Chapter 2: The Things My Mother Knew

My mother arrived at my house the following morning at exactly nine.

She didn't call first.

She didn't knock gently.

She rang the doorbell three times, then began pounding on the front door as if I were deliberately ignoring an emergency.

I opened it.

Eleanor stood on my porch wearing a cream-colored coat, oversized sunglasses, and the expression she usually reserved for people who had disappointed her.

"Can I come in?""

"Good morning to you too, Mom.""

She stepped past me without waiting.

"Where's Maya?""

"Upstairs.""

"Good. We need to discuss this without her listening.""

I closed the door.

"What exactly do you want to discuss?""

She placed her handbag on the kitchen counter.

"Your behavior yesterday was unacceptable.""

I stared at her.

"That's what you came here to say?""

"You walked out of Daniel's wedding. You embarrassed your sister. You upset the entire family.""

"Vanessa humiliated my daughter.""

"She didn't humiliate anyone.""

"Mom, Maya cried.""

"Children cry.""

I looked at her, trying to understand how she could say something so cold.

"She asked me whether you considered her family.""

My mother's expression changed for a fraction of a second.

Then she reached into her handbag.

"Marcus, there's something I've been meaning to tell you.""

She removed a folded document and placed it on the counter.

I didn't touch it.

"What is that?""

"Something Claire signed before she died.""

My stomach tightened.

"Why are you bringing Claire into this?""

"Because you need to understand that things were never as simple as you believed.""

I unfolded the paper.

It was a photocopy of a legal document.

At the top was Claire's full name.

Below it were several paragraphs concerning guardianship, inheritance, and a financial account established for Maya.

I read the first page.

Then the second.

"What am I looking at?""

My mother folded her arms.

"Claire made arrangements for Maya's future. There was money involved.""

"What money?""

"An account. A substantial one.""

I looked up.

"How substantial?""

"Approximately two million dollars.""

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

Claire had come from a wealthy family. Her father had owned a successful construction company, and although he had passed away before Maya was born, Claire had inherited several properties and investments.

I knew there was money.

I didn't know there was this much.

"Where is it?"" I asked.

My mother looked uncomfortable.

"That's complicated.""

"No, it isn't. It's Maya's money. Where is it?""

"Your sister has been helping manage certain family affairs.""

I stared at her.

"Vanessa?""

"She has experience with finances.""

"Since when?""

"Marcus, don't start.""

I picked up the document again.

The date was three weeks before Claire died.

At the bottom was Claire's signature.

And beside it was another name.

Eleanor Hayes.

My mother.

"Why did you sign this?""

"Claire trusted me.""

I looked at the page more closely.

There was a clause stating that the funds would remain in a protected trust until Maya turned twenty-five, with distributions permitted for education, healthcare, and other approved expenses.

I read it again.

Then I noticed something strange.

The document listed a trustee.

Not my mother.

Not Vanessa.

A law firm.

"Who authorized Vanessa to manage anything?""

My mother looked away.

"She was helping with the paperwork.""

"That's not what I asked.""

"Claire wanted the family to remain involved.""

"Show me where it says that.""

Eleanor picked up her handbag.

"You're becoming aggressive.""

"I'm asking you about my daughter's inheritance.""

"Your sister has done nothing wrong.""

I laughed once, without humor.

"Then why are you defending her instead of showing me the records?""

My mother moved toward the door.

"Because I know how you get when Claire is involved.""

I stepped aside.

She stopped before leaving.

"One more thing, Marcus.""

"What?""

"Vanessa says you told people you would take legal action.""

"I haven't spoken to anyone about legal action.""

"Good. Don't.""

Then she left.

I stood in the kitchen holding the photocopy.

Something about the entire conversation felt rehearsed.

My mother hadn't come to apologize.

She hadn't come to explain the wedding.

She had come to warn me.

At eleven, Maya came downstairs.

She was wearing pink pajamas and carrying her stuffed rabbit.

"Is Grandma here?""

"She just left.""

"Did she come to see me?""

I hesitated.

"She came to talk to Daddy.""

Maya climbed onto a kitchen stool.

"Is she still mad?""

I poured her a glass of orange juice.

"I don't know, sweetheart.""

She stirred the juice with her straw.

"Maybe I should write her a sorry letter.""

My chest tightened.

"Why would you do that?""

"Because she looked upset yesterday.""

I crouched beside her.

"Maya, listen to me. You didn't do anything wrong. You don't have to apologize for wanting a chair.""

She nodded.

But I could tell she didn't entirely believe me.

After breakfast, I called the number printed on the legal document.

A woman answered.

"Good morning. Harper and Collins.""

"My name is Marcus Hayes. I'm calling about a trust established by Claire Hayes.""

There was a brief pause.

"Mr. Hayes, may I ask how you obtained our contact information?""

"My mother gave me a copy of a document.""

"Could you provide the trust reference number?""

I read it aloud.

The woman typed something.

Then her voice changed.

"Mr. Hayes, I need to transfer you to our senior estate attorney.""

"Why?""

"Because the account has an unresolved administrative issue.""

"What kind of issue?""

"I'd prefer that our attorney explain it.""

A few seconds later, another voice came on the line.

"This is Jonathan Collins.""

I introduced myself.

He listened without interrupting.

When I mentioned Vanessa's name, the silence became uncomfortable.

"Mr. Hayes," he finally said, "I need to ask you something important.""

"Go ahead.""

"Has your sister ever contacted you regarding Maya's trust?""

"No.""

"Has she ever asked you to sign any documents concerning the inheritance?""

"No.""

He exhaled slowly.

"Then I strongly recommend that you come to our office tomorrow morning.""

"Why?""

"Because someone submitted a request to change the beneficiary arrangements six months ago.""

My fingers went cold.

"Who submitted it?""

"I can't disclose every detail over the telephone.""

"Was it Vanessa?""

Another pause.

"Mr. Hayes, the signature on the request appears to be yours.""

I gripped the counter.

"That's impossible.""

"That's why we need to meet.""

I looked toward the stairs.

Maya was upstairs singing to her stuffed rabbit.

Someone had tried to change the arrangements for her future.

And according to the lawyer, they had used my name to do it.

That evening, I searched through the old files Claire had left behind.

There were insurance papers, property records, medical documents, and boxes of photographs.

I found her wedding album beneath a stack of envelopes.

Maya was only a baby in the first few pictures.

Claire was laughing in almost every photograph.

I turned another page.

A small handwritten note slipped out.

It was addressed to me.

Marcus, if anything ever happens to me, please promise you will never let anyone convince Maya that she has to earn her place in this family.

I sat on the bedroom floor for a long time.

Then I turned the paper over.

There was another sentence.

Especially not Eleanor or Vanessa.

My phone rang.

Vanessa.

I answered.

"What?""

"Mom told me she came to see you.""

"She did.""

"Good. Then you understand the situation.""

"What situation?""

"Marcus, stop pretending you don't know.""

"Explain it.""

She lowered her voice.

"That trust is family business. You shouldn't be digging into it.""

I looked at Claire's letter.

"Why are you so worried about me asking questions?""

"Because you're going to make a mess.""

"Did you submit a document using my signature?""

Silence.

Then Vanessa laughed.

"You're being paranoid.""

"Answer me.""

"Marcus, if you knew what Claire actually wanted, you wouldn't be asking these questions.""

My blood ran cold.

"What did Claire want?""

Vanessa didn't answer immediately.

Then she said something that made me stand up.

May you like

"Maybe you should ask why Claire never told you everything about Maya.""

The call disconnected.
