Chapter 4: The Lawyer Who Knew Too Much
Daniel Vale had spent twenty-two years standing beside the Vale family.
He had written their contracts.
Protected their secrets.
Attended their private meetings.
He was the man Alexander trusted when millions of dollars were at risk.
The man everyone called when a problem needed to disappear.
And now my eight-year-old daughter was pointing directly at him.
“That man helped her.””
No one spoke.
Daniel stood near the ballroom entrance, one hand resting against the polished wooden door.
For a moment, he looked more confused than afraid.
Then he smiled.
A small, controlled smile.
The kind people used when they believed they could talk their way out of anything.
“Alexander,” Daniel said calmly, “I think emotions are running high tonight.””
Alexander didn’t answer.
His eyes remained locked on the company lawyer.
“Is she right?””
Daniel glanced at Lily.
Then at me.
Then back at Alexander.
“Your daughter saw something she misunderstood.””
Lily immediately shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice was quiet.
But firm.
“I didn’t misunderstand.””
Daniel’s smile faded slightly.
Alexander noticed.
“So you admit she saw something?””
“No.””
“Then why did your face change?””
The room became tense.
Daniel adjusted his suit jacket.
“Because I am watching a child accuse me in front of hundreds of people.””
Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.
“Daniel, just tell them.””
Everyone turned toward her.
Alexander looked at his bride.
“Tell us what?””
Vanessa hesitated.
And that hesitation said everything.
“You know about this?””
Alexander’s voice became colder.
Vanessa looked away.
“I…”
“Answer me.””
She swallowed.
“Daniel helped prepare some things for the wedding.””
“Things?””
“The paperwork.””
Daniel interrupted.
“Nothing illegal.””
Alexander laughed bitterly.
“Nothing illegal?””
He pointed toward the screen still showing the frozen video.
“My bride removed a fake pregnancy belly in a private bathroom while discussing my inheritance with my brother.””
He stepped closer.
“And you’re telling me your involvement was paperwork?””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“You don’t understand the situation.””
“Then explain it.””
Daniel looked around the ballroom.
At the guests.
At the cameras.
At the employees.
Then he lowered his voice.
“Not here.””
Alexander stared at him.
“No.””
Daniel looked surprised.
“Alexander.””
“You spent years telling me that every decision involving Vale Industries needed transparency.””
He pointed around the room.
“Congratulations.””
His voice hardened.
“You have the biggest audience possible.””
A few guests looked uncomfortable.
They were wealthy people.
Powerful people.
People who understood that secrets were valuable.
And tonight, secrets were being sold for free.
Daniel sighed.
“Fine.””
He reached into his briefcase.
Several people stepped back.
But he only pulled out a folder.
“I want everyone to understand one thing.””
He placed the folder on the table.
“I did not create this situation.””
Alexander stared at the papers.
“Then who did?””
Daniel looked at Marcus.
And for the first time that night, someone openly challenged him.
“Your brother.””
Marcus laughed.
“That’s convenient.””
Daniel ignored him.
“Marcus approached me six months ago.””
The room erupted.
Marcus’s expression changed.
“You’re lying.””
Daniel turned.
“Am I?””
“You have no proof.””
Daniel opened the folder.
“I have every email.””
The color drained from Marcus’s face.
Alexander looked between them.
“Emails about what?””
Daniel took out printed documents.
“About changing the inheritance structure.””
Alexander grabbed the papers.
His eyes moved quickly.
I watched his face change as he read.
“What is this?””
Daniel looked at him.
“Your brother wanted a legal pathway to challenge your control of the company.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“That was a discussion.””
“No,” Daniel replied.
“It was a plan.””
The guests whispered.
Alexander kept reading.
Then he stopped.
“What is this clause?””
Daniel became quiet.
A terrible kind of quiet.
“What clause?””
Alexander looked up.
“The one about my marriage.””
My heart tightened.
Daniel didn’t answer.
Alexander’s voice rose.
“Daniel.””
Everyone waited.
Finally, Daniel spoke.
“Your father included a condition.””
Another condition.
It felt like every time we uncovered one secret, three more appeared.
“What condition?”” I asked.
Daniel looked at me.
And something about his expression made me nervous.
“A condition regarding the woman who would become Alexander’s wife.””
Alexander frowned.
“My wife?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked down.
“Because your father believed the wrong person beside you could destroy the Vale family.””
The room went quiet.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“That sounds ridiculous.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Does it?””
She stopped.
Alexander stared at him.
“My father wrote that?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then he said:
“Because he knew someone in the family was willing to do anything for control.””
Everyone looked at Marcus.
But Marcus only smiled.
“You’re all very dramatic.””
He walked toward the table.
“You’re forgetting one thing.””
He picked up the document Daniel had placed there.
“Even if everything you say is true, Alexander still doesn’t have an heir.””
The words hit the room.
And suddenly everyone understood.
Marcus wasn’t panicking.
Not yet.
Because he still believed he had one advantage.
The child clause.
The fake pregnancy.
The missing heir.
Alexander looked at him.
“You knew.””
Marcus shrugged.
“I knew enough.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You told me it would work.””
“It almost did.””
Her face twisted.
“Almost?””
Marcus turned toward her.
“You failed because you got careless.””
That sentence revealed more than any confession.
Vanessa stared at him.
“You’re blaming me?””
“I’m saying you should have kept your mouth shut.””
Alexander stepped between them.
“Stop.””
His voice was dangerous.
“What did you mean when you said she failed?””
Nobody answered.
Then Lily spoke.
“She didn’t fail because of me.””
Everyone looked at her.
Lily stepped forward.
“She failed because she dropped something.””
I knelt beside her.
“What did she drop?””
Lily reached into her small purse again.
This time, she pulled out a tiny object wrapped in a tissue.
My heart stopped.
Because I recognized it.
A silver key.
Daniel’s face changed instantly.
Vanessa looked terrified.
Alexander stared.
“Where did you get that?””
Lily looked at Vanessa.
“She dropped it in the bathroom.””
Vanessa whispered:
“No.””
Lily continued.
“I picked it up because I thought it was pretty.””
She handed it to Alexander.
He turned it over.
A number was engraved on it.
Not a room number.
A safe number.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Alexander…”
But Alexander raised his hand.
“No.””
His eyes stayed on the key.
“Why does my wife’s fake pregnancy helper have access to a private company safe?””
Nobody answered.
Then Marcus suddenly moved.
Fast.
Too fast.
He reached for the key.
Alexander caught his wrist.
The entire ballroom gasped.
For the first time, Marcus looked scared.
“Let go.””
Alexander tightened his grip.
“Why?””
Marcus stared at him.
Because he knew.
Everyone knew.
That key was not just evidence.
It was a doorway.
A doorway to whatever they had been hiding.
Daniel whispered:
“Alexander, you need to be careful.””
Alexander looked at him.
“Why?””
Daniel’s face turned pale.
“Because that key does not open a company safe.””
A chill moved through me.
“Then what does it open?””
Daniel looked at the key.
Then at Marcus.
Then at Alexander.
“It opens the private archive your father ordered me to seal the day before he died.””
Alexander froze.
“Archive?””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“And inside that archive…”
He stopped.
The room waited.
“What?””
Daniel looked toward me.
Then Lily.
Then finally Alexander.
“…is the truth about who your real enemy has been all along.””
The lights above us suddenly flickered.
Everyone looked up.
Then the ballroom doors opened.
A security guard rushed inside, holding a tablet.
“Mr. Vale.””
Alexander turned.
“What?””
The guard looked terrified.
“We found something in the archive.””
Alexander walked forward.
“What?””
The guard swallowed.
“It’s a recording.””
“Of what?””
The guard looked at everyone.
Then said:
“Your father’s final message.””
A silence fell.
Because Alexander’s father had been dead for six years.
And nobody knew there was a message.
The guard looked at Alexander.
“And he named the person who tried to destroy the Vale family.””
Marcus stopped smiling.
Because the guard’s next words were not a name.
May you like
They were a warning.
“Mr. Vale… your father said not to trust anyone standing in this room.””
