Chapter 5: The Letter From My Dead Wife
I read Laura's letter seven times.
Each time, the words became harder to understand.
The handwriting was hers. The familiar slant of the capital letters. The little loop she always made at the end of her signature.
I had kept hundreds of her handwritten notes.
Birthday cards.
Shopping lists.
The tiny messages she used to leave inside my lunchbox.
There was no question.
The letter was real.
But the sentence at the top made no sense.
Please make sure Michael never discovers what happened the night Maya was born.
I looked at the photograph again.
There was no date.
No explanation.
Only the first paragraph and Laura's signature.
I called Daniel.
He didn't answer.
I called Vanessa.
Straight to voicemail.
Then I remembered something.
After Laura died, I had placed all her personal belongings in a wooden chest in our bedroom closet.
Vanessa had helped me organize everything when we married.
She had told me the chest was too painful to keep.
I'd refused to throw it away.
I went upstairs.
The chest was still there, tucked behind Vanessa's winter coats.
I dragged it into the middle of the room.
The brass lock was missing.
Inside were Laura's old scarves, photographs, birthday cards, and a small leather-bound diary.
I opened it carefully.
The first several pages contained ordinary things.
Appointments.
Grocery lists.
Notes about Maya's first words.
Then, three pages before the end, I found a date.
*September 14. Three days before Maya was born.*
Laura had written:
I wish Michael would stop asking why Daniel keeps calling. I told him Daniel is only helping with the house repairs, but I know that's not the truth.
I sat down.
The next entry was dated September 16.
Vanessa came over again. She says Daniel is making everything worse. She told me I should tell Michael before the baby arrives. I don't know how to do that.
I turned the page.
The handwriting became shakier.
Daniel says he wants to be involved. I told him no. Michael is the baby's father in every way that matters. I won't let Daniel destroy our family.
My hands went numb.
I read the entry again.
Daniel.
Laura.
Maya.
The implication was impossible to ignore.
I flipped to the next page.
It had been torn out.
Not carefully.
The paper had been ripped so hard that pieces remained caught in the binding.
I heard footsteps behind me.
Vanessa stood in the doorway.
“What are you doing?””
I held up the diary.
“Reading Laura's journal.””
Her expression changed.
“Put that away.””
“Why?””
“Because it's personal.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You've been hiding my daughter's journal, forging my signature, and apparently helping your brother claim my child. But Laura's journal is personal?””
Vanessa stepped inside.
“Michael, you don't know what you're reading.””
“Then explain it.””
She looked at the diary.
For the first time, she seemed genuinely frightened.
“Where did you get that?””
“It was in Laura's chest.””
“Daniel gave you something, didn't he?””
I didn't answer.
Vanessa closed the bedroom door.
“Michael, there are things you need to understand about Laura.””
I stood.
“Go ahead.””
She looked toward the hallway.
“Not with Maya in the house.””
“Maya is staying with me.””
“That's exactly the problem.””
I stared at her.
“What problem?””
Vanessa took a deep breath.
“You think you're protecting her, but you're making everything worse. Daniel has rights.””
“Show me the documents.””
“He has proof.””
“Then show me.””
She rubbed her forehead.
“You're not ready.””
I stepped closer.
“Stop deciding what I'm ready to know.””
Vanessa looked at me for a long moment.
Then she said something that changed the direction of the entire conversation.
“Laura wasn't faithful to you.””
The words were quiet.
Almost gentle.
But they struck like a physical blow.
I stared at her.
“Don't.””
“It's true.””
“Don't use my dead wife to cover up what you've done.””
“I'm not covering anything up.””
“You forged my signature.””
She looked away.
“Daniel handled the paperwork.””
“That's not an answer.””
Vanessa sat on the edge of the bed.
“Laura and Daniel had a relationship before she married you. It didn't end as cleanly as you think.””
I remembered Daniel standing at our wedding.
His hand on my shoulder.
His toast.
His promises.
I remembered him helping us move into this house.
I remembered him holding baby Maya at the hospital.
My stomach turned.
“Why didn't anyone tell me?””
“Because Laura begged us not to.””
“Why?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Because she was afraid you'd leave her.””
I shook my head.
“Then why did she write that you should tell me?””
Vanessa's face went blank.
I held up the diary.
“Because she knew something was coming. What happened the night Maya was born?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
I took out my phone.
“I'm calling Daniel.””
“Don't.””
“Then you tell me.””
She stood abruptly.
“You don't understand what you're doing.””
“I understand that my daughter has been punished for something that happened before she was born.””
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
“Maya was never supposed to be your responsibility.””
Silence.
The words seemed to surprise even her.
I looked at her.
“What did you just say?””
She pressed her lips together.
Then her phone rang.
Daniel's name appeared on the screen.
She answered.
“Not now.””
A man's voice came through loudly enough for me to hear.
“Did you tell him?””
Vanessa turned away.
“No.””
“Then I will.””
She ended the call.
I held out my hand.
“Give me the phone.””
“Absolutely not.””
“Then call him back.””
She shook her head.
“You need to listen to me. Daniel has been patient for nine years. He's done waiting.””
“For what?””
“For his daughter.””
I stared at her.
“Why now?””
Vanessa's voice cracked.
“Because he needs the house.””
I felt my blood run cold.
“What does Maya have to do with the house?””
She looked down.
“Everything.””
Before I could ask another question, the front door opened.
Daniel walked inside carrying a black leather briefcase.
He didn't knock.
He didn't call out.
He walked straight into the bedroom as though he owned the place.
“Michael,” he said.
I stepped between him and Vanessa.
“Get out.””
Daniel placed the briefcase on the bed.
“Not until you see what's inside.””
He opened it.
There were property documents, financial records, and a sealed envelope bearing the logo of a private medical laboratory.
Daniel removed the envelope.
“This,” he said, “is the reason I've been patient.””
I looked at the laboratory name.
Then at the date.
The test had been performed only four weeks earlier.
I pulled out the paper.
At the top was a heading.
*PATERNITY TEST RESULTS.*
Daniel folded his arms.
“Go ahead.””
I looked at the percentage.
Then I looked at him.
The result stated that Daniel Mercer was the biological father of Maya.
Probability: 99.99%.
My hands began to shake.
Vanessa started crying.
Daniel leaned closer.
“Now you understand.””
I looked at the report again.
Something was wrong.
The sample collection date was September 18.
Maya's school records showed she had been absent that day.
I looked at Daniel.
“Where did you get this sample?””
He smiled.
“From my daughter.””
I stared at him.
Then I noticed the name printed beneath the sample identification number.
It wasn't Maya's.
It was *Brielle Mercer.*
I looked up slowly.
“Why is Brielle's name on a paternity test claiming Maya is your daughter?””
Daniel's smile disappeared.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
May you like
And from the doorway, Brielle whispered:
“Because Mom told me it was just a medical test.””
