Chapter 3: The File With My Daughter’s Name

For three seconds, nobody moved.

The folder sat open on the screen.

*SOPHIE.*

Five letters.

My daughter’s name.

Amanda stood frozen near the doorway, one hand gripping the edge of her wedding dress.

“Don’t open that,” she said.

Her voice was different.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Afraid.

I had spent two years learning every version of Amanda’s voice.

The playful one she used when she chased Sophie around the living room.

The gentle one she used when she read bedtime stories.

The annoyed one she used when she thought I wasn’t listening.

But I had never heard this one.

Fear.

Real fear.

I looked at her.

“What is in this folder?””

“Nothing.””

I stared at her.

“Nothing with my daughter’s name on it?””

“It’s not what you think.””

I almost smiled.

Those words had become her shield.

Every secret had the same answer.

It’s not what you think.

I looked at Sophie.

She was still holding onto my jacket.

Her small face was pale.

“Daddy,” she whispered, “I saw her make it.””

Amanda’s head snapped toward her.

“You did not.””

Sophie shrank back.

I immediately stepped forward.

“Don’t talk to her like that.””

Amanda looked at me.

“I wasn’t threatening her.””

“You just told a four-year-old she was lying.””

“She doesn’t understand.””

I looked down at the phone.

“Then explain.””

Amanda looked away.

No explanation came.

Derek stood by the door, watching everything.

“You should listen to the file,” he said quietly.

Amanda turned sharply.

“Derek, don’t.””

“You’re already caught.””

Her expression hardened.

“You think he’s going to protect you?””

Derek laughed bitterly.

“No. I think I’m done destroying my life for yours.””

I looked between them.

“You two have been planning this together.””

Derek didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

I pressed the folder.

Inside were three files.

Two videos.

One audio recording.

And a document.

The first video was dated three weeks earlier.

I pressed play.

The screen showed my living room.

My own house.

The camera angle was strange.

It looked like it had been recorded from a hidden device.

Then Amanda walked into view.

She was sitting on my couch.

Talking to someone off-camera.

“I don’t know how much longer I can keep pretending,” she said.

My chest tightened.

The Amanda on the screen was not the Amanda I knew.

She wasn’t smiling.

She wasn’t warm.

She looked impatient.

A man’s voice answered.

“You said the marriage would solve everything.””

“It will.””

“When?””

“After the wedding.””

My hands tightened around the phone.

The voice belonged to Derek.

Amanda leaned back.

“The important thing is getting access.””

“Daniel trusts you.””

“He does.””

The words hurt.

Not because they were surprising.

Because they were true.

Amanda smiled on the recording.

“He thinks I’m helping him.””

Derek laughed.

“And the daughter?””

Amanda looked toward the hallway.

Toward Sophie’s bedroom.

My stomach dropped.

“She’s a problem.””

The video stopped.

Nobody spoke.

The room felt smaller.

I looked at Amanda.

She was crying.

“Daniel…”

I held up my hand.

“Don’t.””

She stopped.

I pressed the second video.

This one was newer.

The date was two days ago.

Again, my house.

Again, Amanda.

But this time she was holding a folder.

My folder.

The one where I kept my financial documents.

She opened it.

Then she took pictures of every page.

The camera captured her face clearly.

No misunderstanding.

No confusion.

No excuse.

She knew exactly what she was doing.

Sophie looked away from the screen.

I noticed.

That broke my heart more than anything else.

My daughter had seen this.

She had been carrying this fear while I was planning a wedding.

While I was choosing flowers.

While I was telling everyone Amanda was going to be part of our family.

I turned off the video.

“Why?””

Amanda wiped her cheeks.

“I can explain.””

“No.””

“Daniel, please.””

“No more explanations.””

My voice was calm.

Almost too calm.

“Why did you record my documents?””

She looked at the floor.

“I made mistakes.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

She didn’t speak.

I stepped closer.

“Of losing money?””

Her eyes lifted.

“Of losing everything.””

I stared at her.

“You mean losing the life you wanted.””

She flinched.

Derek looked away.

I noticed.

“Tell me the truth,” I said.

Amanda took a shaky breath.

“The truth is… I was desperate.””

“For what?””

She sat down slowly.

Her wedding dress spread around her like a white blanket.

A strange image.

A woman dressed like she was about to start a new life.

Admitting she had been planning to destroy mine.

“My ex-husband left me with debt,” she said.

I stayed silent.

“I spent years trying to rebuild.””

“And?””

“And I met you.””

There was no warmth in the way she said it.

That was the worst part.

Like meeting me had been a solution.

Not a relationship.

“You were kind,” she continued.

I laughed quietly.

“Kind.””

“Yes.””

“You mean useful.””

Her silence answered.

Sophie buried her face against my side.

Amanda looked at her.

“I never wanted to hurt her.””

I looked at my daughter.

“She thinks you did.””

“I made mistakes.””

“You told someone she was a problem.””

“I didn’t mean it.””

“You said you would send her away.””

Amanda froze.

I knew immediately.

She knew exactly what I was talking about.

“You heard that?””

Sophie looked up.

“The recording.””

Amanda’s face changed.

“No.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“The audio.””

She stood up.

“No, Daniel.””

I pressed play.

For a moment, there was only static.

Then Amanda’s voice filled the room.

“She’s only a child.””

A pause.

Then Derek’s voice.

“She’ll tell him eventually.””

Amanda answered:

“She won’t understand.””

My jaw clenched.

“She trusts me.””

Derek said something too quiet to hear.

Then Amanda spoke.

“After the wedding, I’ll handle it.””

Another pause.

Then:

“I’ll send her away.””

The recording ended.

Sophie started crying.

I turned it off immediately.

I didn’t need to hear more.

I had heard enough.

Amanda covered her mouth.

“That was taken out of context.””

I looked at her.

“How?””

She had no answer.

“You said the words.””

“I was angry.””

“You were planning my wedding.””

“I was frustrated.””

“With a child?””

“No.””

“Then with who?””

She looked at me.

And for a moment, I saw something.

Not guilt.

Resentment.

“You don’t understand.””

“Try me.””

She wiped her tears.

“I gave up everything for you.””

I stared at her.

“You chose this.””

“I moved into your house.””

“You wanted to.””

“I changed my whole life.””

“And I was grateful.””

“You always put Sophie first.””

The room went silent.

I felt those words hit harder than anything else.

Because they revealed the truth.

Amanda didn’t hate Sophie because of something Sophie did.

She hated that Sophie existed between Amanda and everything she wanted.

I looked at my daughter.

Then back at Amanda.

“You were jealous of my child.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

Amanda shook her head.

“I wanted us to be a family.””

“No.””

I pointed at the phone.

“You wanted control.””

Her face hardened.

“You think you know everything now?””

I froze.

The way she said it sounded like a warning.

“What does that mean?””

She looked toward Derek.

He lowered his eyes.

I stepped closer.

“What else is there?””

Amanda said nothing.

I looked at Derek.

“You know.””

He hesitated.

Then slowly nodded.

“There’s one more thing.””

Amanda whispered, “Don’t.””

I turned toward him.

“What?””

Derek swallowed.

“The folder wasn’t created to blackmail you.””

“Then why?””

He looked at Sophie.

“Because Amanda was keeping records.””

“Records of what?””

Derek’s face tightened.

“Of things she did.””

A cold feeling moved through my body.

“What things?””

He looked at Amanda.

Then back at me.

“She wanted proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That if something happened to you…”

He stopped.

I waited.

“What?””

Derek took a breath.

“She could explain why she needed custody of Sophie.””

My blood went cold.

The hallway outside suddenly became loud.

Guests were still waiting.

People were still smiling.

They had no idea that inside this room, my wedding had turned into something else entirely.

I looked at Amanda.

“Custody?””

She didn’t deny it.

That was the moment I knew.

The house.

The money.

The documents.

They were only pieces of the plan.

The real target was standing beside me.

My daughter.

I pulled Sophie closer.

Amanda whispered:

“Daniel, you need to understand something.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

Her eyes moved toward the phone.

Toward the folder.

Toward the evidence she thought she controlled.

Then she said the one thing I never expected.

“Sophie wasn’t the only person I was protecting myself from.””

My heart stopped.

“What does that mean?””

Amanda looked at Derek.

Derek looked terrified.

And then my phone rang.

Not Amanda’s.

Not Derek’s.

Mine.

The caller ID showed a name I hadn’t seen in years.

Sophie’s grandmother.

My late wife’s mother.

I answered.

May you like

The first words she said made me forget everything else.

“Daniel… there’s something about Sophie’s mother that you were never told.””
