Chapter 7: The Truth Hidden in Sarah’s Journal

For a few seconds, I forgot how to breathe.

The person standing in my bedroom wasn’t a stranger.

It wasn’t someone I could easily hate.

It was someone who had sat at my kitchen table after my wife died.

Someone who brought food when I couldn’t force myself to cook.

Someone who told me, “Daniel, Sarah would want you to be strong.””

It was Sarah’s closest friend.

Rachel.

She stood near the window, holding the leather journal against her chest.

The same journal I had searched for.

The same journal my wife had hidden.

The same journal that now sat in Rachel’s hands.

I stared at her.

“Rachel?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I knew this day would come.””

My heart pounded.

“What are you doing in my house?””

She looked down at the journal.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I almost laughed.

That sentence had become poison.

Everyone who betrayed me seemed to use the same words.

Protect you.

Help you.

Keep you safe.

But somehow, I was always the last person to know the truth.

“You broke into my bedroom.””

“I didn’t break in.””

“Then how are you here?””

She didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“Rachel.””

Her hands tightened around the journal.

“I had a key.””

The words hit me.

“A key?””

“Sarah gave it to me.””

“Why?””

“Because she knew something was going to happen.””

I looked at the journal.

“And she gave you that?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you give it to me?””

Rachel looked away.

That was the moment I knew.

She had her own secret.

“Why didn’t you give it to me?””

Her voice became quiet.

“Because Sarah told me not to.””

I stared at her.

“My wife told you not to give me her journal?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because she didn’t know who was safe.””

The answer felt like a knife.

Because it meant Sarah had been surrounded by people she couldn’t trust.

Including me.

I shook my head.

“No.””

Rachel looked at me.

“Daniel—”

“No.””

I pointed at the journal.

“You’re holding something my wife left behind.””

“Yes.””

“You knew she was afraid.””

“Yes.””

“You knew something was wrong.””

“Yes.””

“And you watched me bury her without telling me.””

Rachel closed her eyes.

“I wanted to.””

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

“Why?””

Her voice cracked.

“Because Sarah made me promise.””

I stared at her.

“A promise?””

“She told me if anything happened to her, I couldn’t give you the journal until you found the truth yourself.””

My anger disappeared for a moment.

Not because I forgave her.

Because I was confused.

“What truth?””

Rachel looked at me.

“The truth about who was watching your family.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Watching?””

She nodded.

“Sarah believed someone had been monitoring her.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I’m not asking you to believe me.””

She handed me the journal.

“I’m asking you to read it.””

I took it slowly.

The leather cover felt familiar.

Sarah used this journal every night.

She wrote recipes.

Ideas.

Thoughts.

Little things she wanted to remember.

I had seen it many times.

I never imagined it contained secrets.

I opened the first page.

Most of it was normal.

Notes.

Dates.

Random thoughts.

Then I reached the middle.

The handwriting changed.

The letters became sharper.

More rushed.

*March 14*

*I think someone accessed my files.*

I looked at the date.

Three months before Sarah died.

I turned the page.

*March 18*

*Daniel thinks I’m stressed. I hate lying to him, but I don’t know what else to do.*

My chest tightened.

Another page.

*March 25*

*Marlene knows too much.*

I looked up.

Rachel was watching me.

I turned the page.

*April 2*

*Ethan is scared. I think he made a mistake, but I don’t think he understands how dangerous this has become.*

My jaw tightened.

Ethan.

Even Sarah knew.

I turned another page.

*April 10*

*I found the connection.*

Below it, several names were written.

Marlene.

Ethan.

Rachel.

My hand stopped.

I looked at Rachel.

“You’re on this list.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

“Why?””

“Because Sarah was tracking everyone who had contact with the situation.””

“Situation?””

Rachel sat on the edge of the bed.

“Daniel, Sarah discovered something about your family.””

“What?””

She looked at the journal.

“Your wife wasn’t investigating money.””

I frowned.

“Then what was she investigating?””

Rachel took a breath.

“A woman named Claire.””

The name meant nothing to me.

“Who is Claire?””

“She worked with Sarah.””

“Vanessa mentioned someone from Sarah’s work.””

Rachel nodded.

“Claire discovered financial problems at the company Sarah worked for.””

“And?””

“She found evidence someone was moving money illegally.””

I stared at her.

“Marlene?””

“No.””

Rachel shook her head.

“Marlene was involved, but she wasn’t the person controlling it.””

The room became silent.

“Who was?””

Rachel looked at me.

“That’s what Sarah was trying to find out.””

I flipped through the pages faster.

Then I found something.

A photo.

I pulled it out.

It showed Sarah standing outside a building with another person.

A man.

The image was blurry.

But I recognized him.

My stomach dropped.

“No.””

Rachel looked at me.

“You know him?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because the man in the photo wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone I had seen hundreds of times.

Someone who attended family events.

Someone who knew my daughter.

Someone who had been in my home.

I looked at Rachel.

“Where did Sarah get this?””

“She took it.””

“When?””

“Two days before she died.””

My hands shook.

“Why didn’t she show me?””

Rachel’s eyes filled with sadness.

“Because she was going to.””

“Going to?””

“She planned to tell you that night.””

I looked up.

“What happened?””

Rachel looked down.

“Someone stopped her.””

The words were barely audible.

My heart started racing.

“Who?””

Rachel didn’t answer.

Instead, she looked toward the bedroom door.

Then toward the window.

Her expression changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“What?””

She whispered:

“We need to leave.””

I heard it too.

A car door closing outside.

Rachel stood quickly.

“They found us.””

I grabbed the journal.

“Who?””

She moved toward the door.

“Daniel, there isn’t time.””

“No.””

I stepped in front of her.

“Not again.””

She stopped.

I held up the journal.

“I’m done being told to run without answers.””

Rachel stared at me.

Then she said something that made my blood turn cold.

“The person who killed Sarah knows you have this.””

My throat tightened.

“How?””

Rachel looked at the journal.

“Because Sarah didn’t hide the journal from them.””

She paused.

“She hid it from you.””

I froze.

“What?””

Rachel’s voice shook.

“Daniel…”

She pointed at the journal.

“Your wife left something in there for you.””

I opened it.

Pages fell loose from the binding.

A small envelope slipped out.

My name was written across it.

But underneath my name were six words.

Words that made my heart stop.

*“Open this when you know the truth.””*

Before I could touch it, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

No one spoke for several seconds.

Then a familiar voice whispered:

“Daniel, don’t open that envelope.””

I froze.

Because I knew the voice.

It belonged to the person standing downstairs.

The person who had just walked into my home.

The person who had been pretending to help me all along.

And then the voice said:

“If you open it, you’ll find out why Sarah really died.””
