Chapter 9 - The Man Behind Every Lie

I kept the phone against my ear long after Robert ended the call.

Nobody spoke.

Not Claire.

Not Olivia.

Not Emily.

The silence was unbearable.

Because for the first time, I realized something I should have understood from the beginning.

A secret this big could not survive because of one person.

It survived because people helped protect it.

People helped hide it.

People helped me believe a lie.

And one of those people had been standing beside me pretending to help.

Robert.

The man I trusted with my family.

The man I called when my world collapsed.

The man who had promised to find the truth.

I looked at Claire.

“Tell me everything.”

She sat down slowly.

For the first time since I met her, she looked defeated.

Not like a villain caught in a lie.

Like someone who knew the damage could never be repaired.

“Robert was the one who helped me.”

My hands tightened.

“Helped you do what?”

She looked at Emily.

Then Olivia.

“Separate everyone who could expose me.”

My heart sank.

“How?”

Claire took a deep breath.

“After Thomas died, I knew Sarah would come after me.”

“Because she knew about Olivia?”

“Yes.”

“Because she knew about the money?”

“Yes.”

“And Robert helped you?”

She nodded.

“He handled the paperwork.”

My voice became colder.

“What paperwork?”

“The custody documents.”

I felt sick.

“He changed them?”

Claire looked away.

“He made sure Sarah looked unstable.”

The room became silent.

All those years.

All those court records.

All those things I believed.

A lie.

A carefully created lie.

“But why?”

Claire whispered:

“Because Robert needed something from me.”

“What?”

She hesitated.

Then said:

“He was involved with Thomas’s business.”

My eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?”

Before Claire could answer…

The front door opened.

Everyone froze.

A familiar voice came from the hallway.

“Because I was the reason Thomas had to disappear.”

My blood turned cold.

Robert walked into the house.

Calm.

Confident.

Like he owned the place.

Emily immediately moved closer to me.

Olivia grabbed her hand.

I stared at him.

“How long?”

Robert smiled.

“Long enough.”

“You lied to me.”

“No.”

He walked closer.

“I guided you.”

Anger rushed through me.

“You destroyed my family.”

He shook his head.

“Your family was already fragile.”

I stepped forward.

“Don’t.”

Robert looked at Emily.

“Do you know how easy it was?”

My stomach tightened.

“What?”

“To control what people believed.”

He laughed softly.

“Michael, you were always looking for the best in people.”

“And you used that.”

“Yes.”

The honesty was disgusting.

I had trusted him because I thought he was helping me.

But he was just another person manipulating the situation.

“Why?”

Robert looked around the mansion.

“This.”

He spread his arms.

“The money.”

“The property.”

“The company.”

I stared at him.

“You wanted my life?”

“No.”

He smiled.

“I wanted what was supposed to be yours.”

That sentence made no sense.

Until he continued.

“Thomas discovered something years ago.”

“What?”

Robert looked at Claire.

“She was not the only person hiding money.”

Claire looked shocked.

“What?”

Robert smiled.

“You thought you were protecting yourself.”

He looked at me.

“But Thomas discovered the truth about my company.”

My face changed.

“What company?”

Robert stepped closer.

“Your company.”

The room became silent.

I felt confused.

“What are you talking about?”

He smiled.

“Your business partner before you became successful.”

My mind raced.

Years ago…

Before my company grew.

Before I met Claire.

There had been an investor.

A man who disappeared after a financial dispute.

Robert.

No.

It couldn’t be.

“You were involved?”

“Yes.”

My breathing changed.

“And Thomas found out.”

Robert nodded.

“He threatened to expose everything.”

“So you killed him?”

The room became completely silent.

Robert’s smile disappeared.

“I didn’t say that.”

But he didn’t deny it.

And that was enough.

Olivia started crying.

“You lied.”

Robert looked at her.

“You were a child.”

“I remember!”

Her voice shook.

“I remember you being there that night.”

Robert froze.

I looked at Olivia.

“What?”

She wiped her tears.

“He came to the house.”

She pointed at Robert.

“He argued with Daddy.”

My heart stopped.

“You saw him?”

She nodded.

“He told Daddy he needed to sign papers.”

Robert’s expression changed.

For the first time…

He looked nervous.

I took out my phone.

“I recorded everything.”

Everyone looked at me.

I had activated the recording before Robert entered.

His confession.

His words.

Everything.

Robert realized it.

“You think that will save you?”

“No.”

I looked at Claire.

“It will save my daughters.”

The word surprised everyone.

My daughters.

Emily looked at me.

Olivia looked at me.

And for the first time…

Both girls smiled.

Because they finally heard what they had needed to hear.

They belonged.

They were loved.

They were family.

Robert stepped backward.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.”

I looked at him.

“I understand perfectly.”

Then I opened the front door.

Behind it…

Were police officers.

Robert’s face changed.

Because I had called them before he arrived.

He was taken away.

But before he left, he looked at Claire.

And said:

“You should have kept quiet.”

Claire closed her eyes.

May you like

Because she knew.

The final secret was about to come out.
