Chapter 11 - ROSE THOUGHT SHE HAD FAILED AN AUDITIONThree weeks after the wedding, Rose asked me:

“Did Vanessa not marry you because I was bad at being her daughter?”

I had to look away for one second before answering.

“No.”

“Why did she stop liking me?”

I could not tell a four-year-old about royalty trusts.

Boarding proposals.

Corporate acquisitions.

Manipulation.

So I gave her the truth she could carry.

“Vanessa wanted our family to work in a way that wasn’t safe for you.”

Rose frowned.

“Because I cried?”

“No.”

“Because I woke you?”

“No.”

“Because I called her Mommy?”

“No.”

Then:

“Nothing you did made it okay for her to hurt you.”

She thought.

Then:

“Can I still call Mommy Hannah Mommy?”

My throat closed.

“Always.”

“And Vanessa?”

“You can call her Vanessa.”

Rose nodded.

Then:

“Good.”

May you like

Small relief.

Sometimes children want language before explanations.
