Chapter 9: The Woman Who Was Never a Stranger

The photograph slipped from my fingers.

It landed on the carpet.

But I couldn’t look away.

Because my mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

Amanda.

Standing beside my father.

Standing beside Ethan.

Standing beside Emily.

Years before I ever knew her.

Years before she walked into my life.

Years before she smiled at me across a coffee shop and told me she believed every person deserved a second chance.

A second chance.

That was what I thought I was giving her.

But maybe she had been waiting for mine to end.

“Where did you get this?”” I asked.

My voice didn’t sound like my own.

Thomas looked at the picture.

Then he looked away.

“I was afraid you would find it.””

I turned toward him.

“You knew?””

He didn’t answer.

“Dad.””

The word felt strange.

I hadn’t called him that since he came back from the dead.

His eyes lifted.

“Yes.””

“You knew Amanda before me?””

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“How?””

Thomas sat down slowly.

Like the weight of the past had finally become too heavy to carry.

“Because Amanda wasn’t a stranger.””

I stared at him.

“She was connected to Ethan.””

“Connected how?””

Thomas looked at the photograph.

“Her real name wasn’t Amanda.””

The room went silent.

Linda covered her mouth.

Even she looked shocked.

“What are you talking about?”” I asked.

Thomas took a breath.

“She changed her name years ago.””

My hands curled into fists.

“Why?””

“Because Ethan helped her.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Helped her do what?””

Thomas looked at Sophie.

Then lowered his voice.

“Disappear.””

I felt sick.

The woman I planned to marry had a hidden identity.

A hidden phone.

A hidden past.

And somehow, every road led back to my family.

I picked up the photograph.

“Explain this.””

Thomas pointed at the image.

“This was taken fifteen years ago.””

I looked closer.

Emily looked younger.

Happy.

Before all of this.

“She was investigating Ethan,” Thomas said.

“Emily knew him?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“She found records connecting him to financial crimes.””

I looked at the picture again.

“But why is Amanda there?””

Thomas was quiet.

Then Linda spoke.

“Because she was the person Emily was investigating.””

I turned.

“What?””

Linda looked devastated.

“I didn’t know at the time.””

“You knew Emily was investigating someone.””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me.””

Linda looked down.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

I almost laughed.

Everyone had the same excuse.

Everyone protected me by keeping me blind.

Thomas continued.

“Amanda approached Emily first.””

“Why?””

“She wanted information.””

“About what?””

“Ethan.””

I frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does if you understand what Ethan was doing.””

I waited.

Thomas looked at the photograph.

“He collected people.””

“Collected?””

“People with problems. People who needed money. People who wanted revenge.””

My stomach tightened.

“Amanda.””

“Yes.””

“She was one of them.””

Thomas nodded.

“But Emily discovered something.””

“What?””

“That Amanda wasn’t just being used by Ethan.””

A terrible thought formed.

“She was helping him.””

Thomas looked at me.

“Yes.””

I looked toward the stairs.

Toward Sophie.

My daughter.

The person everyone kept circling around.

The person everyone wanted something from.

I felt anger rising.

“Then why did Emily trust her?””

Thomas looked at me.

“She didn’t.””

I froze.

“What?””

“Emily never trusted Amanda.””

“Then why was she around?””

Thomas hesitated.

“Because Emily thought she could expose Ethan through her.””

I stared.

“She was using Amanda?””

“Yes.””

“And Amanda knew?””

“I don’t know.””

I looked at the photo.

A question burned inside me.

“Then why did Emily never tell me?””

Thomas’s expression changed.

“Because she found out something worse.””

“What?””

“She realized Ethan wasn’t acting alone.””

My heart sank.

“Who else?””

Nobody answered.

Then the sound of a car engine came from outside.

Everyone froze.

Thomas immediately stood.

“Turn off the lights.””

“What?””

“Now.””

The urgency in his voice made me move.

Linda grabbed Sophie.

I switched off every light.

The house became dark.

We waited.

A car door closed outside.

Then footsteps.

Slow.

Confident.

Not hiding.

Someone who believed they belonged here.

A shadow passed across the window.

Sophie whispered:

“Daddy.””

I moved toward her.

“I’m here.””

Thomas stood near the hallway.

His face was tense.

Then came a knock.

Three times.

The same way as before.

My stomach turned.

Thomas whispered:

“It’s him.””

Ethan.

I stepped forward.

Thomas grabbed my arm.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“You said I needed the truth.””

“Yes.””

“Then I’m done hiding.””

Before he could stop me, I opened the door.

Ethan stood outside.

For the first time, I saw him clearly.

Not through messages.

Not through documents.

Not through someone else’s fear.

He looked nothing like the monster I imagined.

That made it worse.

Because monsters are easier when they look like monsters.

He looked normal.

A man in his fifties.

Calm eyes.

A tired face.

A polite smile.

“Hello, Daniel.””

I stared.

“You’re Ethan.””

He nodded.

“I am.””

“You broke into my house.””

“No.””

“You sent someone to photograph my daughter.””

His expression changed slightly.

“I didn’t.””

I laughed.

“Of course.””

“I came because I want to stop this.””

“Stop what?””

“The lies.””

I stepped closer.

“You’re the one who lied.””

He looked past me.

At Thomas.

“Father.””

Thomas’s face hardened.

“Don’t call me that.””

Ethan smiled sadly.

“You still pretend I don’t exist.””

“You made your choices.””

“And you made yours.””

The anger between them felt older than me.

Older than Sophie.

Older than everything.

I looked at Ethan.

“What do you want?””

He looked directly at me.

“Your daughter.””

My entire body went cold.

I moved in front of the doorway.

“You’re not getting near her.””

“That’s exactly what everyone thinks.””

“What?””

“That I want her money.””

I stared.

“Don’t you?””

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

Almost offended.

“Then why?””

Ethan looked at Thomas.

“Tell him.””

Thomas didn’t speak.

I turned.

“Tell me.””

Thomas looked destroyed.

Finally, he said:

“Because Sophie is the last person who can prove what happened.””

I looked between them.

“What happened?””

Ethan stepped forward.

“Your father didn’t create the trust to protect Sophie.””

Thomas looked away.

I felt the world shift.

“What?””

Ethan continued.

“He created it because he knew the truth would eventually come out.””

“What truth?””

Ethan reached into his coat.

I prepared myself.

But he didn’t pull out a weapon.

He pulled out a folder.

He handed it to me.

Inside was a document.

Old.

Official.

A birth record.

I read the name.

Then froze.

Because the child listed below wasn’t Ethan.

Wasn’t me.

It was another name.

Another secret.

A name I had never heard.

“What is this?””

Ethan looked at me.

“The reason your father hid everything.””

I looked at Thomas.

He looked terrified.

“Daniel…”

I held up the document.

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You’re going to tell me.””

The room went silent.

Then Ethan said:

“Your father didn’t have one secret child.””

My blood ran cold.

“He had two.””

I looked down at the document again.

The name stared back at me.

And suddenly I understood why Emily had been afraid.

Why Amanda had been chosen.

Why Sophie had become the target.

Because the person controlling everything was not someone from my father’s past.

It was someone from my own.

Ethan pointed at the document.

“That person has been in your life the entire time.””

I looked up.

“Who?””

Ethan’s eyes moved toward the stairs.

Toward Sophie.

Then he said:

“Ask yourself who knew Emily’s secrets before Emily died.””

My heart stopped.

Because I already knew the answer.

And I didn’t want to believe it.

The person who knew everything.

The person who had been helping me.

The person who had guided me toward the truth.

May you like

Was standing in my house.

And had been lying from the beginning.
