Chapter 8: The Last Message From Sarah
The voice on the phone made my blood run cold.
Because I knew it.
Not from a memory.
Not from a recording.
From a person standing somewhere inside my house.
A person who had spent months pretending to care.
I slowly lowered the phone from my ear.
Rachel looked at me.
“Who was it?””
I didn’t answer immediately.
My eyes moved toward the bedroom door.
Then toward the hallway.
Someone was downstairs.
Someone who knew exactly what I had found.
Someone who knew about the envelope.
I looked at Rachel.
“It was Ethan.””
Her face changed.
“No.””
“He told me not to open this.””
Rachel grabbed my arm.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
I pulled away.
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
Almost calm.
And that scared me.
Because I wasn’t reacting anymore.
I was understanding.
“Everyone has been telling me what to do.””
I held up the envelope.
“Don’t open this.””
I looked at the journal.
“Don’t read that.””
I looked toward the hallway.
“Don’t ask questions.””
My jaw tightened.
“I’m done.””
Rachel stared at me.
“Daniel…”
“No more secrets.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
Sarah’s handwriting.
My hands shook before I even read the first line.
*Daniel,*
*If you are reading this, then I was right. Someone found out what I knew.*
I swallowed.
The room felt smaller.
I continued.
*I need you to understand something before you read the rest. I never stopped trusting you. I stopped trusting the world around us.*
My vision blurred slightly.
Because that sentence hurt.
Sarah had believed in me.
Even when I thought she was hiding from me.
I kept reading.
*The reason I didn’t tell you everything is not because I thought you would betray me. It’s because I knew you would try to protect me. And that would put you in danger.*
I closed my eyes.
For months, I had wondered why she kept things from me.
Why she didn’t come to me.
Why she carried fear alone.
And now I finally understood.
She knew exactly who I was.
She knew I would run toward the fire.
Even if it burned me.
The letter continued.
*Marlene is involved, but she is not the person behind everything. She is afraid. She has been afraid for a long time.*
I looked at Rachel.
She nodded slowly.
“Keep going.””
I did.
*Ethan made a mistake. A serious one. But I believe he regrets it. He was manipulated because someone found his weakness.*
My eyes moved to the door.
Ethan.
My brother.
The person I had spent the last day trying to understand.
*The person you need to worry about is not the one who looks guilty. It is the one who looks innocent.*
I stopped.
That sentence sat there.
Heavy.
Because everyone involved had looked innocent.
Marlene.
Ethan.
Rachel.
Even the people who claimed to be helping.
I turned the page.
There was only one sentence.
*Daniel, trust the person who has the least to gain from the truth coming out.*
Then below it was a name.
I stared.
My heart slowed.
Because the name was impossible.
“No.””
Rachel looked at me.
“What?””
I couldn’t speak.
I handed her the letter.
She read the name.
Her face changed.
“That can’t be right.””
But it was.
Sarah’s handwriting.
Sarah’s words.
A name neither of us expected.
Vanessa.
The woman who had called me.
The woman who brought the evidence.
The woman who claimed she wanted to help.
My phone buzzed.
Another message.
This time from Ethan.
*Come downstairs. Alone. We need to talk.*
I stared at the screen.
Rachel saw it.
“Don’t go.””
“I need answers.””
“He could be trying to separate you.””
“He already had chances to hurt me.””
I looked at the envelope.
“But he hasn’t.””
Rachel shook her head.
“You don’t know that.””
No.
I didn’t.
That was the worst part.
I didn’t know anything anymore.
I walked toward the door.
Rachel followed.
“Daniel.””
I stopped.
She looked scared.
Not nervous.
Scared.
“Whatever happens downstairs, remember one thing.””
“What?””
“Sarah loved you.””
I looked at her.
“Why are you telling me that?””
“Because when people start revealing secrets, they try to make you question everything.””
Her voice softened.
“Don’t let them make you question that.””
I nodded.
Then we walked downstairs.
The living room looked exactly the same.
That was the strangest part.
The same couch.
The same family pictures.
The same lamp in the corner.
A normal room.
Except nobody inside it was normal anymore.
Ethan stood near the window.
His back was turned.
Lily sat on the couch beside Vanessa.
When she saw me, she immediately stood.
“Daddy.””
I walked to her.
“You okay?””
She nodded.
But her eyes moved toward Ethan.
She was scared of him now.
That broke my heart.
Ethan noticed.
And it hurt him.
“I never wanted that.””
I looked at him.
“You wanted what?””
“For Lily to be afraid of me.””
“Then why did you hide the truth?””
His face tightened.
“Because I was trying to fix what I broke.””
“Did you?””
“No.””
The honesty surprised me.
He turned around.
“I made everything worse.””
Vanessa stood.
“Ethan.””
He looked at her.
“No. He deserves to know.””
The room became quiet.
Ethan looked at me.
“Sarah found out Marlene was being used by someone else.””
“Who?””
He hesitated.
Then said:
“Your father.””
I froze.
My father had been dead for five years.
“What?””
Ethan shook his head.
“Not your father. His company.””
I stared.
“My father’s old company?””
“Yes.””
“That makes no sense.””
“It does.””
He walked toward the table.
“After your father died, control of the company changed hands. Certain people started moving money through accounts connected to family members.””
“Marlene?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because she was desperate.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“And you?””
Vanessa looked away.
“I was trying to expose it.””
“And Sarah?””
Ethan nodded.
“She found the evidence.””
My phone rang.
Everyone looked at it.
Unknown number.
Again.
This time, I answered.
No one spoke.
Then a recording played.
Sarah’s voice.
My knees almost gave out.
“Daniel…”
Her voice.
Real.
Alive.
My eyes filled instantly.
The room disappeared.
“Daniel, if you’re hearing this, then things went wrong.””
I covered my mouth.
Lily moved closer.
“Mommy?””
The recording continued.
“I need you to know I tried to come home.””
A pause.
A shaky breath.
“I tried.””
My chest tightened.
“But someone stopped me.””
The recording crackled.
Then Sarah whispered:
“The person responsible is not Marlene.””
Everyone froze.
Sarah continued.
“It’s someone you trust.””
The recording ended.
The phone went silent.
Nobody moved.
Then Lily spoke.
A tiny whisper.
“I know who it is.””
I looked down.
“What?””
She was crying.
But she wasn’t looking at Ethan.
She wasn’t looking at Vanessa.
She was looking toward the front door.
“Mommy showed me.””
My heart raced.
“Showed you what?””
She pointed.
“At the house.””
I didn’t understand.
“What house?””
She looked at me.
“The place where she hid the first clue.””
I stepped closer.
“Lily, what place?””
Her voice trembled.
“The old house.””
I froze.
Because there was only one old house Sarah had ever mentioned.
The house everyone told me not to visit.
The house my family said was sold years ago.
My childhood home.
Then the front door opened.
Slowly.
Everyone turned.
And standing there was the last person I expected to see.
Someone holding a photograph of Sarah.
Someone who should have been impossible to find.
Someone who whispered:
“Daniel…”
My heart stopped.
“Your wife asked me to come back.””
I stared at the woman in the doorway.
Because I knew her.
But I also knew she was dead.
May you like
At least…
that was what everyone had told me.
