Chapter 12: The Woman Who Sold Us All
I drove to the hospital where Vanessa had been treated.
Morgan followed in a federal vehicle.
Emily sat beside me, clutching the blue box.
Nobody spoke during the journey.
When we arrived, the nurse confirmed that Vanessa had been transferred.
But something didn't make sense.
Her medical chart showed that she had never been discharged.
Someone had removed her under a false identity.
Morgan immediately contacted her team.
"Lock down every exit. Get me the security footage from the last hour.""
A technician brought us into a small monitoring room.
The footage showed a woman entering Vanessa's room at 10:42 a.m.
She wore a nurse's uniform and a surgical mask.
Twenty minutes later, the same woman left pushing a wheelchair.
Vanessa was sitting inside.
Her face was turned away from the camera.
I leaned closer.
"Can you zoom in?""
The technician enlarged the image.
The woman pushing the wheelchair wore a silver bracelet.
A bracelet with a small red devil charm.
I recognized it.
Vanessa had worn it at the Halloween party.
"She wasn't taken," I whispered.
Morgan looked at me.
"What?""
"She left willingly.""
Emily shook her head.
"Or someone made her.""
I stared at the screen.
Then I noticed something else.
Vanessa had placed her left hand on the wheelchair arm.
Her fingers were moving.
Three taps.
Pause.
Three taps.
Pause.
Three taps.
I remembered something from months earlier.
Vanessa had once told me that her younger brother used a simple tapping pattern to signal distress when they were children.
Three short taps meant one thing.
I'm being watched.
I pointed at the screen.
"She's sending a message.""
Morgan leaned closer.
"Can you interpret it?""
I nodded.
"She's not free.""
Morgan immediately ordered the hospital exits sealed.
But it was too late.
The woman had already left through the underground parking garage.
We watched the remaining footage.
A black van was waiting.
The wheelchair disappeared inside.
The vehicle drove away.
Morgan turned to her agents.
"Find that van.""
Then she looked at me.
"Do you know where Vanessa's family lives?""
I shook my head.
"She never talked about them.""
Emily opened the blue box.
"Maybe I do.""
She pulled out a folded piece of paper.
It was a photograph of a small house beside a lake.
On the back was an address.
I recognized the handwriting.
Vanessa's.
"Why would she keep this?"" I asked.
Emily examined the paper.
"Because it's not her family home.""
"Whose is it?""
She pointed to a name beneath the address.
*Daniel Reed.*
Vanessa's younger brother.
We drove there immediately.
The house stood at the end of a narrow road.
The garden was overgrown, and the windows were covered with curtains.
Morgan approached first.
She knocked.
No answer.
Then she noticed the front door was slightly open.
We entered carefully.
The living room was empty.
A photograph sat on the mantelpiece.
Vanessa stood beside a young man.
Daniel.
He had the same dark hair and sharp jawline.
I picked up the picture.
On the back, Vanessa had written:
For the only person who never asked me to be someone else.
Emily searched the kitchen.
"Marcus!""
She had found a small notebook inside a drawer.
It contained names, dates, and bank transfers.
One name appeared repeatedly.
Eleanor Carter.
Another appeared beside it.
Vanessa Reed.
I felt sick.
Morgan took the notebook.
"This is evidence.""
Then Emily noticed something beneath the table.
A phone.
Its screen was cracked, but it still worked.
There was one saved recording.
I pressed PLAY.
Vanessa's voice filled the room.
"Daniel, if you're hearing this, I couldn't get you out.""
A man's voice answered.
"You promised.""
"I know.""
"You said Eleanor would leave us alone.""
"I thought she would.""
Vanessa began crying.
"She has the original documents. She has everything.""
Daniel's voice became angry.
"You should have gone to the police.""
"I couldn't. She would have destroyed you.""
A door slammed in the recording.
Then Eleanor's voice appeared.
"Vanessa, darling. Are you finished?""
The recording ended.
I stared at the phone.
Morgan replayed the final seconds.
Then she froze the audio.
"Did you hear that?""
I listened again.
Behind Eleanor's voice was another sound.
A child crying.
I looked at Emily.
"Who is that?""
She shook her head.
"I don't know.""
Morgan examined the notebook.
Then she found a photograph tucked into the back cover.
It showed Vanessa standing outside St. Agnes.
Beside her was a little girl.
The child wore a red coat.
Emily went pale.
"No.""
I turned toward her.
"What?""
She took the photograph.
"That's me.""
I looked again.
The girl was younger, perhaps eight years old.
But Emily had been five when she disappeared.
"Where was this taken?""
"St. Agnes. I remember that hallway.""
Morgan looked at the date.
It was eleven years old.
"Vanessa knew you were there?""
Emily nodded slowly.
"She was the nurse who brought me food.""
I stared at the photograph.
Vanessa had known Emily long before she met me.
She hadn't simply been hired to monitor me.
She had been part of the operation that kept my sister hidden.
"Why would she help Emily?"" I asked.
Emily looked down.
"Because she was trying to help me escape.""
I shook my head.
"But she worked for Eleanor.""
"Both things can be true.""
Morgan placed the photograph inside an evidence bag.
"We need to find her.""
My phone rang.
An unknown number.
I answered.
"Marcus.""
Vanessa's voice.
I nearly dropped the phone.
"Where are you?""
"Don't ask.""
"Are you hurt?""
"I'm alive.""
"Who has you?""
She breathed shakily.
"Your mother.""
I looked at Morgan.
She signaled for me to keep her talking.
"Why did you leave the hospital?""
"Because Eleanor threatened Daniel.""
"Where is he?""
A pause.
Then Vanessa whispered:
"He's with me.""
My chest tightened.
"Is he safe?""
"Not anymore.""
I heard a door open.
Then Eleanor's voice.
"Give me the phone, Vanessa.""
Vanessa began speaking quickly.
"Marcus, listen. The blue box isn't the only thing I hid. There's a second recording. It proves who ordered your father's poisoning.""
"Where?""
"Inside Daniel's old music box.""
"Where is the music box?""
"At my apartment. Under the—"
A sharp sound interrupted her.
Then Eleanor spoke.
"Hello, Marcus.""
I clenched my jaw.
"Let them go.""
"You're becoming very demanding.""
"Tell me what you want.""
"The original will. And the recording from your grandfather's clock.""
"You already have everything.""
"No, darling. I have almost everything.""
She laughed.
"There's one final document I need.""
"Which one?""
"The document proving that Emily is legally alive.""
I looked at my sister.
Eleanor continued.
"Without that document, Emily cannot claim her inheritance.""
Emily moved closer to the phone.
"You're not getting anything from me.""
Eleanor chuckled.
"Emily. Still so stubborn.""
Then she said something that made my sister's face collapse.
"Perhaps you should ask Marcus what happened to your real mother.""
Emily froze.
"What?""
I stared at the phone.
Eleanor's voice became softer.
"Grace Miller wasn't the woman who gave birth to you, sweetheart.""
Emily looked at me.
Then Eleanor delivered the final blow.
"Your biological mother is Vanessa Reed.""
The call ended.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
I looked at the photograph of Vanessa and Emily.
Then at my sister.
Emily slowly shook her head.
"No.""
Morgan lowered her phone.
"Marcus, we need to get to Vanessa's apartment.""
But Emily was already backing away.
"She's my mother?""
I tried to reach for her.
"Emily—"
She pulled away.
"All these years, I thought she was helping me because she felt sorry for me.""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"She knew who I was.""
I had no answer.
Then my phone received another message.
It contained a photograph of a wooden music box.
Beside it was a handwritten note.
*Come alone, Marcus. Bring the will.*
May you like
And beneath the message was one final sentence.
*If you want to know why Vanessa gave birth to Emily, ask Eleanor who paid for the hospital room where you were born.*
