Chapter 9: The Truth Hidden Before Birth

The words echoed through the archive.

There was another heir.

Nobody moved.

Not even Marcus.

For the first time since I had known him, his confidence disappeared completely.

Because he had spent years building his entire plan around one belief.

That Lily was the only obstacle.

That if he could remove her, everything would belong to him.

But Richard Vale had just revealed something nobody expected.

There was another child.

Another secret.

Another piece of the puzzle.

Alexander looked at me.

And I knew what he was asking before he spoke.

“Did you know?””

My throat tightened.

“Yes.””

The answer destroyed the last piece of trust between us.

Alexander stepped back.

“You knew there was another child?””

I shook my head quickly.

“No.””

“Then what did you know?””

I looked at Lily.

Then at the screen.

Then back at Alexander.

“I knew Lily wasn’t the only baby involved that night.””

The room went silent.

Daniel lowered his eyes.

Marcus looked furious.

Vanessa looked terrified.

Alexander’s voice became softer.

“Tell me everything.””

So I did.

Because there was nowhere left to hide.

“When Lily was born, there was another mother in the room next to mine.””

Alexander listened.

“Her name was Emma.””

Daniel looked up.

“You remember her?””

I nodded.

“She was young. Alone. She didn’t have family there.””

I looked at Lily.

“She had a baby boy.””

Marcus’s face changed.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

“You know that name,” I said.

He didn’t answer.

Alexander noticed.

“Marcus.””

Marcus looked away.

I continued.

“The night Lily was born, Richard came to the hospital.””

Alexander frowned.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“He was sick.””

“I know.””

I remembered that night clearly.

Richard had looked exhausted.

But his eyes were sharp.

He had come because he discovered something.

Something terrifying.

“The hospital records had been altered before Lily was even born.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Because someone knew about the inheritance.””

I continued.

“Richard believed someone was planning to replace his bloodline.””

Alexander looked at Marcus.

“And that person was you.””

Marcus finally spoke.

“You have no idea what happened.””

His voice was different.

Less arrogant.

Almost defensive.

“You think I woke up one day and decided to destroy my family?””

Nobody answered.

He laughed bitterly.

“My entire life, Alexander was chosen.””

Alexander stared.

“What?””

“Our father looked at you like you were the future.””

Marcus pointed at him.

“You were the son who mattered.””

“That’s not true.””

Marcus smiled.

“You believe that because you were loved.””

The sentence landed.

Because it revealed the real wound.

Not money.

Not power.

Not the company.

Being second.

Marcus continued.

“I spent my entire life standing behind you.””

Alexander shook his head.

“So you destroyed everyone?””

Marcus’s eyes hardened.

“I created a place for myself.””

“No.””

Alexander stepped closer.

“You stole a place.””

Marcus looked at Lily.

“She was never supposed to be there.””

My body went cold.

Alexander’s expression turned dangerous.

“Be careful.””

Marcus ignored him.

“The inheritance was supposed to pass through my family.””

Daniel interrupted.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

Daniel opened another file.

“Richard changed the agreement because he discovered your plan.””

Marcus stared.

“What?””

Daniel looked at him.

“The original succession plan did favor the next male descendant.””

A pause.

“But after discovering what happened at the hospital, Richard changed everything.””

Alexander looked confused.

“What happened at the hospital?””

I closed my eyes.

The memory I had buried for years returned.

That night.

The hospital hallway.

The footsteps.

The locked doors.

The missing records.

“Marcus tried to switch the babies.””

The room went completely still.

Alexander stared.

“What?””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Daniel looked at Marcus.

And this time, even he seemed shocked.

“You tried to replace Lily with your son.””

Marcus said nothing.

The silence was confirmation.

Alexander looked like he couldn’t breathe.

“You were going to pretend your son was mine?””

Marcus finally answered.

“I was going to give the family what it needed.””

“A lie?””

“A successor.””

Alexander shook his head.

“You were willing to erase an innocent child.””

Marcus looked at Lily.

“She would have had a better life.””

Lily stepped back.

The fact that he spoke about her like an object made my heart break.

Alexander saw it.

And something changed.

The protective father inside him finally appeared.

“You never talk about my daughter like that again.””

Marcus laughed softly.

“Your daughter.””

He looked at Alexander.

“You still don’t understand.””

“What?””

Marcus smiled.

“Ask her mother.””

Every eye turned toward me.

I hated that moment.

Because I knew what was coming.

Alexander looked at me.

“What else?””

I whispered:

“The babies were switched.””

Nobody moved.

“What does that mean?””

I looked at Lily.

Then at Alexander.

“The night Lily was born…”

My voice shook.

“Someone tried to make it look like Emma’s baby was the Vale heir.””

Alexander stared.

“Did they succeed?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because Richard found out.””

I remembered him standing in that hospital room.

Holding two documents.

Knowing the truth before anyone else.

“He told me something.””

Alexander stepped closer.

“What?””

I looked at him.

“He told me to take Lily and leave.””

Alexander’s face changed.

“Why?””

“Because he knew you were surrounded by people who could be controlled.””

A pause.

“And he believed if you knew the truth too early, Marcus would use you against Lily.””

Alexander looked devastated.

“He trusted you.””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me after?””

My eyes filled.

“Because Richard died.””

Silence.

“And after he died, Marcus made sure nobody could reach you.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“He isolated Alexander.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You’re talking a lot tonight.””

Daniel ignored him.

“The phone calls.””

The meetings.

The information gaps.

The rumors.

Everything suddenly connected.

Marcus had not only tried to steal the company.

He had controlled the people around Alexander.

Including Alexander himself.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“What about my son?””

Everyone looked at her.

She was crying.

Not fake tears.

Real ones.

“Where is he?””

Nobody answered.

Daniel searched through the records.

Then stopped.

His expression changed.

“What?””

Alexander looked at him.

“Daniel.””

The lawyer turned the screen.

There was another document.

A custody record.

But the name was hidden.

Only one detail remained visible.

*Current guardian: Unknown.*

Vanessa stepped forward.

“No.””

She looked at Marcus.

“You told me he was safe.””

Marcus didn’t respond.

“You told me you knew where he was.””

Still nothing.

Her voice broke.

“Where is my son?””

Marcus finally looked at her.

And his answer was terrifying.

“He was never part of the plan.””

Vanessa stared.

“What?””

Marcus shrugged.

“He was a backup.””

The room erupted.

Even the guests who had stayed silent all night couldn’t remain quiet.

Alexander looked disgusted.

“You used your own child as a backup?””

Marcus looked at him.

“You don’t understand power.””

“No.””

Alexander’s voice was calm.

“I understand exactly.””

He looked at Lily.

“And that’s why you lost.””

Marcus’s expression darkened.

Then the archive computer suddenly made a sound.

A new notification appeared.

Daniel looked at the screen.

“What now?””

He opened the message.

His face went pale.

“What?””

Alexander moved closer.

“Read it.””

Daniel swallowed.

“It’s from Richard.””

“Another message?””

Daniel nodded.

“But this one was scheduled to open only after all three inheritance claims were discovered.””

Nobody understood.

“All three?””

Daniel clicked.

A document appeared.

Three names.

Three bloodlines.

Three children.

Alexander.

Marcus.

And one final name.

Nobody recognized it.

Except me.

Because I had seen it before.

Years ago.

On the hospital bracelet attached to Emma’s baby.

Daniel read the name aloud.

“Ethan.””

Vanessa whispered:

“My son.””

But then another line appeared.

A legal status.

*Biological connection confirmed: Vale family.*

Alexander stared.

“What does this mean?””

Daniel looked at the document.

Then at Lily.

Then at me.

His voice became barely audible.

“It means Richard Vale did not create one heir.””

A pause.

“He created three.””

Marcus stepped back.

Impossible.

For the first time, he looked truly afraid.

Because the final message appeared on the screen.

Richard’s voice played one last time.

“If you have found this, then the three children are alive.””

A pause.

“But there is one final truth.””

The recording continued.

“The heir who controls the Vale empire will not be chosen by blood.””

Everyone leaned closer.

Richard said:

“The heir will be chosen by the child who was betrayed first.””

The recording ended.

Every person in the room looked at Lily.

And my daughter whispered the one thing nobody expected.

“Grandpa told me.””

Alexander turned.

“Told you what?””

Lily looked at the screen.

May you like

Then at Marcus.

“He told me I would have to choose.””
