Chapter 4 - GRAHAM PIKE TOLD ME WHY HE LIED TO MY FACE

Graham had once saved my life.
Seven years earlier, a disgruntled former contractor attacked me outside headquarters.
Graham tackled him.
Took knife cut.
I trusted him after that.
Maybe too much.
During proffer meeting, he looked older.
No suit.
No Kincaid pin.
He said:
“I thought I was protecting you.”
I almost laughed.
“Everyone says that.”
He closed eyes.
Then told.
After Catherine’s crash, Graham reached hospital first.
She was alive.
Conscious briefly.
Asked for me.
He called Daria.
Daria said:
“Do not call Daniel until doctors know what happened.”
At first reasonable.
Then Cross arrived.
He told Graham Catherine may have intentionally crashed due emotional crisis.
False.
Then Daria said Catherine had been conspiring with attorneys to seize company if I was declared incompetent.
Twisted version of will.
Graham believed she posed threat.
Then Cross transferred Catherine.
Graham guarded.
Two days later, Daria told him Catherine had died from complications.
Did he believe?
For twelve hours.
Then he saw her alive during transfer.
He confronted Daria.
She told:
“Daniel cannot handle this. If Catherine comes back now, company collapses and he loses everything.”
Graham chose loyalty to me as imagined.
He said nothing.
Then staged death certification process already underway.
He helped move Catherine’s car after authorities released scene? Need not detail. He assisted legal team by transporting personal items.
He knew identification false.
Then funeral.
He stood behind me.
Watched.
“I’m sorry.”
I stared.
“You let me bury my wife.”
“Yes.”
“Then spent two years helping me search.”
His face collapsed.
“Yes.”
Why?
Because I insisted.
He steered investigators away.
Every promising lead, he killed.
Not physically.
He labeled unreliable.
That explained failure.
Then when I hired outside investigator secretly, Graham discovered only late.
He began surveillance Catherine to control.
Three months ago found.
Did he tell Daria?
Yes.
Then why not abduct Catherine again?
Daria said not to.
Too risky.
Instead keep unstable, prevent contact.
Anonymous calls to employers.
Landlord complaints.
One bank account frozen due identity review.
That pushed Catherine into homelessness.
Graham had personally caused two.
He cried.
“I thought if she stayed away, no one got hurt.”
Catherine, Penelope did.
He knew.
Then Penelope.
He watched.
He said:
“That was when I knew we had gone too far.”
I snapped:
“Two years after fake funeral?”
“Yes.”
Honest.
Then he secretly left one door open.
What?
He leaked my hotel schedule to Samuel Reed, Catherine’s attorney.
The reason Catherine knew where I would be.
Graham, drowning in guilt, created opportunity.
So the man who helped erase her also helped reunite.
Complex.
Did that redeem?
No.
But truth.
Then Samuel Reed.
He had not vanished voluntarily.
Hale threatened malpractice suit and reported him to bar using fabricated conflict claims.
Samuel left state during investigation.
Eventually cleared.
He returned, connected Catherine to Mara through whistleblower channel.
He and my private investigator separately converged.
Then hotel.
Graham drove Daria because she discovered Catherine movement and followed.
She intended confrontation.
Why smile?
Control habit.
She thought she could still talk everyone back into roles.
Then current charges.
Graham faced obstruction, conspiracy, surveillance-related offenses, false statements.
He cooperated.
Lost career.
Possibly shorter custodial/probation.
No return to security.
Then I asked:
“Did my mother ever order Catherine killed?”
“No.”
Important.
Crash sabotage?
Who altered brakes?
Graham said he did not know.
Daria denied.
Evidence showed mechanic connected to Hale’s investigator, not direct Daria.
Could be deliberate intimidation that went wrong.
Let's unfold.
Hale hired private investigator Cole Mercer to follow Catherine night of attorney meeting.
Mercer admitted he paid mechanic to disable vehicle temporarily? That's dangerous operational detail. Better simply: forensic reexamination found brake line tampering, and payment records linked a contractor to Hale, but intent/cause remained subject to prosecution. We don't describe method.
Hale claimed he wanted vehicle “disabled” to stop Catherine leaving with documents, not crash. Still reckless/criminal.
Daria knew there would be “delay,” not exact method? Messages:
Daria: She cannot file tomorrow.
Hale: She won’t.
Ambiguous.
Prosecutors argued conspiracy to obstruct; attempted homicide harder.
No need overclaim.
Catherine said:
“I don’t need every bad thing to be murder.”
Good.
“What they did is already enough.”
Yes.
Then my mother.
She requested meeting.
Mara advised through counsel.
I went after charges filed.
Daria sat behind glass? Maybe pretrial detention? Could be home monitoring due age, nonviolent financial/obstruction charges. Let's set she was under house arrest pending trial due influence risk.
I visited family estate with monitor.
She looked smaller.
“Daniel.”
“What did you think would happen if Catherine walked into my office?”
She answered:
“You would believe her.”
“Would I?”
“Yes.”
That was compliment and accusation.
Then:
“You would turn against me.”
“Because you lied.”
“Yes.”
Then she said:
“I spent forty years building Kincaid beside your father and he wrote me out with one signature.”
There.
She believed company partly hers.
Dad never gave equal legal authority.
Resentment.
She had worked.
Hosted.
Networked.
Raised me.
Then Dad removed $1.8m consultancy and trust role.
Humiliation.
Catherine became symbol.
Then Daria said:
“He trusted your wife more than me.”
“No.”
“He trusted independent controls more than you.”
Mother stared.
That hurt.
Then:
“Did you know Catherine was pregnant?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know child was mine?”
“I believed.”
“Why not tell me?”
“Because then you would search harder.”
There.
Then:
“You watched me grieve.”
“Yes.”
“Did you ever feel sorry?”
“Every day.”
“Then why continue?”
“Because stopping meant admitting everything.”
Secrets compound.
Then:
“Did you love Penelope?”
She started crying.
“I loved the idea of her.”
I stood.
“That is not love.”
Maybe harsh but fair.
Then:
“I saw photographs.”
“A surveillance file is not grandmotherhood.”
Silence.
Then she said:
“If Catherine had come back, she would have controlled the company.”
“Temporarily.”
“She would have investigated you.”
“She should have.”
Mother stared.
Growth.
Then I said:
“You weren't protecting me from Catherine. You were protecting us from scrutiny.”
There.
She closed eyes.
May you like
“Yes.”
Finally.
