Chapter 2: The Man Behind the Car

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The sound of Tyler's car keys hitting the hardwood floor seemed impossibly loud.

Dad stared at Vanessa.

“What does that mean?””

She shook her head.

“Michael, you're misunderstanding.””

“Then explain it.””

“It's a private arrangement.””

“Five thousand dollars from my daughter's medical account is not a private arrangement.””

Tyler bent down to retrieve his keys.

Dad pointed toward the chair.

“Sit down.””

“I'm an adult.””

“And you're sitting down.””

Tyler looked at Vanessa for help.

She stepped forward, but Dad raised his hand.

“Not another word until I understand where every dollar went.””

I watched Tyler slowly lower himself into the chair.

My father opened the bank transaction details again.

“Who is this man?””

Tyler rubbed his forehead.

“His name is Derek.””

“Derek what?””

“Derek Collins.””

“Why did you send him five thousand dollars?””

Tyler looked at Vanessa.

She closed her eyes.

That small gesture told me more than any explanation could have.

Dad stood up.

“Vanessa, I want the truth.””

She put her glass on the bookshelf.

“Derek helped Tyler get the car.””

“By selling it?””

“By arranging the purchase.””

Dad frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Tyler finally spoke.

“I had a deal with him.””

“What deal?””

Tyler stared at his shoes.

“I owed him money.””

“From gambling?””

He nodded.

Dad exhaled slowly.

“How much?””

Tyler didn't answer.

“Tyler!””

“Twenty-eight thousand.””

I felt my stomach turn.

Twenty-eight thousand dollars.

He had gambled away enough money to buy a small car, and instead of admitting what he had done, he had allowed Vanessa to empty my medical account.

Dad leaned against his desk.

“And the five thousand?””

Tyler swallowed.

“Derek wanted it before he released the car.””

“Released it?””

“It's complicated.””

“No. It isn't.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Michael, I was trying to prevent something terrible from happening.””

Dad turned toward her.

“By stealing money?””

“He was being threatened!””

The words came out so loudly that even Tyler looked surprised.

I stared at her.

“Who was threatening him?””

Vanessa pressed her fingers against her forehead.

“People he owed money to.””

“People who run an online betting account?”” Dad asked.

She looked away.

Tyler suddenly stood.

“Can we stop talking about this like I'm some criminal?””

I laughed once.

It wasn't because anything was funny.

“You spent my eye treatment money on a car while owing money to gamblers. What exactly should we call that?””

He glared at me.

“You don't know anything about what I've been dealing with.””

“I know what I've been dealing with.””

I pointed toward my eyes.

“I have been going to hospitals since I was sixteen. I have been saving every dollar because the doctor said my condition could get worse. And you bought a sports car.””

Tyler clenched his jaw.

“You can still see.””

The room went completely still.

Dad looked at him.

“What did you just say?””

Tyler seemed to realize how cruel the words sounded.

“I didn't mean—”

“Yes, you did,” I interrupted.

My eyes filled, but I refused to look down.

“You looked at me and decided that because I haven't completely lost my eyesight, my treatment money was available for you.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Enough. You're making him feel worse.””

Dad turned toward her.

“She's the one who has to live with what you've done.””

Vanessa's voice became icy.

“You've always favored her.””

Dad stared at her.

“Because she's my daughter?””

“Because everything revolves around her! Her appointments, her savings, her problems. Tyler has been struggling for months.””

“And instead of helping him responsibly, you stole from a sick girl?””

Vanessa's face flushed.

“I am not going to stand here and be called a thief.””

Dad picked up the laptop.

“Then explain these transfers.””

She said nothing.

I noticed something on the desk.

A printed sheet of paper beneath the account folder.

It had been folded in half.

I pulled it out.

At the top was a vehicle purchase agreement.

The buyer's name was Tyler's.

But underneath the listed price was a handwritten note.

*Balance cleared upon delivery.*

I looked at the date.

The car had been purchased two days earlier.

“Dad?””

He took the paper.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then he looked at Tyler.

“Why does this say the vehicle was purchased for thirty-one thousand dollars?””

Tyler went pale.

Dad turned toward the car keys.

“You told us it cost forty thousand.””

“That's including everything.””

“There's no way taxes and registration account for nine thousand dollars.””

Vanessa reached for the paper.

Dad pulled it away.

“Don't.””

She stepped back.

I pointed at the handwritten note.

“What's the balance?””

Tyler rubbed his face.

“Derek was holding the car until I paid him.””

“Paid him what?””

He remained silent.

Dad walked toward the hallway.

“I'm calling the police.””

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

“No!””

Dad looked down at her hand.

She released him immediately.

“You cannot do that,” she said.

“Watch me.””

“Michael, please. Think about this family.””

“This family?””

His voice cracked.

“You took the money we saved to protect my daughter.””

Vanessa's eyes filled.

For the first time, she looked frightened.

“Derek said he would hurt Tyler if I didn't pay him.””

Dad stopped.

“What?””

“He knows where Tyler works. He knows where he lives. He said the debt would keep growing.””

Tyler shook his head.

“Mom, stop.””

Dad turned toward him.

“Is that true?””

Tyler nodded.

“Derek said he would make me disappear.””

I felt a chill crawl up my arms.

Dad slowly lowered the phone.

“Then why didn't you come to me?””

Tyler gave a bitter laugh.

“Because you would have told me to take responsibility.””

“I would have helped you find legal assistance. I would have helped you speak to the police.””

“You don't understand!””

Tyler slammed his hand against the desk.

“I was scared!””

Dad didn't move.

“You should have been scared enough not to steal from your sister.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Did you know about the gambling before you transferred the money?””

She hesitated.

Then nodded.

“How long?””

“Several months.””

I couldn't believe it.

Several months.

While I was attending appointments, while Dad was working overtime, while I was putting coins into a savings jar, Vanessa had known that Tyler was gambling.

She had watched us save.

She had known exactly what the money was for.

And she had still taken it.

Dad picked up his phone again.

This time, Vanessa didn't stop him.

But before he could dial, Tyler said something that made my heart drop.

“Dad, there's another reason Mom transferred the money.””

Dad looked up.

Tyler's eyes moved toward Vanessa.

“She didn't just pay Derek.””

“What else did she do?””

Tyler swallowed.

“She used the account information to sign something.””

Dad stared at her.

“What did you sign, Vanessa?””

She didn't answer.

Then Tyler reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a folded document.

He placed it on the desk.

At the top were my father's name, my name, and the words:

*Authorization for Withdrawal and Transfer of Medical Savings.*

My signature appeared at the bottom.

Except I had never signed it.
