Chapter 4: The Million-Dollar Secret
For several seconds, I couldn't hear anything except the blood rushing in my ears.
One million dollars.
Tyler's name beside the words Primary Beneficiary.
And a message mentioning a policy loan.
I looked at my father.
“Dad, what loan?””
He reached for Vanessa's phone, but she pulled it against her chest.
“Give me that,” he said.
“No.””
“Vanessa, give me the phone.””
“You're not going to intimidate me.””
Dad stared at her.
“You've already stolen forty thousand dollars. Don't make this worse.””
Vanessa laughed nervously.
“Worse? You want to know what's worse? Spending years watching you sacrifice everything for a daughter who barely appreciates it while my own son struggles to survive.””
Tyler stepped toward her.
“Mom, stop talking.””
She turned on him.
“You wanted the car! You wanted the money! Now you're pretending you had nothing to do with it?””
Tyler's face reddened.
“You told me Derek had everything under control!””
Dad looked between them.
“Someone explain the policy loan.””
I took the photograph from Vanessa's phone when she finally lowered it.
The document was an insurance statement.
My name appeared at the top, followed by a policy number and a death benefit of one million dollars.
But beneath the beneficiary section, another figure caught my attention.
*Outstanding policy loan: $18,500.*
I looked at Dad.
“Did you borrow money against my insurance policy?””
He shook his head immediately.
“No. I never took out a loan against that policy.””
Vanessa's mouth tightened.
“Michael, don't pretend you don't know.””
“I signed the original paperwork. I never authorized a loan.””
Tyler suddenly sat down.
“Mom, you said the loan was yours.””
Dad turned toward him.
“What loan?””
Tyler rubbed both hands over his face.
“The eighteen thousand five hundred.””
My stomach tightened.
“Where did that money go?””
Tyler looked at Vanessa.
She didn't answer.
“Mom?””
She finally spoke.
“It was used to settle part of Tyler's debt.””
Dad stepped backward.
“You borrowed against the policy to pay Derek?””
“I was going to replace it!””
“With what?””
“My money!””
“You don't have eighteen thousand dollars!””
Vanessa's voice rose.
“I had a plan!””
Dad slammed his palm against the desk.
“Your plan involved stealing from my daughter twice?””
I felt dizzy.
The forty thousand dollars wasn't the only money missing.
Someone had apparently taken another eighteen thousand five hundred dollars using an insurance policy connected to me.
I sat down.
“Dad, whose policy is this?””
He pulled out a chair beside me.
“It's a policy I arranged when you turned eighteen. It was intended to help cover future medical and financial expenses. I pay the premiums. You were supposed to be protected.””
“Then why is Tyler the beneficiary?””
Dad frowned.
“He isn't supposed to be.””
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
“The original paperwork allowed changes to the beneficiary.””
Dad stared at her.
“Only with the policyholder's authorization.””
“Exactly.””
He looked at me.
“You never signed a beneficiary change, did you?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Dad took out his phone and called the insurance company.
Vanessa started pacing.
“Michael, this is ridiculous. You're going to ruin everything over a misunderstanding.””
He ignored her.
After several minutes, he finally reached a representative.
He provided the policy number and answered a series of security questions.
Then his expression changed.
“What do you mean the change was submitted online?””
He listened.
“Who submitted it?””
Another pause.
“Under whose authorization?””
He looked at Vanessa.
I watched his fingers tighten around the phone.
Finally, he said, “Send me the records immediately.””
He ended the call.
“What happened?”” I asked.
Dad looked at me.
“The beneficiary was changed eleven months ago.””
My heart dropped.
“Who changed it?””
He didn't answer immediately.
Then he looked directly at Vanessa.
“The request came from an account registered to her email address.””
Vanessa's face went pale.
“That doesn't prove anything.””
Dad continued.
“The insurance company also confirmed that the policy loan was requested using a digital authorization.””
“Michael—”
“And the money was deposited into a bank account under your name.””
Tyler stood.
“Mom, you said the money went directly to Derek!””
Vanessa snapped.
“Be quiet!””
Dad stared at her.
“You changed the beneficiary on my daughter's policy, borrowed against it, and used the money to pay your son's gambling debt.””
“I was trying to save him!””
“You put her future at risk.””
Vanessa's eyes filled.
For once, I didn't feel sorry for her.
I felt frightened.
Because the woman standing in our office hadn't simply taken money from a savings account.
She had apparently spent almost a year arranging something behind our backs.
And she had done it while smiling at family dinners, asking about my appointments, and telling me to stay positive.
Dad helped me stand.
“Get your things,” he told Vanessa.
She stared at him.
“What?””
“I want you out of this house tonight.””
“You can't throw me out!””
“This is my house.””
She turned toward me.
“You're happy now, aren't you?””
I looked at her.
“No.””
My voice trembled.
“I wanted to see clearly. That's all I ever wanted.””
She looked away.
Dad called the insurance company again, this time requesting an immediate fraud investigation.
Then he contacted the bank to freeze any remaining transfers.
But before we could do anything else, Tyler's phone began ringing.
He looked at the screen.
Derek Collins.
He answered on speaker.
A man's voice came through, calm and amused.
“Hey, Tyler. Your mother hasn't sent the rest of the money.””
Dad stepped closer.
“What money?””
There was a brief silence.
Then Derek laughed.
“Wait. Who's that?””
“Michael. Tyler's father.””
Another pause.

Then Derek said something that made my blood run cold.
“Oh. You must be the man whose daughter is insured for a million dollars.””
