Chapter 8 - LUCA LEARNED THAT BEING THEIR FATHER DID NOT MEAN BUYING BACK TIME

Luca tried.

Too hard.

Private school donation.

Horse for Eliana.

Theo gaming setup.

I stopped some.

Dr. Chen stopped more.

She told him:

“You are trying to convert guilt into logistics.”

That hit.

Then Luca asked:

“What do I do instead?”

“Show up when boring.”

So he did.

Dentist.

Parent-teacher conference.

Soccer practice in rain.

Eliana’s horse drawings.

Theo’s science fair.

No cameras.

No magazines.

Then one night Theo got suspended for pushing boy who called me liar.

Luca wanted lawyer.

I said no.

School discipline appropriate.

He laughed at himself.

Then sat with Theo.

“Your mom made a serious mistake.”

Theo stared.

“You’re defending her?”

“I’m being accurate.”

Then:

“And I made mistakes before you were born.”

“What?”

“I blamed her for fertility problems and left marriage partly because I was afraid I would never have children.”

Theo absorbed.

Then:

“So you both messed up.”

“Yes.”

“Cool.”

Not cool.

But kids simplify.

Then Eliana at nine asked:

“Why didn’t you come find us?”

“I didn’t know.”

“Why didn’t Mom tell?”

“She was hurt and scared.”

“Why did Evelyn not tell?”

“She was scared too, but she made selfish choices.”

Then:

“Everybody scared.”

Pretty much.

Then Eliana said:

“That’s annoying.”

Correct.

Then Luca laughed.

Parenthood had humbled him.

At Moretti board, people feared him.

At home, twins told him his pasta was bad.

Healthy.

Then he and I?

No immediate romance.

We co-parented.

Sometimes old chemistry.

Sometimes anger.

We attended therapy not to reunite, but cooperate.

At first I resented his success.

He resented lost years.

Then grief softened.

After three years, we became friendly.

Not married.

Not yet.

Then he dated someone briefly.

I was surprised jealousy.

Did not act.

He ended relationship unrelated.

Then one winter night after twins school concert, he asked:

“Do you ever think about us?”

I said:

“Yes.”

He waited.

“That is not invitation.”

He smiled.

May you like

“I know.”

Growth.
