Chapter 7 - LILY ASKED VANESSA WHY SHE LIED

Lily was eleven when she requested mediated meeting.

Four years after nursery incident.

Vanessa had completed custodial portion and lived under supervision/restrictions.

No surprise contact.

Lily decided.

Victor nervous.

Amelia too.

Therapist led.

Vanessa entered.

Lily did not hug.

“Hi.”

“Hi, Lily.”

Then:

“Did you know Mom was alive when you told me she was dead?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“Because I was afraid if you knew, you would ask Victor to find her.”

“Dad.”

Vanessa corrected.

“Your dad.”

Then:

“And I was afraid he would.”

Lily:

“Because you’d lose him?”

“Yes.”

“Did you love me?”

“Yes.”

“Then why keep my mom away?”

Vanessa cried.

“Because I wanted our family to stay the way it was, and I told myself changing it would hurt you.”

Lily stared.

“It did hurt me.”

“Yes.”

Then:

“Did you put toy with Noah because you wanted Mom fired?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know he could get hurt?”

“Yes.”

“Did you care?”

Vanessa broke.

“I cared, but I convinced myself Amelia would reach him before anything happened.”

Lily:

“That’s not safe.”

“No.”

Then:

“Did you want Noah dead for money?”

“No.”

Good.

Trust scheme was fees/control, not death.

Then:

“Did you marry Dad for money?”

Vanessa:

“Your grandfather—Simon—wanted me close to Victor because of what I knew. Money and protection were part at beginning.”

Then:

“But I also fell in love.”

Lily frowned.

“So both.”

“Yes.”

Children can hold.

Then:

“Are you sorry?”

“Yes.”

“Do you want me to call you Mom?”

Vanessa shook head.

“No.”

Lily had once called Vanessa Mom for years perhaps.

That complicated.

Vanessa said:

“If you remember doing that, it doesn’t mean you betrayed Amelia.”

Amelia later appreciated.

Then Lily:

“I don’t hate you.”

Vanessa cried.

Then:

“But I don’t trust you.”

“I understand.”

No hug.

Then after, Lily asked Amelia:

“Are you mad I used to call her Mom?”

Amelia’s face broke.

“No.”

“Really?”

“I am sad I missed years. I am not mad at you for surviving them.”

Good.

Then Victor apologized to Lily.

Why?

Because he had believed Vanessa’s versions.

He had not searched beyond official records.

Could he have?

At first no.

But after a few oddities maybe.

He had received anonymous letter from Amelia once.

Vanessa intercepted? Did he see any?

One letter got through, but Simon's firm told him scam.

Victor threw away.

He remembered.

That hurt.

He said:

“I should have investigated.”

Lily:

“You didn’t know.”

“Yes, but I had clue.”

Then Amelia:

“Do not turn yourself into criminal.”

Differentiated responsibility.

Then Victor changed.

No person—spouse, guard, doctor, attorney—became sole interpreter.

Independent channels.

Direct access logs.

Trust.

Health.

Children.

May you like

Boring.

Good.
