was tucked behind the first.
It showed my mother standing outside a hospital.
She was holding my hand.
I was perhaps five years old.
Standing beside us was a young woman.
I recognized her immediately.
Charlotte.
My sister.
But the date on the photograph made no sense.
It had been taken only six months before my mother died.
I looked at Patricia.
"Charlotte knew my mother?""
"Yes.""
"Then why didn't she tell me?""
Patricia's expression softened.
"Because she was afraid that the truth would destroy you.""
I looked at the photograph again.
My mother hadn't simply kept her daughter a secret.
She had been seeing her.
She had been trying to bring her back into our family.
"Where is Charlotte now?""
Patricia looked toward the front door.
"She's waiting outside.""
I turned.
A woman stood in the doorway.
Dark hair.
Brown eyes.
A familiar smile.
She looked almost exactly like my mother.
And in her hands was a thick envelope.
"Nia," she whispered.
I couldn't move.
She stepped forward.
"I know this is a lot to take in.""
I swallowed.
"You're Charlotte?""
She nodded.
Then she looked at Marcus.
"I also know why he married you.""
Marcus's face went completely still.
Charlotte opened the envelope.
Inside was a legal document bearing my father's signature.
"Your father didn't leave me the money because I was his first daughter," she said.
I looked at the document.
"He left it to me because I was the only person who could legally prove that he had another heir.""
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
Charlotte looked directly at me.
"It means your father's will was changed six months before he died.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"Changed how?""
Charlotte placed the document on the table.
"Your father left the controlling interest in Carter Holdings to someone neither of you expected.""
I stared at the signature.
Then I read the beneficiary's name.
My hands began trembling.
It wasn't Charlotte.
It wasn't me.
It wasn't Marcus.
It was *Evelyn Carter*.
I slowly lifted my eyes.
Evelyn was crying.
Marcus was smiling.
And Daniel was staring at the document as though he had just discovered the biggest lie in the history of our family.
Then Charlotte said:
"That's not the real will.""
She reached into the envelope and removed another document.
"This is the one your father signed the day before he died.""
I looked down.
May you like
At the bottom of the page was a single sentence written in my father's handwriting.
*Everything belongs to Nia, provided she never marries Marcus Reed.*
