Chapter 4 - LILY WAS THE FIRST PERSON WHO BELIEVED HER

Lily refused to leave Amelia’s side that first night.

Child services and therapist advised keep environment calm.

No interrogation.

No adult details.

Victor told:

“Amelia is your mother.”

Lily already knew.

Then:

“Vanessa lied about some things.”

Lily:

“A lot.”

Seven-year-old.

Then she asked:

“Is Vanessa going to jail?”

Victor:

“I don’t know.”

Good.

“Is Noah safe?”

“Yes.”

“Is Amelia staying?”

Victor looked at Amelia.

She answered:

“I’ll be nearby.”

Not move into mansion.

Correct.

She rented secure apartment arranged by attorney.

She would not sleep under same roof as Vanessa’s belongings and Victor’s confusion.

Then Lily asked:

“Can I come?”

Custody/legal status.

Victor said they would work with judge/therapist.

No child promise.

Amelia kissed forehead.

“I’m not disappearing again.”

That promise she could make.

Then Lily said:

“You did disappear.”

Amelia cried.

“I know.”

Important.

From child’s perspective.

Then Amelia explained age-appropriate:

“I got hurt and adults made it hard for me to come home.”

Not villain dump.

Then Lily asked Victor:

“Why didn’t you find her?”

He froze.

“I thought she died.”

“Why?”

“Because adults showed me papers.”

Lily:

“Papers can lie?”

Victor looked toward Vanessa.

“Yes.”

That became painful lesson.

Then actual investigation.

Marta Ruiz testified Cross instructed staff:

Patient insists she is Amelia Costello but Amelia deceased.

Classic circular trap.

Any insistence became delusion.

Then Amelia obtained DNA test two years after disappearance through private lab showing match to old stored sample? She tried legal restoration.

Simon Hale contested, claimed chain-of-custody invalid.

Dragged.

She lacked money because her accounts frozen through death.

Legal aid stretched.

Then a judge eventually granted provisional identity under Elena Maren.

Not full Amelia restoration because estate complex.

That allowed life.

Then she learned Victor married Vanessa.

Stopped litigation for a year due depression.

Not ideal.

Then restarted after Lily sighting.

She had agency and delays.

No perfect victim.

Then why become maid instead of court again?

Because Simon Hale had started destroying archived records after Victor’s father died.

Amelia’s attorney suspected.

She wanted direct evidence.

This was risky and legally dubious.

Her attorney did not approve infiltration.

She did it alone.

Victor:

“You put yourself inside house under false name.”

“Yes.”

“You were around Lily without telling me.”

“Yes.”

“That was wrong.”

Amelia looked.

“I know.”

Good.

No free pass.

Then:

“I was afraid if I approached as Amelia, Vanessa would block me again.”

“She probably would.”

“That does not make my choice perfect.”

Nuance.

Then Lily overheard enough to ask:

“Are you in trouble too?”

Amelia smiled sadly.

“For lying about my name at work, maybe.”

No criminal major, but employment deception.

Security review.

Victor did not magically excuse.

However identity documentation was lawful under Elena Maren, so she did not forge.

She concealed relationship.

Company/household policy breach.

She resigned maid role immediately.

Good.

Then Clara? no.

Then evidence from nursery.

Vanessa's intent.

Recovered messages with Cross:

V: I think Elena is Amelia.

Cross: Impossible.

V: Lily knows.

Cross: Remove her before Victor hears.

Then:

V: How?

Cross: Create a credibility event.

That phrase.

Then Vanessa:

No harm to Noah.

Cross:

Obviously. Make maid look negligent.

So plan.

Vanessa placed unsafe toy.

Expected Amelia intervene.

Then accuse.

No intent to kill Noah.

Still child endangerment and false accusation.

Then Cross’s moral line? He said no harm but orchestrated danger.

Then Simon:

Do not involve me in domestic nonsense. Get her dismissed.

He knew Amelia threat but not specific incident.

Then after camera exposure, conspiracy unravelled.

Cross fled motel? He was arrested on obstruction/medical fraud after attempt destroy records.

Simon surrendered with lawyer.

Vanessa remained under house arrest? Depending charges. She was removed from mansion, no unsupervised access to children pending case.

No instant prison.

Then Victor filed protective orders.

No contact with Amelia/Lily.

Noah contact supervised? Vanessa was his mother. Court balanced.

She loved Noah and had endangered him during scheme.

Temporary supervised visitation after evaluation.

Victor did not use Noah as punishment.

Good.

Then Lily said:

“I don’t want Vanessa to see me.”

Respected.

Then Amelia:

“Do not make Lily choose sides in front of Noah.”

Victor nodded.

Noah was infant, but future.

Family.

Then Victor finally asked Amelia privately:

“Do you still love me?”

She stared.

“You ordered guards to remove me before checking camera.”

He closed eyes.

“That’s not answer.”

“It is part of it.”

Then:

“I loved the man I knew six years ago.”

“And now?”

“I don’t know you.”

May you like

That was fair.

No instant romance.
