Chapter 11: The Passenger Nobody Recorded

Officer Grant took Laura's letter and placed it inside an evidence folder.

Then he made another call.

This time, he contacted the detective who had handled the original accident investigation.

While we waited, I searched the attic for anything else that might explain Laura's final message.

I found an old calendar.

A hospital appointment card.

Three photographs of Ethan.

And a small envelope containing a receipt from a roadside emergency service.

The date matched Laura's accident.

The location matched the country road where her car had crashed.

But the receipt listed two people.

Vanessa Mercer.

And Thomas Bell.

I showed it to Officer Grant.

“Thomas Bell was the hospital transport employee who took Ethan.””

He examined the receipt.

“Then why was he with Vanessa on the night of Laura's accident?””

I had no answer.

My phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

**Michael, I'm sorry. I should have told you years ago. My name is Thomas Bell.

I was the man who took Ethan from St. Mary's. I need to meet you.**

I stared at the message.

Officer Grant leaned over.

“Reply. Ask where.””

I typed.

*Where are you?*

The response came almost immediately.

*Richmond General Hospital. Emergency entrance. Come alone if you want the truth.*

Officer Grant shook his head.

“No chance.””

He arranged for two officers to accompany me.

We arrived at the hospital forty minutes later.

An elderly man sat outside the emergency entrance.

He was thin, wearing a brown jacket, and holding a walking stick.

When he saw me, he stood slowly.

“Mr. Carter?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Thomas Bell.””

I looked at him.

“You took my son.””

He lowered his head.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Thomas looked toward the road.

“Because I was told he was going to die.””

“Dr. Reed said he was stable.””

Thomas nodded.

“He was. But Daniel told me the hospital had made a mistake. He said the child belonged to a woman who had died during childbirth.””

“That was a lie.””

“I know that now.””

He sat down.

I remained standing.

“Tell me what happened.””

Thomas took a long breath.

“Daniel paid me to move Ethan to a private clinic. He said it was a temporary arrangement. He showed me signed documents.””

“Documents I never signed.””

“I understand that now.””

“Who gave him permission?””

Thomas looked away.

“Vanessa.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“Did she know Ethan was alive?””

“Yes.””

“Did she know where he was going?””

“Yes.””

I stared at him.

“Then why did she tell me she didn't know?””

Thomas swallowed.

“Because she was involved in the entire arrangement.””

I sat beside him.

“Tell me about the accident.””

His hands began trembling.

“I was in the back seat.””

The words hit me harder than I expected.

“You were in Laura's car?””

Thomas nodded.

“Vanessa was driving. Laura was beside her. We were on our way to meet Daniel.””

“Why?””

“Laura had discovered that Ethan was alive. She wanted him returned.””

I closed my eyes.

Thomas continued.

“She had a bag with her. Inside were the original hospital records and a recording of Daniel admitting he had arranged the transfer.””

“Where is that recording?””

“I don't know. Daniel took it.””

“What happened on the road?””

Thomas stared at the pavement.

“Laura and Vanessa started arguing. Laura said she was going to the police. Vanessa told her she would lose everything.””

“And?””

“Laura reached for the steering wheel.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because Vanessa refused to stop the car.””

My throat tightened.

Thomas wiped his forehead.

“The car swerved. We hit the barrier. I remember the airbags.

I remember glass everywhere. When I woke up, Laura was unconscious.””

“What about Vanessa?””

“She was bleeding, but conscious.””

“And you?””

“I got out through the back door.””

He paused.

“Then I saw Daniel's car.””

My blood ran cold.

“Daniel was there?””

Thomas nodded.

“He arrived minutes later. Vanessa had called him before the crash.””

I stood.

“Why?””

“I don't know. But Daniel took the bag from Laura's feet. Then he told me to leave.””

“What about Laura?””

Thomas's eyes filled.

“She was still alive.””

I felt my heart stop.

“What?””

“She was breathing. I told Daniel we needed an ambulance. He said he'd handle it.””

“Did he?””

Thomas shook his head.

“He told me to get into his car. I refused. Then Vanessa came over and said Laura was already gone.””

I stared at him.

“Was she?””

“I don't know.””

I stepped backward.

For nine years, I had believed my wife died in an accident.

Now I was being told she might have been alive after the crash.

“Why didn't you tell the police?””

Thomas lowered his head.

“Daniel threatened my family. He told me he had photographs of my daughter and knew where she lived. I was afraid.””

I looked at Officer Grant.

He was recording everything.

“Thomas, did you see anyone else at the scene?””

Thomas hesitated.

Then he nodded.

“A child.””

I froze.

“What child?””

“A little girl. Maybe six or seven years old. She was sitting in the back of Daniel's car.””

I stared at him.

“Who was she?””

Thomas shook his head.

“I couldn't see her clearly. But I remember Vanessa opening the rear door and telling her to stay quiet.””

I thought of Brielle.

She would have been seven at the time.

But there was another possibility.

Maya would have been a newborn.

I looked at Thomas.

“Was the child Brielle?””

He shook his head.

“No. The girl was older.””

My phone vibrated.

It was Rachel.

I answered.

“Rachel?””

“Michael, where are you?””

“At the hospital. Why?””

“Maya just told me something.””

My stomach tightened.

“What happened?””

“She remembered a woman visiting her at school when she was younger. She said the woman showed her a photograph of Laura.””

I looked at Officer Grant.

“Who was the woman?””

Rachel paused.

“She said the woman called herself Aunt Catherine.””

I felt my blood run cold.

I knew that name.

Catherine Hayes.

The woman who had adopted Ethan.

I asked Rachel to send me the photograph.

A moment later, it arrived.

It showed Maya at age six, sitting beside a woman with dark hair.

The woman was holding a little boy.

I enlarged the image.

The boy had a small scar above his left eyebrow.

The same scar as the teenager in Daniel's photograph.

Ethan.

I stared at the picture.

“Thomas,” I said.

He looked up.

“Do you recognize this woman?””

He examined the photograph.

Then his face changed.

“That's Catherine Hayes.””

“Was she at the accident?””

Thomas nodded slowly.

“She arrived with Daniel.””

I felt dizzy.

“Why?””

He looked at me.

“Because she was supposed to take Ethan that night.””

I stared at the photograph again.

A little boy.

A woman.

My wife.

My daughter.

All connected by a secret that had been buried for nine years.

Then Thomas said something that made everything worse.

“Mr. Carter, Catherine wasn't just there to collect Ethan.””

“Then why was she there?””

Thomas leaned closer.

“Because Laura had discovered that the woman who adopted Ethan wasn't Catherine.””

I froze.

“What?””

He pointed at the photograph.

“That's not the woman who raised him.””

I looked again.

The woman in the photograph was holding Ethan.

But according to Thomas, she wasn't Catherine Hayes.

“Who is she?””

He swallowed.

“Her name is Elizabeth Ward.””

“Who is Elizabeth Ward?””

May you like

Thomas's voice dropped.

“The woman who was listed as the driver of the car that killed Laura.””
