Chapter 4: The Secret Sophie’s Mother Left Behind
I almost didn’t answer the call.
Not because I didn’t want to hear my late mother-in-law’s voice.
Because after everything that had happened in the last hour, I was terrified of what the next truth would be.
My hand tightened around the phone.
Sophie was still holding onto me.
Amanda was standing across the room.
Derek was silent.
The entire world seemed to wait.
“Daniel?”” my mother-in-law, Linda, said again.
“Are you there?””
I swallowed.
“Yes.””
My voice barely sounded like mine.
“Linda, what’s happening?””
There was a pause.
A long one.
The kind of pause people make when they’re trying to decide how much pain they’re about to cause.
Then she said:
“Are you alone?””
I looked around the room.
“No.””
Another pause.
“Who is there?””
I looked directly at Amanda.
“The woman I was supposed to marry.””
Silence.
Then Linda whispered:
“Then you need to leave that room.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
“Daniel, listen to me carefully. Do not sign anything. Do not let Amanda convince you that she is helping you. And do not let her near Sophie.””
The words hit harder because they sounded like a warning.
Not an accusation.
A warning.
I stepped away from Amanda.
“How do you know her?””
Amanda’s face changed.
Just slightly.
But she heard the question.
And she looked afraid.
Linda took a shaky breath.
“I met her before you did.””
The room went silent.
I stared at Amanda.
“What?””
“She came to see me after you and Sophie moved into the new house.””
My mind raced.
That wasn’t possible.
Amanda had told me she had never met Linda before our engagement.
“She said she wanted to understand Sophie better,” Linda continued.
My grip tightened around the phone.
“What did she ask?””
Linda didn’t answer immediately.
That scared me more.
“She asked about Sophie’s inheritance.””
My blood ran cold.
“What inheritance?””
Amanda looked away.
That was enough.
I didn’t need Linda to explain.
But she did anyway.
“Your wife left something for Sophie.””
I stopped breathing.
My wife.
Emily.
Even hearing her name without hearing it hurt.
Emily had been gone for three years.
Three years of learning how to live with an empty side of the bed.
Three years of answering Sophie’s questions about why Mommy couldn’t come home.
Three years of pretending I was stronger than I was.
“What did Emily leave?”” I asked.
Linda’s voice became quieter.
“She didn’t trust everyone around her.””
I looked at Amanda.
“Who?””
“She never told me directly.””
“Linda.””
“She told me she had discovered something before she passed.””
My heart started pounding.
“Something about what?””
“About money.””
I looked at Derek.
His expression changed.
Like he already knew where this was going.
“Emily believed someone was trying to access accounts connected to Sophie.””
My knees almost gave out.
I sat down slowly.
Sophie looked up at me.
“Daddy?””
I forced myself to focus.
“It’s okay, sweetheart.””
But it wasn’t.
Nothing was okay.
Amanda stepped forward.
“Daniel, she’s confused.””
I covered the phone.
“Don’t.””
Her face hardened.
“She doesn’t know what she’s talking about.””
I put the phone back to my ear.
“Linda, tell me everything.””
“I should have told you years ago.””
“Why didn’t you?””
“Because Emily made me promise.””
I closed my eyes.
“Promise what?””
“That I wouldn’t say anything unless I believed Sophie was in danger.””
My eyes opened.
“And now you think she is?””
Linda’s voice broke.
“Yes.””
The word stayed in the air.
I looked at my daughter.
A four-year-old girl who had stood in front of a wedding dress and tried to stop a mistake everyone else was celebrating.
She had known.
Before me.
Before anyone.
“Where are you?”” I asked Linda.
“At home.””
“I’m coming.””
“No.””
I frowned.
“No?””
“Not yet.””
“Why?””
“Because if Amanda knows I called you, she’ll know what I told you.””
I looked at Amanda.
She was watching me carefully.
Too carefully.
Linda continued.
“You need to find Emily’s old laptop.””
“What?””
“She left instructions.””
“Where?””
“In the place only you would know.””
My mind searched through memories.
Emily.
Our house.
Our marriage.
The years before everything changed.
Then I remembered.
The wooden box in the attic.
The one we used to keep old photographs.
The one Emily always called our time capsule.
“She hid something there?””
“Yes.””
“What?””
“I don’t know.””
That frightened me.
Linda had always known everything.
If she didn’t know, Emily had gone to great lengths to hide it.
“Daniel,” Linda said.
“Yes?””
“Trust your daughter.””
I looked at Sophie.
“She tried to tell me.””
“I know.””
“How?””
Linda was quiet.
Then she said:
“Because Emily told me she would.””
The room blurred.
“What do you mean?””
“Your wife knew Sophie was observant. She knew people would underestimate her because she was young.””
I looked at my daughter.
The little girl who had saved me.
“Emily left instructions for her?””
“No.””
Linda paused.
“She left them for you.””
The call ended.
I lowered the phone.
Nobody spoke.
Amanda was the first.
“What did she say?””
I looked at her.
For the first time since I met her, I didn’t feel love.
I felt uncertainty.
And that hurt.
“She told me to stay away from you.””
Amanda’s face fell.
“That’s not true.””
“Then why are you scared?””
“I’m not.””
“You are.””
She looked at Sophie.
“I love this family.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Her eyes filled.
“Daniel.””
“You love what this family gives you.””
“That’s cruel.””
“Is it?””
She didn’t answer.
Derek suddenly stepped forward.
“You should go.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“Take Sophie and leave.””
Amanda glared at him.
“You’re really doing this?””
Derek ignored her.
“You don’t know everything.””
I looked at him.
“Then tell me.””
He hesitated.
Amanda said quietly:
“Don’t.””
Derek looked exhausted.
“I wasn’t supposed to be involved with this.””
“But you were.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He looked down.
“Because Amanda found me.””
“For what?””
“She needed someone who understood financial systems.””
My jaw tightened.
“You helped her steal from me?””
“No.””
The answer came quickly.
“I helped her access information.””
“That’s not better.””
“I know.””
“Why stop now?””
He looked at Sophie.
“Because I didn’t know she was involved.””
“Involved in what?””
Derek’s face turned pale.
“Making Sophie look unstable.””
I froze.
“What?””
Amanda shouted:
“Stop talking!””
But it was too late.
I stared at Derek.
“What do you mean?””
He swallowed.
“She was collecting things.””
“What things?””
“Recordings.””
“Of who?””
“Sophie.””
The room went cold.
I looked at Amanda.
“No.””
Amanda’s eyes filled with panic.
“Daniel, listen.””
“No.””
“She was having emotional reactions.””
“She’s four.””
“I was documenting concerns.””
“You were building a case.””
Amanda said nothing.
That silence was the answer.
I took Sophie’s hand.
“We’re leaving.””
Amanda stepped in front of the door.
“No.””
I stopped.
“You need to move.””
“Daniel, please.””
“No.””
“You’re making a decision based on incomplete information.””
I looked at her.
“You had a secret phone.””
Silence.
“You photographed my documents.””
Silence.
“You planned around my money.””
Silence.
“You recorded my daughter.””
Her eyes filled.
But she didn’t deny it.
I opened the door.
The hallway was full of guests.
Friends.
Family.
People who had come to watch me start a new chapter.
Instead, they watched me walk out holding my daughter’s hand.
Someone asked:
“Daniel, what happened?””
I didn’t answer.
I kept walking.
Then behind me, Amanda called my name.
Not angrily.
Not desperately.
Almost calmly.
“Daniel.””
I stopped.
She said:
“You really should ask yourself why Emily didn’t tell you the truth before she died.””
I turned slowly.
Amanda’s face had changed.
The fear was gone.
Now there was something else.
Confidence.
A strange kind of confidence.
Like she knew a secret I didn’t.
I tightened my grip on Sophie’s hand.
“What are you talking about?””
Amanda smiled sadly.
And that smile scared me more than her anger.
“Your wife wasn’t afraid of me.””
A chill ran through me.
“Then who was she afraid of?””
Amanda looked toward the wedding guests.
Then back at me.
“Ask yourself why Emily was investigating your own family before she passed away.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
And suddenly, the wedding I had canceled felt like the smallest part of the nightmare.
May you like
Because Amanda wasn’t the only secret my family had been hiding.
And somewhere in my attic was the truth my wife died trying to protect.
