Chapter 6 - THE FAMILIAR VOICE ON ROSE’S RECORDINGRose’s recording had started accidentally.

Her phone was really an old device I gave her for music, photos, and emergency calls over Wi-Fi.

That morning, she had been recording herself rehearsing:

“Mommy, I brought you flowers.”

She forgot to stop it.

The phone stayed inside the small pocket of her flower-girl dress.

So it captured what happened before she entered the hallway.

Vanessa and Evan were talking inside the side salon.

Vanessa:

“She was in my room again last night.”

Evan:

“Rose?”

“Who else?”

Then:

“She wakes Daniel whenever she has nightmares. He’ll never agree to boarding if she keeps clinging to him.”

Evan answered:

“Stop calling it boarding. The proposal is a developmental residency program.”

Even listening later, I nearly laughed from disgust.

Language laundering cruelty.

Then Vanessa:

“She’s four.”

Evan:

“Not now. At six or seven. We just need Daniel comfortable with the idea that Rose functions better with structure.”

My hands shook.

They had been planning years ahead.

Vanessa said:

“After the wedding, Rose becomes a problem.”

Evan:

“Only if you make her one. Get through today. Daniel signs the consolidation documents, you become his spouse, and we handle the rest later.”

Then the line I first heard:

“Keep her quiet until Daniel signs.”

Rose’s voice came faintly afterward.

She was walking toward them.

“Mommy?”

Silence.

Vanessa whispered:

“Not now.”

Then footsteps.

The recording cut.

Minutes later Vanessa shoved her.

No audio of the shove itself.

But hallway camera footage eventually showed enough.

Rose entering.

Vanessa following her out.

Bouquet falling.

Vanessa grabbing Rose.

Rose hitting the carpeted floor near a console table.

May you like

Her forehead striking its lower edge.

No ambiguity.
