Chapter 3 - MY FATHER DID NOT TRUST ME COMPLETELY EITHER

The clause was humiliating.
Dad had written:
Upon Daniel’s death, incapacity, or removal for cause, Catherine Kincaid shall serve as temporary voting representative for no more than five years, subject to independent fiduciary supervision. Upon assumption, she must commission a review of all related-party transactions approved by Daniel during the preceding five years.
I stared.
“Removal for cause?”
Mara nodded.
“Your father anticipated possible board removal.”
Catherine looked at me.
“Why?”
I knew.
Three years before Dad died, I had approved a $22 million acquisition from a company partly owned by my college friend, Alex Trent.
Deal was not criminal.
But conflict disclosure had been weak.
Dad hated.
He believed I trusted people too easily.
He called me reckless.
I said he was old.
We fought.
Then another issue.
I used corporate aircraft frequently for personal trips and reimbursed partially.
Allowed under old policy but ugly.
Dad wanted independent governance.
He was not planning to disinherit me.
He was trying to prevent family control from becoming automatic.
Mother framed his will as attack on her.
Catherine framed as trust in her.
Both incomplete.
Dad trusted systems more than any of us.
That hurt my pride.
Then Daria’s motive.
If Catherine lived and I died/was removed, Daria had no pathway back to control.
If Catherine dead, and I had no children, emergency voting authority went to professional trustee—not Daria either.
So why fake death?
There was more.
Version three also revoked Daria Kincaid’s lifetime consulting agreement with Kincaid Industries.
Annual compensation:
$1.8 million.
Plus residence, staff, aircraft access, expense account.
There.
Money.
Status.
Version two kept agreement.
Version three ended at Dad’s death.
But Hale probated version two.
Daria continued receiving.
Over two years after Catherine disappearance and Dad death? Dad died 6 months before crash; will version issue at probate before crash. Actually Daria had already continued consulting through version two. Catherine challenge threatened to expose version three and force repayment/removal.
So Catherine’s crash happened during challenge.
Motive.
Daria stood to lose millions and authority.
Then family foundation.
She had directed grants to developers tied to Graham Pike’s brother.
Conflict.
Dad discovered.
Not necessarily theft.
But enough.
Then my own role.
Had I benefited from version two?
Yes.
Version three imposed independent review and capped my unilateral voting authority for certain acquisitions.
Version two gave me broader control.
I had enjoyed that for two years.
Without knowing version three.
Would I have resisted?
Maybe.
I had to admit.
Catherine asked:
“If you had known your dad wanted independent review, what would you have done?”
I looked at her.
“Five years ago?”
“Yes.”
“Fought.”
She nodded.
“That is why he didn’t trust you fully.”
Painful.
But true.
Then the board.
Mara turned evidence over to securities regulators because Kincaid publicly listed.
Trading disclosures based on wrong governance documents.
Company had to correct.
Stock dipped.
Media exploded.
DEAD WIFE ALIVE. KINCAID SUCCESSION DOCUMENTS QUESTIONED.
I wanted protect brand.
Then caught myself.
Truth first.
Board appointed independent committee.
I recused from investigation into historical transactions and wills.
Daria removed from all company premises pending review.
Graham suspended.
Victor Hale suspended as outside counsel.
No family handling.
Good.
Then Catherine’s identity.
Independent DNA.
Results:
She was Catherine Elise Kincaid.
Fingerprints matched old passport records.
Scars.
Medical history.
No doubt.
Penelope:
99.999% my biological child.
I sat with report.
Cried.
Catherine watched.
No romantic moment.
Then family court.
Because Catherine legally dead and our marriage? Death declaration based false record.
Court restored identity.
Marriage had never actually ended biologically/legal? Legally, death dissolves marriage; restoration may not automatically revive marital status. We had not remarried others. So less complicated. Attorneys petitioned to vacate death declaration; marital status would be separately determined. Catherine said:
“I am not interested in being automatically married because paperwork gets corrected.”
I agreed.
Good.
Then Penelope birth certificate amended after paternity adjudication.
My name added.
Not because I paid.
Because true.
Then custody.
Catherine had raised her exclusively.
I got gradual visitation.
No instant 50/50.
I had never changed diaper.
I learned.
First supervised afternoon.
Penelope stared at me.
Then cried when Catherine left room.
I panicked.
Catherine:
“She does that.”
Then:
“You’re not failing.”
Interesting.
I held.
Walked.
She eventually slept.
I cried more than baby.
Then Daria requested see Penelope.
Absolutely not initially.
Catherine said:
“She knew about pregnancy?”
Did she?
We didn't know yet.
Mara found message from Graham three months before Catherine gave birth:
Subject appears pregnant.
Daria replied:
Confirm paternity if possible. Do not approach.
She knew there would be child.
She did nothing.
Worse.
Then after birth, surveillance photographs.
Penelope newborn.
Daria had seen granddaughter through lens.
Never told me.
Catherine saw photos in evidence and vomited.
I nearly destroyed room.
Mara stopped:
“Do not make evidence into furniture.”
Right.
Then why Daria didn't take Penelope?
Because child being mine complicated inheritance even more.
Under father’s will, a living biological descendant of mine would receive a separate future voting trust at adulthood and further block Daria’s influence.
So she preferred both mother and child invisible.
Not kill.
Erase.
She funded surveillance to ensure they stayed away.
Then Catherine lost jobs because anonymous “identity fraud” reports.
Daria’s network kept destabilizing her.
That explained homelessness.
This was coercive.
No cages needed.
Then Daria’s attorney said she only wanted protect family from impostor.
But she knew DNA likely.
Messages.
Case strengthened.
Then Victor Hale’s role.
He had orchestrated false dental record substitution.
Why?
Fees.
Loyalty.
And Daria had promised him Kincaid general counsel role.
He later got.
Conflict.
Then Dr. Monroe deceased, confession.
He had accepted $60,000 “consulting payment” through Hale’s firm after identification.
He regretted.
Then Graham.
His surveillance.
Did he know Catherine alive from beginning?
Yes.
He saw her at rural hospital.
He followed Daria’s order to classify information “family threat.”
He had told me she died knowing otherwise.
That was betrayal.
May you like
He later testified in exchange for plea consideration.
That was when I finally learned how deep.
