Chapter 4 - LUCA MET HIS CHILDREN AS “MR. LUCA”

The first supervised meeting happened three weeks after DNA confirmation.
A child therapist named Dr. Maya Chen helped.
She was blunt.
Good.
“No one tells them they owe affection.”
Luca nodded.
“No gifts bigger than age-appropriate.”
He had brought two enormous boxes.
She stared.
He sent them back to car.
I almost laughed.
Then Theo and Eliana entered therapy room.
Theo held my hand.
Eliana carried stuffed horse.
Luca sat.
Not on a throne.
Not in suit? He was in sweater, jeans.
Trying.
Theo said:
“You own the hotel?”
Luca blinked.
“Some hotels.”
“Mom says owning hotel doesn’t mean you can eat free.”
I nearly died.
Luca laughed.
“She’s right.”
Then Eliana asked:
“Are you our dad?”
Direct.
Dr. Chen had prepared them.
I had told truth that week.
“This man is your biological father. He did not know you existed. I should have told him.”
I did not say he abandoned.
Then Luca answered:
“Yes.”
Eliana looked at me.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell?”
“We’ll talk more when you’re older. I was hurt and made a decision I thought protected you. It also kept him from you.”
Age-appropriate accountability.
Then Theo asked Luca:
“Why didn’t you know?”
Luca’s face changed.
“Because your mom and I stopped talking, and adults made mistakes.”
He did not blame me alone.
Good.
Then:
“Did you not want us?”
Luca leaned forward.
“I didn’t know you existed.”
Theo thought.
Then:
“If you knew?”
Luca’s eyes filled.
“I would have wanted to know you.”
Not promise perfect.
Not “I would have moved mountains.”
Simple.
Then Eliana handed him horse.
“Her name is Pepper.”
Luca took.
Meeting lasted forty-five minutes.
No hug required.
At end Theo said:
“Can he come again?”
Luca almost cried.
I looked at Dr. Chen.
She smiled.
Yes.
Then weekly.
Then outings.
Park.
Museum.
Pizza.
Luca tried too hard at first.
Every outing curated.
VIP access.
Private rooms.
Theo asked:
“Can we just go bowling?”
That changed him.
They went.
Luca lost.
Theo loved.
Then Eliana got fever one night.
I called Luca.
Not because required.
Because he was father now.
He came.
Sat on sofa.
Did nothing dramatic.
Held ice water.
When Eliana woke she saw him and smiled weakly.
“Mr. Luca.”
Then after six months:
“Dad Luca.”
Later just Dad sometimes.
No forced.
Theo slower.
Called him Luca for almost year.
Luca accepted.
That was important.
