Chapter 5 - The DNA Test That Changed Everything

For several seconds, nobody moved.
The kitchen felt smaller.
The air felt heavier.
I looked at Claire standing across from me, holding those documents like she had just revealed a weapon.
A normal person would have been afraid.
But what I felt wasn’t fear.
It was confusion.
Because after everything I had discovered about her…
I no longer knew what was real.
“You’re lying.”
The words came out before I even realized I had spoken.
Claire smiled.
A small, confident smile.
“That’s what you said about Sarah too.”
My jaw tightened.
“Don’t bring her into this.”
“Why?”
Claire placed the folder on the table.
“Because she’s the reason you’re confused.”
I looked down at the papers.
“Open them.”
I didn’t move.
“Why would I believe anything you show me?”
“Because unlike Sarah, I’m not hiding from the truth.”
I almost laughed.
After everything she had done, hearing those words felt unbelievable.
But then Emily spoke.
Quietly.
“Daddy…”
I turned.
She was standing there, holding her arms around herself.
“Can we leave?”
That question broke something inside me.
My daughter wasn’t asking me to win an argument.
She wasn’t asking me to punish Claire.
She just wanted to feel safe.
I walked toward her.
“Yes.”
Claire immediately stepped forward.
“You’re taking her?”
I looked at her.
“Yes.”
“You can’t.”
My expression changed.
“Excuse me?”
Claire’s voice became sharper.
“You don’t know the whole story.”
“I know enough.”
“No, you don’t.”
She pointed toward the folder.
“You think you’re saving Emily, but you don’t even know who you’re protecting.”
I looked at the documents again.
A part of me wanted to ignore them.
Walk away.
Take Emily somewhere safe.
Call a lawyer.
End everything.
But another part of me…
The part that had spent years loving my daughter…
Needed answers.
I picked up the folder.
“Fine.”
Claire smiled.
“Good.”
“But Emily comes with me.”
Her smile disappeared.
For the first time, she looked truly angry.
“That child belongs here.”
I froze.
There it was again.
Not love.
Not concern.
Ownership.
“She belongs with her father.”
Claire stared at me.
Then whispered:
“Do you really know if you’re her father?”
The words hit me like a physical blow.
I looked at Emily.
She didn’t understand.
She was only eight.
She didn’t understand why adults kept talking about her like she was a secret.
Like she was a problem to solve.
I grabbed my coat.
“Get your things, sweetheart.”
Emily nodded.
As she walked upstairs, I opened the folder.
The first document was a DNA report.
My heart started beating faster.
I read the names.
Michael Anderson.
Emily Anderson.
The date.
Five years ago.
My hands trembled.
But then I noticed something.
The report wasn’t from a hospital I recognized.
It was from a private clinic.
I looked at Claire.
“What is this?”
She crossed her arms.
“A DNA test.”
“Why did you do a DNA test?”
Her eyes moved away.
That tiny hesitation told me everything.
“You knew about this?”
“Yes.”
“Before today?”
“Yes.”
My anger returned.
“You had a DNA test done on my daughter and never told me?”
Claire didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
I continued reading.
The result section was partially covered.
I looked closer.
Someone had blacked out part of the page.
“Why is this hidden?”
Claire said nothing.
I looked up.
“Claire.”
Still nothing.
Then I heard footsteps.
Emily came downstairs carrying a small backpack.
She looked at the tension in the room.
“Daddy?”
I immediately closed the folder.
“It’s okay.”
But it wasn’t.
Nothing was okay anymore.
I took Emily to my brother’s house.
I didn’t trust a hotel.
I didn’t trust anyone connected to Claire.
My brother David opened the door and immediately knew something was wrong.
“What happened?”
I looked at Emily.
“Can we talk later?”
He nodded.
That night, after Emily finally fell asleep, I sat in the guest room with the documents.
I called a private attorney.
A friend I trusted.
His name was Robert.
He arrived an hour later.
I handed him everything.
He read silently.
Then looked up.
“Michael…”
“What?”
“You need to be prepared.”
“For what?”
He placed the DNA report down.
“This document was altered.”
My stomach dropped.
“What?”
“The formatting is wrong. The signature section is incomplete. Someone changed this.”
I stared at the paper.
“So Claire lied?”
“Possibly.”
“About me being Emily’s father?”
Robert shook his head.
“I don’t know yet.”
That answer scared me more than anything.
Because uncertainty was worse.
I could handle betrayal.
I could handle anger.
But not knowing the truth about my daughter…
That destroyed me.
The next morning, Robert arranged a real DNA test.
No private clinic.
No hidden paperwork.
No secrets.
Just the truth.
Emily sat beside me in the waiting room.
She held my hand.
“Daddy?”
“Yes?”
“Are you going to send me away?”
My heart broke.
“What?”
She looked down.
“Claire said sometimes people stop loving you when they find out things.”
I pulled her into my arms.
“Emily.”
She looked at me.
“There is nothing in this world that could make me stop loving you.”
She hugged me tightly.
But I noticed something.
She was still afraid.
That fear didn’t disappear overnight.
Because Claire hadn’t just hurt her.
She had changed the way my daughter saw herself.
Two days later, the results arrived.
I opened the envelope with shaking hands.
Robert was sitting across from me.
“Whatever this says,” he told me, “remember one thing.”
“What?”
“You are still her father.”
I nodded.
Then I opened it.
I read the first line.
And my entire body went numb.
The test confirmed something I never expected.
Emily was not biologically related to me.
I stopped breathing.
The room became silent.
Robert looked at me carefully.
“Michael…”
I couldn’t speak.
Eight years.
Eight years I had loved this child.
Raised her.
Held her.
Protected her.
And now a piece of paper was telling me something I never imagined.
Emily wasn’t my biological daughter.
But then I looked at the next page.
There was another note attached.
A laboratory correction.
A second test.
A warning.
I read it slowly.
Then my hands started shaking.
Because the first DNA test…
The one Claire showed me…
Was fake.
And the real results revealed something even more shocking.
The name listed under biological father…
Was not another man.
It was mine.
My DNA matched Emily.
The first test had been manipulated.
Someone had tried to convince me I wasn’t her father.
And only one person had access to that fake report.
Claire.
But why?
Why would she create a lie proving I wasn’t Emily’s father…
When the truth proved I was?
Then Robert pointed to another line.
A line I had missed.
“Michael…”
I looked at him.
“The sample date.”
“What about it?”
He swallowed.
“The DNA sample used for the fake report wasn’t from Emily.”
My eyebrows tightened.
“What?”
He looked at me.
“It belonged to another child.”
The room went cold.
Another child.
Someone else’s DNA.
Someone Claire had access to.
Someone connected to this entire mystery.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A man’s voice spoke.
“Mr. Anderson.”
“Who is this?”
“You’re looking for the truth about Claire.”
My grip tightened.
“Who are you?”
A pause.
Then:
“The child Claire has been hiding from you…”
My heart stopped.
“She’s not the only one.”
The call ended.
I looked at Robert.
And for the first time, I understood.
Claire’s secret wasn’t just about my daughter.
It was about a child she had hidden.
A child nobody knew existed.
May you like
And somehow…
That child was the reason my family had been destroyed.
