Chapter 3: The Signature That Wasn't Mine
I barely slept that night.
Every time I closed my eyes, I heard Vanessa's voice.
Ask why Claire never told you everything about Maya.
It was a cruel thing to say.
And because Vanessa knew exactly where to hurt me, I couldn't stop thinking about it.
At seven the next morning, I drove Maya to school.
She climbed out of the car with her lavender backpack and turned back before closing the door.
"Daddy?""
"Yes?""
"Will Grandma come to my school play next Friday?""
I looked at her through the open window.
"I don't know, sweetheart.""
"Okay.""
She smiled anyway.
"I'll save her a seat.""
Then she ran toward the entrance.
I watched until she disappeared inside.
My daughter still wanted a family that seemed determined to make her feel unwanted.
And I was beginning to realize that protecting her would require more than walking away from a wedding.
It would require finding out what my family had been hiding.
Harper and Collins occupied the fourth floor of a modern office building downtown.
Jonathan Collins was waiting when I arrived.
He was in his late fifties, with silver hair, a dark blue suit, and a thick folder already open on his desk.
"Mr. Hayes, thank you for coming.""
I shook his hand.
"Please tell me what's happening.""
He motioned toward a chair.
"Before we begin, I want to clarify that our firm represented your late wife's estate. We did not represent your mother or your sister.""
"Okay.""
"Claire established a protected trust for Maya. The initial value was approximately two million dollars, including investments and property interests.""
I nodded.
"She told me she had made arrangements for Maya. I never asked for details.""
"Your wife was very specific. She wanted you to remain Maya's primary guardian. She also appointed an independent professional trustee.""
"Who?""
"Mr. Robert Whitmore, a licensed financial trustee who has worked with our firm for over twenty years.""
"Then why is Vanessa involved?""
Jonathan opened the folder.
"She isn't officially involved.""
He slid a document toward me.
"This is a request submitted approximately six months ago.""
I looked down.
My name was printed at the top.
Marcus Daniel Hayes.
My address.
My date of birth.
And a signature that looked almost exactly like mine.
The request asked to appoint Vanessa as an additional financial administrator.
I read the document twice.
"I never signed this.""
"I believe you.""
"Who submitted it?""
Jonathan turned another page.
"The application was delivered through an intermediary. The accompanying authorization was witnessed by your mother.""
I stared at him.
"Eleanor?""
He nodded.
"She confirmed that she had personally witnessed your signature.""
My jaw tightened.
"She's lying.""
Jonathan didn't respond.
He simply placed another sheet in front of me.
It was an email.
The sender was Vanessa.
The recipient was my mother.
The date was six months earlier.
The subject line read: *Maya's Account.*
I began reading.
Mom, Marcus won't agree if we explain everything. He gets emotional whenever Claire's name comes up. We need to handle the paperwork before Maya gets older.
Below it, my mother's reply read:
I'll take care of the signature. Just make sure the arrangement protects the family.
I stopped reading.
My hands were trembling.
"What does 'protects the family' mean?""
Jonathan folded his hands.
"That's one of the questions we need to investigate.""
I looked at him.
"Did they take the money?""
"Not directly from the trust. The attempted administrative change was flagged before it was approved.""
I leaned back.
"Then what was Vanessa trying to do?""
Jonathan turned to the final page.
"There's another document.""
He pushed it across the desk.
This one was a property transfer request.
It listed a commercial building in downtown Boston.
I recognized the address immediately.
Claire had inherited that building from her father. It generated rental income from several businesses and was one of the largest assets connected to Maya's trust.
The proposed transfer would move ownership into a company called Vantage Holdings.
I read the listed company director.
Vanessa Hayes.
"She was trying to take the building?""
Jonathan corrected me carefully.
"She was attempting to transfer control of an asset connected to the trust. We don't yet know the full purpose.""
I looked up.
"How much is it worth?""
"Approximately four million dollars.""
I felt sick.
"Why would she need to control something that belongs to my daughter?""
Jonathan closed the folder.
"That's what we need to establish.""
Then he leaned forward.
"Mr. Hayes, there's something else. Your wife left specific instructions regarding what should happen if anyone attempted to interfere with Maya's inheritance.""
I looked at him.
"What instructions?""
He reached into a locked drawer and removed a sealed envelope.
The front had Claire's handwriting.
*For Marcus. Only if someone tries to take Maya's future away from her.*
I recognized the handwriting immediately.
My throat tightened.
"How long have you had that?""
"Since the estate was finalized.""
"Why didn't you give it to me earlier?""
"Because Claire specifically instructed us not to release it unless certain conditions were met.""
He placed the envelope between us.
"Those conditions have now been met.""
I stared at it.
For four years, I had believed Claire had left behind a simple inheritance and a few memories.
Apparently, she had left behind something else.
A warning.
I drove home with the envelope on the passenger seat.
I didn't open it immediately.
Instead, I sat in the driveway for several minutes, staring at the house.
Maya's pink bicycle was lying on the lawn.
Her small sneakers were beside the front door.
A drawing she had made for Claire was still taped to the refrigerator.
Everything looked ordinary.
But nothing felt ordinary anymore.
I finally opened the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter and a small USB drive.
The letter began:
My darling Marcus,
If you're reading this, someone has tried to interfere with Maya's inheritance. I hope I'm wrong about who it will be.
I stopped.
Then continued.
I know you love your mother. I know you've spent your entire life trying to keep Vanessa happy. But there is something I discovered before Maya was born.
My heart began pounding.
Your mother and Vanessa have never accepted Maya as fully part of this family. Their reasons are not what you think.
I read the next paragraph.
When I discovered what they were planning, I made a recording. I never confronted them because I needed to protect Maya first.
I looked at the USB drive.
Then back at the letter.
Marcus, if they ever make Maya feel that she doesn't belong, remember this: they know something about her birth that they have hidden from you.
I stopped breathing.
The final sentence was written in darker ink.
And the man who helped me uncover it is still alive.
I heard the front door open.
"Daddy?""
Maya stood in the doorway holding her schoolbag.
I quickly folded the letter.
"Hey, sweetheart. How was school?""
She walked toward me.
"Good. We made family trees today.""
I forced a smile.
"That sounds fun.""
She reached into her backpack and pulled out a sheet of paper.
There were little drawings of people connected by colored lines.
At the top was my name.
Beside it was Claire's.
And underneath was Maya's.
She pointed to the drawing.
"Mrs. Parker said we should include everyone important.""
I smiled.
"You did a beautiful job.""
Maya hesitated.
Then she pointed toward an empty space on the paper.
"I didn't know where to put Grandma and Aunt Vanessa.""
I looked at her.
"Why not?""
"Because I didn't know if they wanted to be in my family tree.""
I pulled her into my arms.
"Sweetheart, that's not something you have to worry about.""
She rested her head against my shoulder.
Then her voice became very small.
"Daddy, can I ask you something?""
"Anything.""
"Am I really your daughter?""
The world seemed to stop.
I pulled back and looked directly into her eyes.
"Of course you are. Nothing will ever change that.""
"But Aunt Vanessa said something at the wedding.""
My stomach tightened.
"What did she say?""
Maya looked down.
"She told Grandma that maybe I shouldn't have been invited in the first place because I wasn't really—"
She stopped.
I gently touched her cheek.
"Because you weren't really what, baby?""
Maya swallowed.
"Because I wasn't really a Hayes.""
For a moment, I couldn't move.
Then I heard my phone vibrating on the dashboard.
An unknown number.
I answered.
"Hello?""
A man's voice came through.
"Marcus Hayes?""
"Yes. Who is this?""
"My name is Robert Whitmore. I was Claire's financial trustee.""
I glanced at the USB drive.
"Mr. Collins gave me your number.""
"I know. He told me you received Claire's letter.""
"Then you know what's happening.""
There was a long pause.
"Marcus, I need you to listen carefully. Claire asked me to contact you if her family ever tried to challenge Maya's place in your family.""
My grip tightened around the phone.
"Why?""
"Because your sister knows the truth about Maya's birth.""
I looked through the windshield.
Maya was standing beside the car, still holding her family tree.
"What truth?""
Robert lowered his voice.
"Marcus, before I tell you, there's something you need to understand.""
"What?""
"Claire didn't leave you because she was dying.""
I froze.
"What are you talking about?""
"She discovered that someone in your family had been making decisions about Maya before she was even born.""
My mouth went dry.
"Who?""
Robert paused.
Then he said the name I least expected.
"Your father.""
May you like
My father had been dead for eleven years.
And according to the letter in my hand, he had known something about my daughter long before I did.
