Chapter 6: The Brother Who Carried the Guilt

The message stayed on my phone screen.

*Ask Ethan what he did.*

Five words.

That was all.

But sometimes five words could destroy years of trust.

I looked at my brother.

Ethan looked away.

That hurt more than if he had shouted.

Because guilt didn’t need an explanation.

It had a way of showing itself.

“Daniel…”

His voice was quiet.

I held up the phone.

“No.””

He stopped.

“Not another excuse.””

His face tightened.

“I wasn’t going to make an excuse.””

“Then tell me.””

The room was silent.

Lily stood beside me, holding my hand.

Vanessa watched Ethan carefully.

Everyone was waiting.

For once, nobody was protecting me from the truth.

Ethan sat down slowly.

He looked older than he had the day before.

Like carrying a secret had aged him.

“I made a mistake.””

My jaw tightened.

“What kind of mistake?””

He rubbed his hands together.

“The kind you think you can fix if you keep trying.””

“That’s not an answer.””

He looked at Lily.

Then immediately looked away.

“I never wanted her involved.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Her?””

He nodded.

“Marlene.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“You were involved with Marlene.””

“No.””

The answer came fast.

“I mean I was involved in what she was doing. Not with her.””

“Then explain.””

Ethan took a deep breath.

“Before Sarah died, I was struggling.””

I stared at him.

“Struggling?””

“I had debt.””

The confession surprised me.

Not because he had problems.

Everyone did.

Because I had no idea.

“How much?””

“Enough.””

“That’s not an amount.””

“Enough that I was scared.””

He looked down.

“Marlene knew.””

I felt my stomach turn.

“She found out?””

“Yes.””

“And she used that against you.””

Ethan nodded.

“She said she could help.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“She didn’t help him.””

Ethan looked at her.

“I know that now.””

I turned toward Vanessa.

“What happened?””

She answered.

“Marlene offered to pay his debts. In exchange, she wanted information.””

“Information about Sarah?””

“Yes.””

My hands curled into fists.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at the envelope.

“Because Sarah had started asking questions.””

“About the money?””

“About everything.””

I looked back at Ethan.

“What did you tell her?””

His eyes closed.

“Nothing important.””

“That’s not an answer either.””

He swallowed.

“I told her when Sarah was meeting people. I told her what Sarah was researching.””

The room went silent.

Lily looked up.

“Uncle Ethan…”

The pain in her voice was worse than anger.

Ethan looked like he had been hit.

“I’m sorry.””

She stepped closer to me.

“You helped Grandma?””

Ethan shook his head quickly.

“No.””

“But you told her things.””

“Yes.””

“Then you helped her.””

He couldn’t argue.

Because she was right.

I looked at my brother.

The man who taught my daughter to throw a baseball.

The man who stood beside me when I buried my wife.

“You gave Marlene information.””

“Yes.””

“Information she used against my wife.””

“I didn’t know she was going to hurt her.””

The words came out desperate.

I stared at him.

“You didn’t know?””

“No.””

“You didn’t think maybe a woman secretly paying your debts while asking about my wife was suspicious?””

“I thought she was trying to protect the family.””

I laughed quietly.

A painful laugh.

“Protect the family.””

That phrase again.

I walked away from him.

Because if I stayed too close, I didn’t trust myself.

The person I was angry at wasn’t just Ethan.

It was myself.

For believing people because I wanted to.

For ignoring the small signs.

For thinking love meant giving people the benefit of the doubt forever.

Vanessa opened the folder again.

“There’s more.””

I looked at her.

“There’s always more.””

She pulled out another document.

“This is from Sarah’s private account.””

I frowned.

“My wife had a private account?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“Because she was preparing.””

“Preparing for what?””

“To leave.””

The words cut deeper than I expected.

I stared at the document.

“She wanted to leave me?””

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“She wanted to leave Marlene’s influence.””

I didn’t understand.

“She was planning to move?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

Vanessa’s eyes softened.

“Because she didn’t know who was watching.””

I looked at Ethan.

He lowered his head.

“Sarah found out Marlene had access to your home.””

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa placed another paper on the table.

“A list.””

I looked down.

My name.

Lily’s name.

Dates.

Times.

My schedule.

My work hours.

Lily’s school activities.

My hands went cold.

“Who made this?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at Ethan.

He shook his head.

“Not me.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Then who?””

She said nothing.

That silence told me enough.

I grabbed my phone.

I needed to see something.

I opened my messages.

Then my recent calls.

Then my security camera app.

And I froze.

The camera history from the last week was missing.

Deleted.

Someone had removed the recordings.

My house.

My cameras.

My family.

Someone had been inside my life without me knowing.

“Daniel.””

Vanessa’s voice pulled me back.

“You need to leave.””

I looked at her.

“Where?””

“Somewhere they don’t expect.””

“They?””

She looked at Ethan.

Then at me.

“Marlene wasn’t working alone.””

Before I could respond, the lights went out.

The entire house dropped into darkness.

Lily gasped.

I immediately reached for her.

“It’s okay.””

But my voice didn’t sound convincing.

The silence afterward was worse.

No electricity.

No refrigerator.

No sound.

Just darkness.

Then we heard something.

A noise from upstairs.

A drawer opening.

My body went still.

Someone was inside.

Ethan stood.

“Daniel.””

“I know.””

I moved slowly toward the hallway.

Vanessa whispered:

“Don’t.””

But I had already taken the first step.

Because that wasn’t just my house.

That was where my daughter slept.

I wasn’t letting anyone walk through it.

I reached the stairs.

The darkness swallowed everything above me.

Then came another sound.

A floorboard creaking.

Someone moving.

I turned to Ethan.

“Stay with Lily.””

He nodded.

I climbed.

One step.

Two.

Three.

At the top of the stairs, I saw the bedroom door slightly open.

My bedroom.

The room Sarah and I shared.

The room where she had left me behind.

A faint beam of light moved across the floor.

Someone was inside.

I pushed the door open.

“Who’s there?””

The light disappeared.

For a second, nothing happened.

Then a voice answered from the darkness.

“You should have listened to Sarah.””

My entire body froze.

Because I knew that voice.

It wasn’t Marlene.

It wasn’t Ethan.

It wasn’t Vanessa.

It belonged to someone I had trusted even more.

Someone who had held my hand while I cried after losing my wife.

Someone who had told me they were there for me.

The person stepped into the light.

And I felt the last piece of my old life break apart.

Because standing in my bedroom…

May you like

Holding Sarah’s missing journal…

Was the one person I never thought I would have to fear.
