Chapter 3 - EVELYN HAD SIGNED FOR THE CORRECTION LETTER

Luca confronted Evelyn with lawyers present.

I did not attend.

Later, through discovery and statements, I learned.

Evelyn initially denied opening the correction letter.

She said:

“It was addressed to Luca. I signed because I handled mail.”

Then:

“Did you give it to him?”

“I don’t remember.”

That answer collapsed when investigators recovered an email.

Evelyn to Dr. Adrian Cole:

The correction seems unnecessary now that Luca and Nia are divorcing. Does he need to be notified?

Dr. Cole replied:

Yes. He was part of treatment and should receive corrected medical information relevant to counseling. Nia must also be notified separately.

Then Evelyn:

Nia has moved. We do not have address.

The clinic did have attorney forwarding information, but their system failed to update properly.

Then:

Cole: We’ll send certified notice.

Did they?

One to old penthouse.

Signed Evelyn.

One to my previous apartment? Returned.

Then no follow-up.

Institutional failure.

Evelyn exploited.

Then why hide from Luca?

At that point she and Luca had begun relationship.

Not married.

But intimate.

She feared if Luca learned our diagnosis was wrong, he might reconsider divorce.

Maybe call me.

Maybe discover pregnancy? She did not know pregnancy yet.

Then another email.

Evelyn to her sister:

If Luca learns Nia’s issue was not as bad as they said, he’ll romanticize everything again. I cannot go backward.

There.

Personal motive.

Then later she saw a photograph.

Me pregnant.

Not public? A mutual friend posted baby shower photo six months later.

Evelyn saw.

This was crucial.

She knew I was pregnant.

Did she know Luca father?

She suspected.

Message to sister:

Nia is pregnant. Timing is ugly.

Then:

Do not tell Luca. If it’s his, she’ll use it to pull him back.

There.

She chose.

Did she know twins after birth?

Yes.

A private investigator? Better not. She saw social media through mutual friend.

Photo of twins.

Then their ages.

She suspected strongly.

Still silent.

Did she ever tell clinic? No.

Did she destroy medical records? No.

She withheld correction letter she had received and lied by omission.

Serious morally, maybe not criminal unless mail/medical privacy issues. She had authorized mail handling perhaps. Could be civil/privacy.

Then marriage.

Luca married Evelyn two years after divorce.

She became Mrs. Moretti.

No children.

Did she have fertility issues? Not relevant.

They simply did not have children, maybe by choice? Opening says no children, Luca later saw specialists. Could say after years of unsuccessful attempts. Fine.

Then he got tested.

Normal.

That reopened old questions.

Why had prior clinic assumed problem Nia?

Because old record.

Then he went to Dr. Walsh.

Audit.

Message.

Restaurant.

Everything.

Then Luca asked Evelyn:

“Did you know Nia had twins?”

She said:

“Yes.”

His lawyer later recorded.

Then:

“Did you think they were mine?”

“I thought it was possible.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

She cried.

“Because I thought she would call if they were yours.”

There.

Convenient.

Then:

“You had seen correction.”

“Yes.”

“You knew she might be fertile.”

“Yes.”

“You knew timing.”

“Yes.”

Then:

“And you said nothing.”

“Yes.”

Luca filed separation that week.

Not because Evelyn alone caused four missing years.

Important.

I did too.

But their marriage was built partly on information she withheld.

That mattered.

Then she turned blame to me publicly? Perhaps she threatened.

Better she initially issued statement through PR:

Private family matter.

No war.

Then legal discovery unearthed something else.

She had contacted my old obstetric office once after seeing pregnancy photo.

Pretended to be assistant from Moretti family office requesting “confirmation for insurance.”

Office refused.

She tried.

That made intent clearer.

Not innocent.

Then Luca realized:

She did not merely fail to tell.

May you like

She tried to verify and hide.

Their marriage ended.
