Chapter 2: The Contract Behind the Lie

The sound of Alexander Vale’s phone hitting the marble floor echoed louder than the whispers around us.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Not the guests.

Not the musicians.

Not even Vanessa.

Everyone was trapped inside the same impossible moment, trying to understand what they had just heard.

The child was never supposed to be his.

Those words hung in the air like smoke.

Alexander stared at the shattered phone screen on the floor.

His face had lost all color.

“Play it again,” he said.

Nobody answered.

“Play it again!””

His voice cracked through the ballroom.

A waiter flinched.

Someone near the entrance whispered, “This can’t be real.””

Vanessa stepped forward slowly.

“Alexander, please.””

He looked at her.

I had never seen that expression on his face before.

Not rage.

Not heartbreak.

Something deeper.

Betrayal.

“Please what?”” he asked.

Vanessa’s lips trembled.

“I can explain everything.””

“No,” Alexander said quietly.

“You can explain nothing.””

She reached for his arm.

He moved away before she could touch him.

That small movement said more than any argument could.

The woman who had entered the ballroom as his bride was now a stranger standing in front of him.

Marcus was still near the bar.

Unlike everyone else, he hadn’t moved.

That was the part that terrified me.

The entire room was falling apart, but Marcus looked almost relaxed.

Like he had expected this.

Like he had been waiting.

I grabbed Lily’s hand tighter.

“Stay beside me,” I whispered.

She nodded.

But her eyes never left Marcus.

Children noticed things adults ignored.

That had always been Lily’s gift.

She watched people.

Their hands.

Their faces.

Their pauses before they answered.

She once told me, “Mommy, people’s mouths lie, but their eyes forget.””

I never imagined that ability would save us from something like this.

Alexander looked toward Marcus.

“Come here.””

The room became silent again.

Marcus lifted his glass.

Then he smiled.

A slow, confident smile.

“Alexander.””

“Come here.””

Marcus placed the glass down and walked across the ballroom.

Every step he took felt deliberate.

When he reached his brother, he looked around at the guests.

“I think everyone deserves some privacy.””

Alexander laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“Privacy?””

He pointed toward the phone.

“You planned to steal my company.””

Marcus sighed.

“That’s a dramatic way to describe a business transition.””

A few guests gasped.

I felt my stomach twist.

He wasn’t denying it.

Not really.

Alexander stepped closer.

“You used Vanessa.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

Then back at his brother.

“No.””

His answer came instantly.

“We used each other.””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“Marcus.””

The warning in her voice was obvious.

But Marcus ignored her.

And suddenly I understood something.

Vanessa wasn’t the mastermind.

She was part of the plan.

Maybe an important part.

But not the one in control.

Alexander looked at her.

“Was any of it real?””

Vanessa blinked.

“What?””

“The relationship.””

His voice became quieter.

“The wedding.””

A pause.

“The baby.””

The last word seemed to hurt him the most.

Vanessa looked away.

That was her answer.

Alexander closed his eyes.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

The moment when someone’s entire future collapses inside their mind.

Because Alexander had spent months preparing for this child.

He had bought a nursery.

He had chosen a name.

He had changed parts of his company’s inheritance plan because he believed he was becoming a father.

And now he was standing in front of everyone, realizing the child he dreamed of never existed.

Then Marcus said something that made the room freeze.

“You should be thanking me.””

Alexander opened his eyes.

“What?””

Marcus smiled.

“You were going to destroy everything yourself.””

A wave of confusion moved through the crowd.

Alexander stared at him.

“What are you talking about?””

Marcus walked closer.

“You really think Vanessa’s pregnancy was the only secret tonight?””

My skin went cold.

Alexander’s expression changed.

“What secret?””

Marcus looked at me.

Then at Lily.

Then back at Alexander.

“That’s the problem with you. You always believed you were the smartest person in every room.””

“Answer me.””

Marcus smiled.

“You never asked why your first marriage ended.””

My heart stopped.

The ballroom disappeared for a second.

Because everyone knew what he was talking about.

Me.

My marriage to Alexander had ended three years earlier.

Not because we hated each other.

Not because there was no love.

Because Alexander had chosen his empire over our family.

At least, that was what I thought.

I looked at him.

He looked confused.

“What does she have to do with this?””

Marcus laughed softly.

“Oh, Alexander.””

He shook his head.

“You still don’t know.””

I stepped forward.

“Stop speaking in riddles.””

Marcus looked at me.

For the first time that night, his smile disappeared.

“You want the truth?””

I said nothing.

“Fine.””

He reached inside his jacket.

Several guests backed away.

But instead of a weapon, he pulled out a thin brown envelope.

He held it up.

“This is the reason Vanessa had to pretend she was pregnant.””

Alexander stared at the envelope.

“What is that?””

Marcus walked slowly around him.

“A contract.””

“What contract?””

“The original inheritance agreement.””

Alexander frowned.

“I know my inheritance agreements.””

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You know the version you were allowed to see.””

The room erupted again.

Someone shouted, “What does that mean?””

Marcus ignored them.

He opened the envelope.

Inside was a stack of papers.

“I found this hidden in our father’s private files.””

Alexander’s expression hardened.

“My father died six years ago.””

“Yes.””

“And you waited until now?””

Marcus smiled.

“Because timing matters.””

He looked around the ballroom.

“Tonight was perfect.””

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“Marcus, don’t.””

But he continued.

“Alexander was supposed to inherit everything.””

He looked at his brother.

“Until our father added one condition.””

Alexander stared.

“What condition?””

Marcus held up the document.

“If Alexander Vale ever had a biological child, control of the company would remain with him and his descendants.””

A few guests nodded.

“That’s the clause,” someone whispered.

The same clause from the video.

Marcus continued.

“But if Alexander had no biological heir, control would transfer to the next eligible Vale family member.””

Nobody spoke.

Alexander’s face slowly changed.

“Marcus.””

“Yes.””

“You’re next.””

Marcus smiled.

Finally.

The truth was out.

He had not wanted Alexander’s money.

He wanted Alexander’s throne.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“You’re making it sound worse than it is.””

Alexander looked at her.

“Why?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I was scared.””

“Scared of what?””

She looked down.

“For years, Marcus told me that if I didn’t help him, I would lose everything.””

Marcus laughed.

“Don’t pretend you were forced.””

Vanessa looked at him with hatred.

“You promised me half.””

The guests reacted instantly.

Half.

Not just a position.

Not just security.

Half.

Marcus shrugged.

“And you believed me.””

Alexander stared between them.

“So this was all planned?””

Nobody answered.

That was enough.

Then Lily tugged on my sleeve.

“Mommy.””

I looked down.

“What?””

She pointed toward the document in Marcus’s hand.

“There’s something wrong.””

My heart tightened.

“What?””

She looked at Marcus.

“He’s holding it upside down.””

I blinked.

“What?””

Lily whispered.

“I saw the paper in the video.””

Marcus suddenly looked toward her.

And for the first time all night...

He looked nervous.

Because Lily was right.

The document in his hand was upside down.

And if he had really found it in Alexander’s father’s private files...

He should have known exactly how to read it.

Alexander noticed too.

His eyes narrowed.

“Marcus.””

The room became silent.

“You didn’t find that document.””

Marcus said nothing.

“You stole it.””

Marcus’s expression hardened.

Then he looked at Lily.

Not at Alexander.

Not at Vanessa.

At my daughter.

And the way he looked at her made my blood run cold.

Because he wasn’t looking at her like a child.

He was looking at her like a problem.

A problem he needed to solve.

Then Marcus smiled and said:

“Interesting.””

He folded the document.

“Your daughter noticed that.””

He took one step closer.

“Which means she probably noticed something else too.””

I moved in front of Lily.

“What are you talking about?””

Marcus looked directly at me.

And his next words changed everything.

“Ask your daughter what she saw before she entered that bathroom.””

Lily’s fingers suddenly went cold inside mine.

Because she knew.

May you like

And whatever she had seen before recording Vanessa…

Was the one thing nobody had discovered yet.
