Chapter 4: The Secret My Father Took to His Grave

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

My father had been dead for eleven years.

He had never met Maya. He had never held her, never attended her birthday parties, never watched her take her first steps.

So how could he possibly have known something about her birth?

"Mr. Whitmore, I need you to explain what you just said.""

Robert sighed.

"I understand this is difficult, Marcus. But Claire specifically instructed me not to disclose certain information unless someone attempted to interfere with Maya's inheritance or question her place in the family.""

"Well, that's exactly what happened.""

"I know.""

"Then tell me everything.""

There was a pause.

"Not over the telephone. Can you meet me tomorrow morning?""

I glanced toward Maya.

She was sitting on the living room rug, carefully coloring the family tree she'd brought home from school.

"Tomorrow is too late.""

"Marcus, I don't want to tell you something without showing you the original documents.""

I closed my eyes.

"Fine. Nine o'clock.""

Before hanging up, Robert added something.

"One more thing. Don't confront your mother or sister yet.""

"Why?""

"Because I suspect they don't know how much Claire managed to preserve.""

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Then I looked at the USB drive sitting beside Claire's letter.

For four years, I had believed my wife died with a few secrets and a broken heart.

Now I was beginning to wonder whether she had spent her final months protecting our daughter from the people who were supposed to love her.

That evening, Maya and I made spaghetti.

She insisted on helping, although most of the sauce ended up on the counter.

"Daddy, you put too much salt.""

"Really? You're the chef now?""

"Yes.""

"Should I call a restaurant and tell them you're available?""

She giggled.

For a few minutes, the house felt normal again.

Then she became quiet.

"Is Aunt Vanessa coming over?""

I stirred the sauce.

"Not tonight.""

"Is Grandma coming?""

"Probably not.""

Maya nodded.

She carefully placed three plates on the table.

One for me.

One for herself.

And one extra.

I looked at it.

"Who's that for?""

She shrugged.

"Mommy.""

My throat tightened.

"That's sweet, sweetheart.""

"She used to sit with us, right?""

"Every night.""

Maya smiled.

"Then we should keep her chair.""

I sat down beside her.

And for the first time since Claire died, I felt angry enough to cry.

Not because I missed my wife.

I always missed her.

But because someone had made my little girl question whether she deserved a place at her own family's table.

At ten that night, I finally connected the USB drive to my laptop.

A folder appeared.

Inside were four audio files, three scanned documents, and a video labeled:

*MARCUS — WATCH ONLY WHEN YOU KNOW THE TRUTH.*

I hesitated before clicking it.

Claire appeared on the screen.

She was sitting in our old living room, wearing the gray sweater I had bought her for Christmas.

Her hair was tied back.

She looked tired.

But she was smiling.

"Hi, sweetheart.""

I covered my mouth.

For a moment, I couldn't breathe.

"Marcus, if you're watching this, something happened that I desperately hoped would never happen.""

She looked down at her hands.

"I need you to know that I loved you. I loved Maya. And I never intended to keep secrets from you.""

She took a breath.

"Your father came to see me shortly before he died. He told me something about Eleanor and Vanessa. Something he had discovered years earlier.""

My heart began pounding.

Claire continued.

"At first, I didn't believe him. I thought he was confused because of his medication. But then he showed me a document.""

She reached toward the camera.

"I made copies. They're in the second folder.""

I paused the video.

The second folder contained a scanned hospital record.

The date was eleven years earlier.

My father's final hospitalization.

I opened the next document.

It was a private laboratory report.

The words at the top made my stomach turn.

*PATERNITY INVESTIGATION — CONFIDENTIAL.*

There were three names.

My father's.

Vanessa's.

And a man named Thomas Reed.

I didn't understand.

I opened another page.

The report contained a genetic comparison between my father and Vanessa.

The result was unmistakable.

My father was not Vanessa's biological father.

I leaned back.

The room seemed to tilt.

Vanessa was adopted.

And apparently, my father had known.

But why would that have anything to do with Maya?

I returned to Claire's video.

She was speaking again.

"Marcus, there's one more thing. Thomas Reed was not just a name on a document. He was someone Eleanor knew long before she met your father.""

Claire looked directly into the camera.

"And according to the records your father found, Vanessa was not the only person Eleanor had lied to.""

The video ended.

I sat in silence.

Then another notification appeared.

A message from Robert Whitmore.

*Robert:* I reviewed the documents Jonathan sent me. There is something urgent you need to know before tomorrow's meeting.

A second message followed.

*Robert:* Your father left a separate sealed statement. It concerns Maya directly.

Before I could reply, my phone rang.

Vanessa.

I stared at her name for several seconds before answering.

"What?""

Her voice was sharp.

"Have you been talking to Robert Whitmore?""

My blood ran cold.

"How do you know his name?""

"That's not important.""

"It is to me.""

"Marcus, listen carefully. You need to stop digging into things that happened before Maya was born.""

I looked at the paused image of Claire on my laptop.

"Why are you afraid of the past?""

"I'm not afraid of anything.""

"Then tell me who Thomas Reed is.""

Silence.

For the first time in my life, I heard my sister struggle to find words.

Then she whispered:

"Where did you get that name?""

I smiled without humor.

"That's what I thought.""

She suddenly raised her voice.

"Marcus, whatever Claire told you, she was wrong!""

I leaned forward.

"Then why are you so frightened?""

Vanessa hung up.

I looked at the clock.

It was 10:47 p.m.

May you like

Tomorrow morning, I would meet the man who had helped Claire uncover the truth.

And I was beginning to suspect that the wedding incident had been the smallest part of what my family had done.
