Chapter 9: The Secret My Father Took to His Grave

We spent the night in a motel outside the city.

My father refused to sleep.

He sat beside the window, watching passing headlights.

Grace sat on the bed with the blue folder in her lap.

I stood near the bathroom, staring at the original will.

For years, I had believed I was the luckiest son in the world.

I had grown up in a mansion.

I attended private schools.

I inherited a successful business.

My mother had given me everything.

Now I understood that every gift had come with a price.

And every person I loved had been forced to pay it.

At 3:16 a.m., I finally asked the question Eleanor had left hanging between us.

"Why did you choose me instead of Emily?""

My father closed his eyes.

"Because I thought you were safer.""

"That's not an answer.""

He turned toward me.

"Emily was the rightful heir. Eleanor knew that. She believed that if Emily disappeared, she could control the inheritance through the trust.""

"And me?""

"You were never supposed to inherit anything.""

I stared at him.

"Then why did you let me believe I would?""

"Because I needed Eleanor to focus on you.""

I stepped backward.

"You used me?""

My father lowered his head.

"I thought I was protecting Emily.""

"By letting me become her replacement?""

He nodded.

I laughed bitterly.

"Unbelievable.""

Grace approached.

"Marcus, your father made terrible decisions, but he loved you.""

I turned toward her.

"And you? Did you love me enough to come back?""

She flinched.

"I tried.""

"When?""

"Several times.""

"Where were you?""

"Every time I got close, Eleanor threatened someone.""

I shook my head.

"That's what everyone says. Eleanor threatened this person, Eleanor threatened that person. Nobody ever thought about telling me the truth.""

Grace began crying.

"I know.""

I walked to the window.

Outside, the parking lot was empty.

Then my father spoke.

"There is one thing Eleanor doesn't know.""

I turned.

"What?""

He opened his jacket and removed a small brass key.

"Your grandfather left a second will.""

I stared at it.

"Another will?""

"Yes.""

"Where?""

"Inside the Carter family chapel.""

Grace looked alarmed.

"James, no.""

He ignored her.

"The second will was written before Eleanor married me. It contains the original inheritance arrangements.""

"Why didn't you give it to the lawyers?""

"Because Eleanor would have destroyed it.""

He placed the key on the table.

"Your grandfather knew she was dangerous long before I did.""

I picked up the key.

"What does the second will say?""

My father looked directly at me.

"It names the person who was supposed to inherit everything.""

"Emily?""

"No.""

He swallowed.

"You.""

I stared at him.

"What?""

"Your grandfather discovered Eleanor's financial fraud before she married me. He didn't trust her. He wanted the inheritance divided between his grandchildren, but he specifically protected your share from any claim made by Eleanor.""

I looked at Grace.

She nodded slowly.

"Your grandfather knew about me. He wanted both children protected.""

My father continued.

"But there was a condition. You and Emily had to be reunited before either of you could claim the inheritance.""

"Why?""

"Because he believed Eleanor would turn you against each other.""

I sat down.

For the first time, I understood why my mother had been so determined to keep Emily hidden.

If Emily returned, she wouldn't simply regain her inheritance.

She would expose the entire scheme.

And the two of us together could challenge Eleanor's control of the Carter estate.

At 8:40 a.m., we drove to the family chapel.

It stood behind the old Carter mansion, surrounded by trees and stone statues.

The chapel had been locked since my grandfather died.

I used the brass key.

The door opened.

Inside, dust covered the pews.

A stained-glass window showed two children holding hands beneath a golden sun.

My father pointed toward the altar.

"Your grandfather kept important documents beneath the floor.""

We moved the wooden panel.

Inside was a metal safe.

The key opened it.

There were several envelopes.

One was addressed to me.

Another was addressed to Emily.

The third had Eleanor's name on it.

I opened my grandfather's letter.

To my grandchildren,

If you are reading this together, then I hope I was wrong about the danger surrounding your family.

Your grandmother believed that wealth gave people power over others. I spent my life learning that the opposite is true.

Money only reveals what someone already is.

Emily, you were born into this family, but you must never believe that your name defines your worth.

Marcus, you were raised to believe that loyalty means obedience. It does not.

If either of you must choose between protecting this family's reputation and protecting the truth, choose the truth.

The Carter estate belongs to both of you.

But there is one condition.

Neither of you may inherit until the person who caused your father's death is brought to justice.

I stopped reading.

My father stood completely still.

"Grandfather knew?""

James nodded.

"He suspected Eleanor had arranged something.""

I looked at him.

"Then why didn't he go to the police?""

"Because he died before he could gather enough evidence.""

I examined the documents.

At the bottom of the envelope was a handwritten note.

*The original recording is inside the grandfather clock.*

I looked at my father.

"What recording?""

He shook his head.

"I don't know.""

We returned to the mansion.

The grandfather clock stood in the entrance hall.

It had been there since my childhood.

My mother had never allowed anyone to move it.

I opened the back panel.

Inside was a small black cassette recorder.

There was a label.

*ELEANOR CARTER — NOVEMBER 14, 2015.*

The date Emily disappeared.

I pressed PLAY.

A woman's voice emerged.

Eleanor.

"If anything happens to the child, James will take the blame.""

A man's voice answered.

"Are you sure?""

"Completely.""

"And the boy?""

"Marcus knows nothing. He'll never remember.""

I felt my blood turn cold.

Then another voice spoke.

A voice I recognized.

Dr. Hale.

"There's a problem.""

Eleanor sighed.

"What now?""

"Emily saw the injection.""

A pause.

Then my mother's voice became ice cold.

"Then she cannot stay.""

I stopped breathing.

The recording continued.

Dr. Hale asked, "What about James?""

Eleanor replied:

"He'll be next.""

My father sank into a chair.

I pressed STOP.

For several seconds, the mansion was silent.

Then I heard a soft sound behind us.

A floorboard creaked.

I turned.

A woman stood at the top of the staircase.

She wore a gray coat and held a small black handbag.

Her face was pale.

Her eyes were familiar.

Too familiar.

She looked at my father.

Then at me.

"James," she whispered.

My father stood.

"Grace?""

She shook her head.

"No.""

I stared at her.

The woman slowly removed her scarf.

A small crescent-shaped scar was visible behind her ear.

My father covered his mouth.

"Emily?""

She nodded.

"I'm sorry I took so long.""

I stepped toward her.

"You're alive.""

She looked at me.

Then her eyes moved to the cassette recorder.

"Did you listen to it?""

I nodded.

Emily began crying.

"Then you know why I disappeared.""

I reached for her.

But she stepped backward.

"Marcus, there's something else.""

"What?""

She looked toward the mansion's front door.

A black car had just pulled into the driveway.

Eleanor stepped out.

But she wasn't alone.

A police officer followed her.

Emily grabbed my hand.

"She knows I'm here.""

My father moved toward the staircase.

"We need to get you somewhere safe.""

Emily shook her head.

"No. You don't understand.""

She pulled a folded document from her coat.

It was a medical report.

The date was three days earlier.

The patient name was James Carter.

My father's name.

I took it from her.

The diagnosis was written in bold letters.

*SEVERE TOXIC EXPOSURE — LONG-TERM ORGAN DAMAGE.*

I looked at my father.

He was already struggling to breathe.

Emily's voice trembled.

"She has been poisoning him again.""

Then someone knocked on the front door.

Three times.

And Eleanor's voice rang through the mansion.

"Open the door, Marcus. I have a warrant for your arrest.""

I looked down at the medical report.

At the bottom was the name of the doctor who had prescribed my father's medication.

Dr. Richard Hale.

May you like

But the signature was dated yesterday.

*The day after Dr. Hale was found dead.*
