Chapter 6: The Woman Who Had Been Watching Us

I should have hung up on Richard Cole.

I should have called Detective Mitchell and told her everything he had said.

Instead, I asked the question that had been burning inside me since the beginning.

"What did my father know?""

Richard was silent for several seconds.

"Meet me in Room 614," he said.

"Come alone, and I'll show you.""

"No.""

"Margaret, if you want the truth about Thomas, you'll have to stop assuming everyone who kept a secret was protecting Daniel.""

The call ended.

I stared at my phone.

For the first time, I wondered whether the unknown sender had been telling me the truth or leading me toward another trap.

I called Detective Mitchell.

She listened without interrupting.

"Do not go to that room alone," she said.

"I wasn't planning to.""

"Good. I'll arrange for an officer to accompany you, but I need you to understand something. Richard Cole may be trying to manipulate you into revealing what evidence you have.""

"Can we make him talk?""

"We can ask questions. Whether he answers is another matter.""

"What if he has the original will?""

"Then we need to establish its authenticity and how he obtained it.""

I glanced toward the ballroom.

The ceremony was supposed to begin in twelve minutes.

Lily was standing near the entrance, her hair pinned beneath a new veil. Ethan held both her hands while the wedding coordinator spoke quietly to them.

She looked up and caught my eye.

For a moment, I wanted to abandon everything and go to her.

Then I remembered my father's last birthday.

He had sat in our garden beneath the old oak tree, watching Lily arrange flowers in a glass vase. Daniel had been inside on a business call.

My father had beckoned me closer.

"Margaret, promise me something.""

I had smiled.

"Anything, Dad.""

"Never let a man convince you that keeping the peace is more important than telling the truth.""

At the time, I thought he was talking about Daniel's temper.

Now I wondered whether he had been trying to warn me about something much worse.

I approached Lily.

"I need to speak to Detective Mitchell for a little while.""

Her expression tightened.

"Is it Dad?""

"It's Richard Cole.""

She glanced toward the corridor.

"You're not going alone, are you?""

"No.""

She held my hands.

"Mom, I don't need you to protect me from the truth. I need you to come back.""

The words settled deep inside me.

"I promise.""

I kissed her cheek, then followed the detective toward the elevators.

Room 614 was on the sixth floor, at the end of a corridor lined with framed photographs of sailing boats.

A uniformed officer waited near the elevator while Detective Mitchell and I approached the door.

She knocked twice.

Richard opened it immediately.

He wore the same charcoal suit from the security footage. His briefcase rested on a small desk beside the window. A second chair had been placed opposite his, as though he had prepared for a formal interview.

"Margaret," he said.

Then he noticed the detective.

His smile vanished.

"I specifically asked to speak with her privately.""

"And she specifically asked for my assistance," Detective Mitchell replied.

"You can speak in my presence, or we can arrange a formal interview at the station.""

Richard stepped aside.

"Fine.""

The room smelled of stale champagne and expensive cologne.

On the desk lay a thick folder, a sealed envelope, and a photograph of my father.

I stopped when I saw it.

It was taken at his seventieth birthday dinner. He was laughing, one hand resting on my mother's shoulder. Lily sat beside him, her head tilted against his arm.

I had never seen that photograph outside our family albums.

"Why do you have that?"" I asked.

Richard closed the door.

"Because your father gave it to me.""

"When?""

"Three weeks before he died.""

He opened the folder and removed a document.

It was a photocopy of a legal agreement bearing my name, Daniel's name, and the name of a company I had never seen before.

Vantage Meridian Holdings.

My hands went cold.

"This is the company from the bank transfer.""

"Yes.""

"What does it have to do with my father?""

Richard pulled out a chair.

"Please sit down.""

"I'd rather stand.""

He nodded.

"Four years ago, Hayes Development was in serious financial trouble. Daniel had taken on more debt than the company could support. Several commercial properties were losing money, and a lender was threatening to call in a loan.""

I remembered Daniel's late-night meetings and the sudden cancellation of our family vacation.

"He told me the company was restructuring.""

"It was. But he was also moving assets between entities to keep certain creditors from reaching them.""

"Was that legal?""

"Some transfers were legitimate. Others may not have been.""

I stared at him.

"And my father's estate?""

"Thomas discovered that Daniel had been using the trust's existence to strengthen his position with the lender. He wasn't necessarily taking money from it at that stage. He was presenting the trust as part of the family's financial security.""

"But my father had forbidden that.""

"Correct.""

Richard tapped the photocopy.

"This agreement was designed to prevent Daniel from accessing the trust without independent approval.""

I leaned forward.

"Then why did the bank accept a transfer request today?""

"Because the agreement was never properly registered with the bank.""

"Why not?""

Richard looked away.

"That is one of the questions I hoped to answer.""

I felt anger rising through my chest.

"You were my father's attorney. You were responsible for protecting his wishes.""

"I know.""

"Then how could this happen?""

He pressed his fingertips together.

"Because someone removed the original agreement from his home before it could be finalized.""

"And you never reported it?""

"I believed it had been misplaced.""

"You believed it?""

His jaw tightened.

"Margaret, I made mistakes. I am not asking you to excuse them.""

I studied him.

For the first time, he looked less like the powerful attorney who had intimidated hotel staff and more like a man who had spent years carrying a secret.

"Who removed it?"" I asked.

"I don't know.""

"Was it Daniel?""

"I suspected he had access to the document. But I couldn't prove he took it.""

"Then why did you come to Room 614 with him today?""

Richard glanced at the sealed envelope.

"Because he told me the original had resurfaced.""

My pulse quickened.

"Where is it?""

He didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he pushed the envelope toward me.

"Your father left instructions with me. If the agreement could not be found, I was to give this to you.""

I stared at the handwriting on the front.

It was my father's.

*For Margaret. Only after Daniel attempts to access Lily's trust.*

I reached for it.

Richard held one hand over the envelope.

"Before you open it, you need to understand something. Daniel wasn't the only person who knew about your father's concerns.""

"Who else?""

"Your mother.""

I recoiled.

"My mother had nothing to do with the business.""

"She may not have understood the financial details. But Thomas told her he feared someone close to the family was working with Daniel.""

"Who?""

Richard's eyes shifted toward the window.

"I don't know.""

"You're asking me to believe you know nothing about a plan you helped prepare?""

"I'm telling you the truth.""

"Then why did you bring Daniel here today?""

"Because he said he had found the original agreement, and he wanted me to help him determine whether it was enforceable.""

"Why would he need to know that?""

Richard hesitated.

"Because he intended to use it.""

"To protect Lily?""

"No.""

The word came out so quietly that I almost missed it.

Richard opened his briefcase and removed another document.

"This is a draft of a transaction Daniel planned to complete after the wedding. It would transfer the controlling interest in Hayes Development to Vantage Meridian Holdings.""

I scanned the pages.

The transaction was dated for the following Monday.

The proposed buyer was Vantage Meridian.

The signatories were Daniel Hayes and Richard Cole.

But beneath them was a third name.

Margaret Hayes.

My signature appeared at the bottom of the page.

It looked exactly like mine.

I stepped back.

"I never signed this.""

"I know.""

"How can you know?""

"Because the document was prepared last week. I refused to witness your signature because you weren't present.""

"Then why is it here?""

"Daniel told me he had already obtained your consent electronically.""

My stomach turned.

"He forged it.""

"That is my suspicion.""

I looked at the document again.

If the transaction went through, the company would become controlled by Vantage Meridian. If Richard's claims were true, Daniel could use the transfer to shield assets from creditors while claiming that the family had approved the arrangement.

And if Lily's inheritance was moved into the same structure, she could lose control of it entirely.

"Why didn't you go to the police?"" I demanded.

Richard's face tightened.

"Because I was trying to recover the original agreement first. I thought if I could force Daniel to abandon the transaction, I could limit the damage.""

"You were protecting him.""

"I was protecting my own reputation, too.""

His admission stunned me.

He looked down at the desk.

"I told myself that if I could correct the paperwork quietly, no one would be harmed. I was wrong.""

I picked up my father's envelope.

"Why should I trust you now?""

"You shouldn't.""

For a moment, the room was silent.

Then Richard slid the folder toward Detective Mitchell.

"Take everything. I will cooperate with your investigation.""

The detective studied him.

"That is a significant change in position, Mr. Cole.""

"I know.""

"Why now?""

Richard looked at me.

"Because Daniel told me something today that made me realize this was no longer just a financial matter.""

"What did he say?"" I asked.

Richard swallowed.

"He said Thomas's death had solved the only problem that could have stopped him.""

My breath caught.

Detective Mitchell immediately took out her phone and called for another officer.

I gripped the edge of the desk.

"Are you saying Daniel killed my father?""

"I'm saying that's what he implied.""

"Why didn't you tell the police four years ago?""

"Because I thought he was speaking metaphorically. And because I was afraid of what an investigation would uncover about my own role.""

I wanted to strike him.

I wanted to scream.

Instead, I asked the question that mattered most.

"Did my father know Daniel intended to take Lily's money?""

Richard nodded.

"Yes.""

"How?""

"He had discovered the first unauthorized transfer attempt months before he died.""

The room seemed to contract around me.

"Where was the money supposed to go?""

Richard looked at the sealed envelope in my hand.

"Your father believed it was being moved through a company controlled by someone he trusted. He never identified that person to me.""

I broke the seal.

Inside was a handwritten letter and a small photograph.

The letter began with three words.

*My darling Margaret,*

My vision blurred as I read.

If you are reading this, Daniel has ignored the one warning I thought might protect you and Lily.

I have spent months trying to determine who is helping him. I cannot tell you everything because I no longer know whom I can trust.

But there is one person who has been watching our family for years. She has copies of the documents Daniel believes he destroyed.

Find her before he does.

At the bottom, my father had written a name.

Evelyn Shaw.

I looked up at Richard.

"Where can I find her?""

Before he could answer, the hotel room door flew open.

An officer stood in the doorway, breathing hard.

"Detective Mitchell, we have a problem.""

She turned.

"What happened?""

"The bridal suite is empty.""

My heart slammed against my ribs.

"What do you mean, empty?""

The officer looked directly at me.

"Your daughter is gone.""

I ran toward the door.

As I reached the corridor, my phone vibrated one final time.

The unknown number had sent a photograph of Lily's abandoned wedding bouquet lying on the floor beside a service elevator.

May you like

Beneath it were six words.

*Ask your mother what she promised Daniel.*
