Chapter 5: The Man Who Was in My Father's Bedroom

I had spent four years remembering my father's final night as a tragedy.

Now I was beginning to wonder whether someone had turned it into an opportunity.

Detective Mitchell asked me to accompany her to a quieter office on the hotel's ground floor. The wedding guests were still gathering outside the ballroom, unaware that the bride's father had become the subject of a financial investigation.

As we walked, my phone rang.

Daniel.

I let it ring twice before answering.

"Where are you?"" he demanded.

"With Detective Mitchell.""

A pause.

Then his voice softened.

"Margaret, please. Whatever she's told you, we can discuss this privately.""

"You told me my father died peacefully in his sleep.""

"He did.""

"Then why is the detective questioning the time of death?""

Silence.

I stopped walking.

"Daniel?""

"Because people are looking for someone to blame. Your father was old and sick. His heart was failing. I found him, called the ambulance, and did everything I could.""

"Why was Richard Cole at the house that night?""

The silence that followed was different.

Longer.

More deliberate.

"Who told you that?""

"No one who wants to answer your questions for you.""

He exhaled sharply.

"Richard came to discuss the estate. Your father had asked him to review some documents.""

"At midnight?""

"It was an emergency.""

"What kind of emergency?""

"I don't remember every detail.""

"You remember everything when it helps you, Daniel.""

His voice hardened.

"Listen to me. You are standing on the edge of something you don't understand. If you keep pushing, you could damage more than my reputation.""

I felt a chill crawl across my shoulders.

"Is that a threat?""

"No. It's a warning.""

"Then here's one for you. Don't contact me again unless you're prepared to tell the truth.""

I ended the call.

Detective Mitchell had heard enough to understand.

"Did he say anything about your father that struck you as unusual?""

I thought carefully.

"After the funeral, he told me not to ask too many questions about the estate because it would only prolong the grief.""

"And you accepted that?""

"I was grieving.""

She nodded without judgment.

"People often rely on the trust they've built over years. That doesn't make them foolish.""

Her words nearly broke me.

I had spent the past hour wondering how I could have been so blind. Hearing someone acknowledge that trust could be manipulated made it possible to breathe again.

Detective Mitchell opened a file on her tablet.

"Your father's medical records show he was admitted to the hospital on October fourteenth. His attending physician documented a severe cardiac condition, but the final report records his death at 11:40 p.m.""

I stared at the screen.

"Daniel told me he died shortly after ten.""

"According to the ambulance report, your husband called emergency services at 10:17 p.m. He stated that he had found your father unresponsive approximately fifteen minutes earlier.""

"That's impossible.""

"Why?""

"Because Daniel called me at 10:05. He said Dad was asleep and that I shouldn't come over because I was exhausted.""

Detective Mitchell's expression sharpened.

"Are you certain of the time?""

"I remember because I was watching the clock. My mother had gone home, and I was waiting for Daniel to return. He said he was staying with Dad overnight.""

I pulled up my old messages.

The conversation was still there.

At 10:05 p.m., Daniel had written:

*He's finally sleeping. Go to bed, sweetheart. I'll call you in the morning.*

At 10:42, he had sent another message.

*I'm sorry. Your father is gone.*

I showed the detective.

She read both messages carefully.

"That gives us a clearer timeline, but it doesn't establish what happened inside the house.""

"What are you saying?""

"I'm saying we need the medical records, the original estate documents, and statements from everyone who was present.""

"Richard Cole.""

"Yes.""

"And Daniel.""

"Yes.""

She paused.

"There's also something else. Your father's home security system recorded a vehicle entering the driveway at 9:48 p.m. that night. The original footage was overwritten, but the system retained a motion log.""

"Whose vehicle?""

"We're trying to identify it.""

I thought of the photograph from Room 614.

Daniel. Vanessa. Richard.

Three people connected by secrets, money, and a hotel room.

"Detective, do you think my father was murdered?""

She didn't answer immediately.

"I think it's too early to draw that conclusion. His medical condition provides a plausible explanation for his death. But the discrepancies warrant further investigation.""

I appreciated her honesty, even though I hated the uncertainty.

When we returned to the lobby, Ethan was waiting near the elevators.

"Lily wants to see you," he said.

"She also wants to know if the wedding is still happening.""

I looked toward the ballroom.

The white flowers were beginning to wilt under the lights. Guests whispered behind their champagne glasses. My mother stood beside the entrance, speaking quietly to the wedding coordinator.

I had dreamed of this day since Lily was a little girl.

I had imagined walking her down the aisle, watching Daniel cry when he saw her in her dress, and dancing with my husband while our daughter began her new life.

Instead, Daniel was somewhere in the hotel trying to protect himself.

And I was investigating the man I had loved for twenty-four years.

"Tell Lily she doesn't owe anyone a ceremony," I said.

"If she wants to postpone it, we'll support her.""

Ethan nodded.

"She doesn't want to postpone it.""

I looked at him in surprise.

"She says she won't let her father take this day from her.""

Tears stung my eyes.

"She's stronger than I was at her age.""

"She's stronger because she watched you stand up to him today.""

I shook my head.

"I should have done it years ago.""

"Maybe. But you're doing it now.""

For the first time that afternoon, I allowed myself to believe that my daughter's future might survive this disaster.

Then Ethan's expression changed.

"There's something else.""

"What?""

"Daniel came looking for Lily. He said he needed her to sign a document before the ceremony.""

My blood ran cold.

"What document?""

"He wouldn't show me. He said it was an insurance form related to the wedding.""

"Did Lily sign it?""

"No. I told him she'd review it after the ceremony.""

I grabbed Ethan's arm.

"Where is it?""

"He took it with him.""

I called Lily immediately.

She answered on the first ring.

"Mom?""

"Did your father ask you to sign something?""

"Yes. He said the wedding insurance company needed my signature because of the delay.""

"Did he tell you what the document was?""

"No. I told him to leave it with me.""

"Good. Don't sign anything he gives you.""

There was a pause.

"Mom, what is he doing?""

"I don't know yet.""

My phone vibrated.

A message from the unknown number appeared.

*The wedding document is not insurance. It's a release of liability for the trust transfer. He needs Lily's signature because yours is being challenged.*

I felt the lobby sway around me.

Daniel wasn't merely trying to move the money.

He was trying to make Lily responsible for the transfer.

If she signed, he could claim that she had authorized the transaction herself.

I showed the message to Ethan.

His jaw clenched.

"He's trying to frame her.""

"Or make her part of it without her understanding.""

We found Lily in the bridal suite. She was sitting in front of the mirror while a makeup artist carefully repaired the tears on her cheeks.

When I showed her the message, she stood so quickly that her chair scraped across the floor.

"He wanted me to sign away my own inheritance?""

"That's what the message claims," I said.

"We need to verify it.""

Lily removed her veil and placed it on the table.

"Then I'm done pretending everything is normal.""

She took my hand.

"I want the ceremony to happen. But I want Dad nowhere near it.""

My mother looked at her in disbelief.

"Sweetheart, he is your father.""

"And I am his daughter. That didn't stop him from lying to me.""

No one argued.

We agreed that Daniel would not escort Lily down the aisle. Ethan's mother offered to accompany her instead, and my daughter accepted.

It wasn't the wedding any of us had imagined.

But it would be her choice.

As the coordinator left to make the arrangements, my phone rang again.

This time, the caller ID showed a name I recognized from the photograph.

Richard Cole.

I answered without speaking.

"Margaret," he said smoothly.

"I understand Detective Mitchell has been asking questions.""

"How do you know that?""

"Daniel called me. He's concerned about you.""

"Then he can answer his own questions.""

Richard sighed.

"I think we should meet. There are matters concerning your father's estate that you need to understand before you make accusations that cannot be withdrawn.""

"Where?""

"Room 614.""

My skin prickled.

"Why there?""

"Because I have documents that should never have been taken from your father's house.""

I looked at Lily.

She was watching me.

"Bring them to the police," I said.

"I can't.""

"Why not?""

His voice dropped.

"Because one of those documents proves that Daniel didn't forge your signature.""

My heart stopped.

May you like

Richard continued.

"But it also proves that your father knew exactly what Daniel was planning.""
