Chapter 6 - The Child Claire Tried To Erase

I stayed frozen after the call ended.
The phone was still pressed against my ear.
But there was no sound anymore.
Only silence.
A silence that felt heavier than any accusation.
Because I finally understood something.
Claire had never been trying to hide one secret.
She had been hiding an entire life.
A life she had carefully removed from my world.
A life she thought I would never discover.
Robert watched me closely.
“Michael, what did he say?”
I slowly lowered the phone.
“He said Claire hid another child.”
Robert’s expression changed.
“Another child?”
I nodded.
“And he said that child was the reason everything happened.”
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Robert leaned forward.
“Who was the caller?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did he identify himself?”
“No.”
Robert sighed.
“That makes this more complicated.”
I looked at the DNA documents scattered across the table.
“No.”
I shook my head.
“It makes it clearer.”
Robert looked at me.
“How?”
“Because Claire has been controlling information for years.”
I pointed at the papers.
“She controlled what I knew about Sarah.”
“She controlled what Emily believed about her own mother.”
“She controlled what I believed about my own daughter.”
I looked toward the hallway where Emily was sleeping.
“And now I’m finding out she controlled an entire child’s existence.”
My voice became colder.
“I need to know who that child is.”
The first thing we did was investigate Claire’s past.
Not the version she told me.
The real version.
Robert hired a private investigator.
His name was Daniel Brooks.
He had worked on difficult family cases for years.
When he arrived at my brother’s house, he placed a thick file on the table.
“Mr. Anderson, your wife is not who she claims to be.”
I already knew that.
But hearing it from someone else still hurt.
“What did you find?”
Daniel opened the file.
“Claire was married before.”
I looked at him.
“What?”
He nodded.
“Seven years before she met you.”
My stomach tightened.
“Why didn’t I know?”
“Because the marriage records were sealed.”
“Sealed?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Daniel hesitated.
“That’s where things get interesting.”
He removed several documents.
“Her first husband was named Thomas Reed.”
The name meant nothing to me.
“What happened to him?”
Daniel looked down.
“He died.”
The room became quiet.
“How?”
“Officially? A car accident.”
“And unofficially?”
Daniel looked at me.
“There were questions.”
I felt a chill.
“What kind of questions?”
“Financial problems. Insurance policies. Disputes before his death.”
I leaned back.
My mind was racing.
Claire had a dead husband.
A hidden child.
A fake DNA report.
And years of lies.
“What about the child?”
Daniel opened another page.
“Thomas and Claire had a daughter.”
My heart started beating faster.
“What was her name?”
“Olivia Reed.”
“How old?”
“She would be nine now.”
Nine.
Emily was eight.
Close enough.
“Where is she?”
Daniel looked at me.
“That’s the problem.”
“What do you mean?”
“She disappeared.”
My hands tightened.
“Disappeared?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Shortly after Thomas died.”
I stared at him.
“And nobody searched?”
“They did.”
“Then why wasn’t she found?”
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“Because Claire claimed the child was placed with relatives.”
“Was she?”
“No evidence supports that.”
I stood up.
“So Claire lied again.”
Daniel didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
The pattern was obvious.
Claire erased people when they became inconvenient.
Sarah.
Thomas.
Olivia.
And now she was trying to control Emily.
I walked outside.
The cold air hit my face.
I needed to breathe.
Because suddenly I remembered something.
Something small.
Something I ignored.
A moment from years ago.
Emily was five.
She had drawn a picture of our family.
I remembered smiling.
She had drawn herself.
Me.
And Claire.
But behind the house…
There was another little girl.
I had asked:
“Who is that?”
Emily had looked nervous.
Then Claire quickly answered:
“Oh, she just makes up imaginary friends.”
At the time, I laughed.
I thought it was cute.
But now…
I wondered.
What if she wasn’t imaginary?
I rushed back inside.
I found Emily’s old drawings.
A box I kept because I couldn’t throw away anything she made.
I searched through them.
Then I found it.
The picture.
The same one.
Four people.
Not three.
Emily.
Me.
Claire.
And another little girl.
I looked closer.
The little girl had blonde hair.
Just like Claire.
On the bottom, Emily had written something.
A name.
Olivia.
My heart stopped.
Emily knew.
My daughter knew about the child Claire was hiding.
But how?
That night, I waited until Emily woke up.
She was sitting on the couch beside me.
I held the drawing.
“Emily?”
She looked at it.
Her face changed.
“Where did you get that?”
“You drew it.”
She became quiet.
“Who is Olivia?”
Immediately, fear appeared in her eyes.
The same fear.
The same reaction.
My daughter knew something.
“Sweetheart, you’re not in trouble.”
She looked at me.
“Promise?”
“I promise.”
She hugged her knees.
Then whispered:
“She told me not to talk about her.”
“Who?”
“Claire.”
I felt anger rising.
“What did she tell you?”
Emily looked down.
“She said Olivia was bad.”
My heart sank.
“She said Olivia ruined everything.”
I took a deep breath.
“Emily, who is Olivia?”
My daughter’s eyes filled with tears.
“She was here before me.”
The room went silent.
“What do you mean?”
Emily whispered:
“She lived here.”
I froze.
“Here?”
She nodded.
“In our house.”
I looked around.
The mansion suddenly felt different.
Every hallway.
Every locked door.
Every room.
It felt like another child’s memories were trapped inside.
“Where did she go?”
Emily shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
“Did you meet her?”
A pause.
Then:
“Yes.”
My heart stopped.
“When?”
“Before you married Claire.”
I couldn’t move.
Emily looked at me.
“She told me she missed her daddy.”
I felt sick.
“Her daddy?”
Emily nodded.
“Thomas.”
The name hit me.
“She said Claire told everyone he was gone.”
I stared at my daughter.
“How did you know all this?”
Emily whispered:
“Because Olivia hid in the house.”
I leaned forward.
“What?”
“She was scared.”
My voice became softer.
“Scared of what?”
Emily started crying.
“Of Claire.”
Everything inside me went cold.
My daughter had been carrying this secret alone.
For years.
“Emily…”
She wiped her tears.
“Daddy, please don’t tell Claire I told you.”
“Why?”
“Because she said if anyone found Olivia…”
She stopped.
I held her hand.
“What?”
My daughter looked directly at me.
And said something I would never forget.
“She said Olivia would disappear forever.”
I felt my entire body go numb.
Because suddenly the truth became clear.
Claire wasn’t just hiding a child.
She was hiding what happened to her.
And if Emily had witnessed something years ago…
Then my daughter wasn’t just a victim.
She was the only person alive who knew the truth.
I stood up.
“I need to call the police.”
But before I could reach my phone…
The front door opened.
Everyone froze.
I turned around.
And standing there…
Was Claire.
She looked at Emily.
Then at me.
Then at the drawing in my hand.
Her face changed.
Not anger.
Not sadness.
Panic.
Real panic.
“You found it.”
My voice was cold.
“Found what?”
Claire slowly closed the door.
“The reason I had to keep Emily quiet.”
I stepped forward.
“Where is Olivia?”
For the first time…
My wife looked afraid.
Then she whispered:
“Michael…”
“You don’t understand what you’re asking.”
I stared at her.
“Where is the little girl?”
Claire’s eyes moved toward Emily.
And then she said the words that made my blood run cold.
“She’s been closer than you think.”
I felt my heart stop.
“What does that mean?”
Claire didn’t answer.
Instead, she looked at the staircase.
At the room upstairs.
The locked room.
Then she whispered:
“Because Olivia never left this house.”
And suddenly…
May you like
I realized the locked room wasn’t hiding old belongings.
It was hiding a child’s entire lost life.
