Chapter 8: The Signature I Never Remembered

I stared at the document until the letters blurred.

My signature.

My full name.

My handwriting.

And a statement claiming I had authorized the transfer of my newborn son to Daniel Mercer.

I had no memory of signing it.

None.

“Explain,” I said.

Vanessa sat down.

“When Laura delivered the babies, you were taken into another room.””

“I was with Laura.””

“You were there initially. But you collapsed.””

I remembered the delivery.

I remembered the doctors moving quickly.

I remembered Laura crying.

I remembered a nurse telling me there had been complications.

Then I remembered waking up in a hospital chair with an IV in my arm.

The doctor had told me one of the babies hadn't survived.

I had cried for hours.

I had held Maya and Brielle.

I had believed my son was gone.

Vanessa continued.

“You were given medication because your blood pressure dropped. Daniel brought the paperwork to you.””

I looked at the signature again.

“What did it say?””

“That Ethan needed to be transferred to a specialist facility.””

“Why would I sign a permanent guardianship transfer?””

“You didn't know it was permanent.””

I turned toward Dr. Reed.

“Is that possible?””

He examined the document.

“The form is unusual. It combines a medical transfer authorization with a temporary guardianship agreement. The wording is deliberately confusing.””

I felt sick.

“Who prepared it?””

Dr. Reed pointed to the bottom.

“Daniel Mercer.””

Brielle was standing by the window.

She hadn't spoken for several minutes.

Finally, she turned around.

“Mom, why did you tell me my father died?””

Vanessa looked up.

“What?””

“You told me my biological father died before I was born.””

Vanessa began crying again.

“Brielle—”

“You told me he was a good man who couldn't stay with us.””

“I was trying to give you a normal childhood.””

Brielle shook her head.

“Was that why you made me call Daniel Uncle?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

Brielle walked toward the table.

“Did you know he was my father?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

“And you let me believe he was just your brother?””

“I wanted to protect you.””

Brielle's voice rose.

“From my own father?””

Daniel had never been Vanessa's brother.

He had been Laura's former partner.

And he was the biological father of all three children.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Why did Laura give Brielle to you?””

Vanessa stared at her hands.

“Because I was desperate.””

She explained that years before, she had suffered several miscarriages. She and her former husband had divorced after the last one.

When Laura discovered she was carrying triplets, she asked Vanessa to help.

At first, the arrangement had been temporary.

Vanessa would care for Brielle while Laura recovered from the delivery.

But Daniel had other plans.

He wanted all three babies.

He had threatened to expose Laura's relationship with him and destroy her marriage.

Laura had been terrified that Michael would lose his trust in her.

So Vanessa offered to raise Brielle as her own.

Daniel agreed, provided he could remain involved.

But Laura changed her mind.

She wanted the children together.

She told Daniel that Michael would raise all three.

Daniel refused.

“He said he would rather lose them all than let you raise them,” Vanessa whispered.

I felt my chest tighten.

“And you helped him take Ethan?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I thought Daniel was arranging specialist treatment. I didn't know he planned to disappear with him.””

“Then why did you sign the hospital documents?””

“Because I believed he would return Ethan.””

I stared at her.

“You've spent nine years hiding this.””

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“Daniel.””

Her answer was immediate.

She described how Daniel had threatened her after Laura died.

He had told her that if she ever revealed the truth, he would expose her role in the transfer and accuse her of kidnapping Brielle.

He had also threatened to destroy the documents that proved she had legally adopted Brielle.

I looked at the adoption papers.

“Where are they?””

Vanessa reached into her handbag and removed a folded envelope.

“I kept copies.””

I opened it.

There were adoption documents, medical reports, and a letter from Laura.

The letter was dated two weeks before she died.

I recognized her handwriting.

*Vanessa,*

*If you are reading this, I hope you have finally found the courage to tell Michael everything. Brielle deserves to know who she is. Ethan deserves to come home. And Maya deserves to grow up with her brother and sister.*

I stopped reading.

The next paragraph made my eyes sting.

*I know I made mistakes. I know Michael may never forgive me for hiding the truth. But please don't let Daniel decide what happens to our children. He has already taken enough from us.*

At the bottom was one final sentence.

*The proof is in the blue box beneath the nursery floor.*

I looked up.

“What blue box?””

Vanessa went pale.

“I don't know.””

I showed her the letter.

She read the final sentence.

Then she shook her head.

“Laura never mentioned a blue box.””

I folded the letter.

“Where is the nursery?””

“It's Maya's old room.””

I looked at Brielle.

“Can you stay here with Dr. Reed for a few minutes?””

She nodded.

Vanessa stood.

“Michael, wait.””

I turned.

“Don't go looking for something that may not exist.””

“Why?””

She hesitated.

“Because Daniel knows about that box.””

My blood ran cold.

“How?””

“Laura told him before she died.””

I stared at her.

“And you knew?””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“I found a note in her belongings. I didn't know what was inside the box, but Daniel did.””

I walked out without another word.

Back at the house, I went straight to Maya's room.

The pink string lights were still hanging around the window. Her drawings covered the walls. A small wooden shelf held her stuffed animals.

I remembered Laura painting those walls.

I remembered her laughing when she got yellow paint in her hair.

For nine years, I had walked past this room believing I had lost only one child.

Now I knew the truth was worse.

I had lost a son who might still be alive.

I examined the floorboards near the old radiator.

Nothing.

Then I noticed a small square section beneath the window where the wood looked slightly different.

I fetched a screwdriver.

The board lifted easily.

Underneath was a metal box covered in dust.

Blue.

My hands trembled as I pulled it out.

Inside were photographs, hospital bracelets, and a small cassette recorder.

There were three bracelets.

Maya Carter.

Brielle Carter.

Ethan Carter.

I picked up the third one.

The plastic was yellowed with age.

Beneath it was a photograph of Laura holding all three babies.

She was smiling.

But there was something else in the box.

A folded envelope addressed to me.

*Michael — Open this only when you are ready to know what Daniel did.*

I opened it.

The first line was written in Laura's handwriting.

*My love, if you are reading this, then Daniel has probably told you that Ethan died.*

I sat down on the floor.

The letter continued.

*He didn't die. I saw him alive with my own eyes.*

My breath caught.

*Daniel took him because he believed he could use Ethan to force me to leave you. He wanted all three children, but I refused. Vanessa helped him hide the truth, and I have never forgiven her.*

I turned the page.

There was a name.

A location.

And a date.

*Ethan was taken to a private children's home outside Richmond. His name was changed to Ethan Mercer.*

I looked at the date.

Nine years earlier.

The final paragraph was shorter.

*Michael, there is one person who knows where Ethan is now. His name is Thomas Bell. If Daniel tells you he died, don't believe him.*

I heard a noise behind me.

Someone was standing in the doorway.

Brielle.

She was holding her phone.

“Dad?””

I looked up.

“What is it?””

She swallowed.

“Uncle Daniel just called me.””

I stood.

“What did he say?””

Her hands trembled.

“He said if I tell you anything else, he'll make sure Maya disappears.””

I took her phone.

The call was still connected.

I heard Daniel's voice.

“Michael, I assume you've found the box.””

I froze.

He laughed softly.

“Good. Then you know Ethan is alive.””

I gripped the phone.

“Where is my son?””

Daniel's voice turned cold.

“That's the problem, Michael.””

A pause.

Then he said:

“Ethan isn't the only child I've been hiding from you.””

The call ended.

And before I could process those words, another message appeared on Brielle's screen.

It was a photograph.

A teenage boy stood outside a school building.

He had dark hair, familiar eyes, and a small scar above his left eyebrow.

Underneath the photograph were six words.

*Ask Vanessa who adopted the third baby.*
