Chapter 5 - CATHERINE DID NOT COME HOME

When her legal identity was restored, everyone assumed Catherine would return to Kincaid estate.

She refused.

“I was dead there.”

Fair.

She rented townhouse through restored funds.

Not from me as gift.

Her pre-disappearance bank accounts and investments were unfrozen after court.

Some assets had passed to me under death.

Independent accounting.

I placed disputed assets in escrow.

No “here’s a mansion.”

Then her estate.

When declared dead, I inherited around $9 million.

Some spent? I had invested most.

I returned traceable principal plus gains through settlement.

Some charitable bequests had already been made.

Catherine did not claw from charities.

Professional resolution.

Then life insurance.

A $5 million policy paid to me.

Insurer now faced fraud.

I had received in good faith.

Funds mostly untouched.

I returned per negotiated settlement, then insurer pursued conspirators.

Good.

Then marriage.

Court vacated death declaration.

Legal experts determined our marital status was not automatically emotionally restored. Depending state, marriage might be deemed continuous after fraudulent death record, but Catherine filed legal separation anyway while rights sorted.

She said:

“I need choice.”

I agreed.

We did not sleep together.

No sweeping reunion.

Penelope came first.

Then visitation.

I learned toddler life.

Bananas cut wrong.

Shoes missing.

Nap refusals.

She called me “Dan” because Catherine did.

Then one day:

“Daddy?”

It happened accidentally while I was buckling car seat.

I froze.

She repeated:

“Daddy.”

Catherine saw my face.

“Don’t make it a ceremony.”

Right.

I smiled.

“Yes?”

Then she asked for cracker.

Normal.

Good.

Then Catherine and I started talking.

Not romance.

History.

She was angry that I had let my mother control funeral, estate, security.

I was angry she stopped trying sooner.

She looked.

“You think I didn’t try enough?”

I regretted immediately.

She said:

“I was injured, pregnant, legally dead, broke, and being called delusional.”

“You’re right.”

Then:

“I’m sorry.”

Good.

Then she admitted too:

“I should have gone to media.”

“Maybe.”

“I was afraid they’d call me fraud.”

Likely.

Then:

“I hid too.”

Different responsibility.

She had been victim, but choices still.

Then her father’s will? Wait my father. She served emergency control only if trigger. Not triggered because I alive/not removed.

So she does not suddenly control Kincaid.

Version three restored.

Independent review of my transactions initiated because succession documents fraudulent? Board chose voluntarily.

I agreed.

Review found Alex Trent acquisition conflict.

Was it illegal?

No.

But overpriced by about $8 million and disclosure weak.

Board censured me, required governance changes.

I reimbursed some personal aircraft expenses.

No criminal.

I lost unilateral acquisition authority temporarily.

That humbled.

Mother’s claim “Dad feared you” had sliver.

Catherine said:

“Your father was right about one thing.”

“What?”

“You hate being checked.”

I laughed.

“Less now.”

Then she joined board?

No.

Version three gave only emergency authority. No emergency.

She declined current seat initially due conflict/trauma.

Later shareholder observer maybe.

No instant corporate queen.

Then Daria’s consulting compensation.

Independent accounting found she had received $3.6 million under wrong will version after Dad death.

Some work actually performed.

Settlement: repay $1.4m excess, relinquish perks, no governance role.

Plus criminal/civil consequences for fraud.

Then Hale.

Search found original will version three in archive.

He had concealed.

Emails with Daria.

He also manipulated dental records.

He was central legal architect.

He pleaded/convicted on obstruction, fraud, evidence tampering, conspiracy.

Disbarred.

Dr. Monroe deceased but confession.

Dr. Cross? Did we establish Cross? Yes private physician at clinic. Investigators found he had fabricated psychiatric history and coordinated transfer.

He lost license, criminal charges for false medical records/unlawful restraint-related conduct/obstruction depending law.

Facility sued/settled.

No murder charge if evidence lacking.

Then Daria.

She ultimately pleaded? Could go trial. For drama, partial plea.

She admitted conspiracy to falsify death-related records, obstruction, financial fraud involving will, identity interference, surveillance harassment. She denied ordering crash sabotage; prosecutors could not prove beyond reasonable doubt. Hale took responsibility for contractor arrangement while claiming intent only delay.

Daria received meaningful custodial/home confinement due age, restitution, permanent ban from Kincaid governance.

No life sentence.

Then Catherine’s victim statement:

“You did not kill me.”

Daria looked.

“You made my existence administratively inconvenient until people treated me like a mistake.”

Powerful.

Then:

“You took my name, my husband, my money, and my daughter’s first years with her father.”

Then:

“But you did not create my survival, and you do not get credit for not murdering me.”

Strong.

Then my statement:

“My mother told herself she was protecting me. I allowed family systems where one person could decide what I was permitted to know.”

Accountability.

Then Penelope not present.

May you like

Correct.

No child courtroom spectacle.
