Chapter 2: The Missing Twenty-Seven Minutes

The security manager asked me to come downstairs alone.

I left Lily with my mother in the bridal suite, where three bridesmaids were pretending not to hear her crying behind a closed bathroom door.

Before I left, I held her face between my hands.

"Whatever happens today, you are not responsible for your father's choices.""

"But Ethan's family—"

"Can wait.""

"What about the ceremony?""

I brushed a strand of hair away from her cheek.

"We'll decide what happens next when we know the truth.""

Lily searched my face.

"Are you going to leave him?""

It was the first time she had asked me that question.

I wanted to tell her I already knew the answer.

Instead, I kissed her forehead.

"I'm going to find out what he did.""

The hotel's security office was tucked behind the service elevators, far from the polished marble lobby. A young man in a gray uniform stood when I entered.

His name tag read BEN CARTER.

"Mrs. Hayes," he said.

"Thank you for coming.""

He locked the door behind me.

That small gesture frightened me more than it should have.

"Please tell me exactly what happened," I said.

Ben pulled up a chair and turned his monitor toward me.

"At 2:31 p.m., your husband entered the corridor outside Room 614. At 2:34, a woman entered the room. At 2:51, Mr. Hayes returned with another man.""

"Who was the woman?""

"We believe it was Ms. Vanessa Reed.""

"And the man?""

Ben opened a second recording.

A tall man in a charcoal suit walked beside Daniel. He carried a leather briefcase and glanced repeatedly toward the ceiling cameras.

I knew him.

"Richard Cole," I whispered.

Daniel's attorney.

Richard had represented our family for nearly a decade. He had drawn up our wills, reviewed the purchase of our house, and advised us when Daniel sold his first company.

He had attended Lily's graduation dinner.

He had sent us a Christmas card every year.

And now he was apparently helping my husband erase evidence.

"Can you play the recording?"" I asked.

Ben clicked the screen.

The footage showed Daniel entering the room alone. Seventeen minutes later, Vanessa appeared. She glanced down the corridor before slipping inside.

Twenty-seven minutes after that, Daniel emerged with Richard.

The camera had no audio, but the images were clear enough.

Richard handed Daniel a folder.

Daniel opened it, removed several pages, and tore them in half.

Then he looked directly at the camera.

Ben paused the recording.

"That's where the request to delete the footage came in," he said.

"Mr. Hayes claimed the recording contained confidential information about a guest. Mr. Cole said he had legal authority to request its removal.""

"Did they have that authority?""

"No.""

"Then why are we looking at it instead of the police?""

Ben swallowed.

"Because the general manager instructed us not to release anything without authorization from the hotel's legal department. But I made a backup before the request reached our system.""

I stared at him.

"Why?""

He looked uncomfortable.

"Because Mr. Cole threatened to have me fired when I refused to erase it immediately.""

Ben opened a drawer and removed a small flash drive.

"I don't know what your husband is involved in, Mrs. Hayes. But I didn't think someone should be able to destroy evidence just because he could afford to intimidate people.""

I accepted the drive.

"Thank you.""

He nodded, then hesitated.

"There's another detail.""

"What?""

"Room 614 was booked under a different name. The reservation was made three months ago, and the bill was paid using a corporate account belonging to Hayes Development.""

My husband's company.

"Was the room occupied before today?""

"Several times.""

"By Daniel and Vanessa?""

"I can't confirm that from the reservation records alone.""

I slipped the drive into my purse.

"Then I need the records.""

Ben shook his head.

"I can't give you the guest register without authorization.""

I understood.

He had already risked his job.

"Don't worry. You've done enough.""

As I reached for the door, he spoke again.

"Mrs. Hayes?""

I turned.

"Whatever is on that drive, you should know that your husband has been asking questions about the hotel's backup system since last week.""

I felt the room tilt.

He hadn't decided to delete the footage after Lily caught him.

He had anticipated the possibility of being caught.

And he had prepared for it.

I returned to the ballroom corridor at 3:07 p.m.

The ceremony was scheduled for 3:15.

Guests were taking their seats. A coordinator hurried past carrying a basket of rose petals. From behind the ballroom doors came the bright, cheerful notes of the pianist rehearsing the processional.

Daniel stood beside the entrance, laughing with Ethan's father.

He looked like the perfect father of the bride.

When he saw me, he excused himself.

"Where have you been?""

"Getting some air.""

His gaze moved to my purse.

"Your phone's been busy.""

I stared at him.

"Have you been checking my phone?""

"Don't be absurd.""

"Then how would you know?""

He took my elbow and guided me toward a quieter corner.

"Listen to me carefully. Lily is upset. You're upset.

I understand that. But we have two hundred people waiting, and I won't allow a private misunderstanding to ruin this day.""

"Did you ask the hotel to delete the camera footage outside Room 614?""

His hand tightened around my arm.

For one second, his face became completely blank.

Then he laughed.

"What on earth are you talking about?""

"Your attorney was there, too.""

The laughter disappeared.

"Who told you that?""

I pulled my arm free.

"So it happened.""

He glanced toward the ballroom entrance, where a group of guests had begun gathering.

"Lower your voice.""

"Did you have an affair with Vanessa?""

"Margaret—"

"Yes or no?""

He leaned closer.

"You have no idea what you're walking into.""

"Then explain it to me.""

"I can't.""

"Can't, or won't?""

He looked at me with an expression I had never seen before.

"Do you remember the business loan we took out four years ago?""

The question was so unexpected that I almost laughed.

"Of course I remember.""

We had borrowed against an investment property to help Hayes Development survive a disastrous commercial project. Daniel had assured me that the loan had been repaid.

"Why?""

"Because the bank is reviewing the company's accounts," he said.

"There are matters that could affect all of us.""

"All of us?""

He nodded toward the ballroom.

"Your daughter is getting married. Do you really want to create a scandal when our family is already under financial scrutiny?""

I stared at him.

"You told me the company was doing well.""

"It is.""

"You told me the loan was paid.""

"It was restructured.""

"You told me—"

"Enough, Margaret!""

A passing waiter stopped.

Daniel smiled at him.

"Sorry. Family nerves.""

The waiter continued on his way.

Daniel waited until we were alone again.

"Please," he said, suddenly softer.

"Let Lily have her wedding. We can talk about this tonight.""

I searched his face for the man I had married.

I found only a stranger who knew exactly which words would make me hesitate.

"What's in Room 614?"" I asked.

He went pale.

It lasted only a moment, but I saw it.

Then he straightened his tie.

"Nothing you need to worry about.""

He walked away before I could answer.

My phone vibrated again.

The same unknown number.

**Did Ben show you the footage? Good. Now check your daughter's trust account.

The transfer was approved at 2:46 p.m. today.**

I opened my banking app.

Lily's trust account had been established by my father when she was born. After his death, it held nearly eight hundred thousand dollars in investments and cash. Daniel had always insisted that it remain separate from our household finances.

I had never questioned him.

The account didn't appear in my personal banking app, so I called the private banking number saved in my contacts.

A representative named Claire answered.

"Good afternoon. How may I help you?""

"I need information about a trust account established for my daughter, Lily Hayes. Her grandfather was Thomas Bennett.""

"Of course, Mrs. Hayes. For security purposes, I'll need to verify your identity.""

I answered her questions.

There was a pause as she checked the records.

Then Claire said, "I'm sorry, Mrs. Hayes. I can see the trust, but I cannot disclose transaction details without additional verification.""

"Is there a transfer pending?""

Another pause.

"Yes.""

My throat tightened.

"How much?""

"I can only confirm the amount to an authorized trustee.""

"Who authorized it?""

"Mr. Daniel Hayes.""

The ballroom doors opened.

A coordinator stepped into the hallway.

"Mrs. Hayes? We're ready for the family procession.""

I barely heard her.

"Claire, when was the transfer requested?""

"At 2:46 p.m. today.""

The stranger's message had been accurate.

"How much is being transferred?""

"I apologize, but—"

"Please. My daughter is about to get married. I believe someone is stealing her inheritance.""

The representative fell silent.

Then she asked, "Mrs. Hayes, are you currently with Mr. Hayes?""

"No.""

"Please remain somewhere secure while I connect you to our fraud team. I cannot confirm any other details at this stage.""

My stomach dropped.

I looked toward the ballroom.

Daniel was standing beside Lily's empty place at the entrance, checking his watch.

The ceremony was about to begin.

And my husband had just attempted to move my daughter's inheritance while the entire family gathered to celebrate her future.

I turned away from the ballroom and answered the fraud team's call.

A man introduced himself as Michael Grant, the bank's senior investigator.

"Mrs. Hayes," he said, "I need you to listen carefully. The transfer has not been completed, but it is scheduled to execute automatically unless the authorization is challenged.""

"How much?""

"Seven hundred and eighty thousand dollars.""

I grabbed the edge of a nearby table.

"Where is it going?""

"An account belonging to a company called Vantage Meridian Holdings.""

I had never heard of it.

"Who owns that company?""

"We're still verifying the beneficial ownership.""

"Can you stop the transfer?""

"We can place a temporary hold, but I need to tell you something else.""

His voice grew more serious.

"The authorization was submitted using documentation that appears to contain your electronic signature.""

I stopped breathing.

"I never signed anything.""

"Then we may be dealing with suspected forgery.""

Across the hallway, Daniel looked up.

Our eyes met.

He saw the phone against my ear.

He saw the expression on my face.

And he started walking toward me.

Michael's voice came through the speaker.

"Mrs. Hayes, do not confront anyone until we've secured the account.""

But Daniel was already standing in front of me.

"Who are you talking to?""

I looked at the man I had trusted with my daughter's future.

"The bank.""

May you like

His face drained of color.

Then he reached for my phone.
