Chapter 1: The Woman Who Wouldn’t Call 911

“Emma, hold on!””

Marcus Cross’s voice ripped across the bright afternoon as he slammed a rescue pole against the reinforced pool cover, striking it again and again until the material finally split.

Beneath the cover, Emma Vance could barely keep her mouth above the turquoise water.

Her blue engagement dress twisted around her legs. Something had caught the fabric near the damaged drain, pinning her ankle while the motorized cover continued sliding over the swimming pool.

Around them, elegant guests in pastel suits and summer dresses froze on the white stone patio. Crystal glasses clattered against serving trays. Somewhere near the mansion’s rose-covered terrace, a string quartet stopped mid-song.

“Emma!”” Marcus shouted, driving the pole into the torn opening.

“Grab my hand!””

Emma reached upward.

Her fingertips brushed his.

Then the fabric tightened around her ankle, dragging her beneath the surface again.

Marcus dropped the pole, plunged through the opening, and disappeared into the water.

At the far end of the patio, Victoria Cross stood perfectly still.

The sixty-two-year-old matriarch wore a cream designer dress, diamond earrings, and an expression so composed that she might have been watching a waiter spill champagne rather than watching her future daughter-in-law struggle for her life.

“Call an ambulance!”” a guest screamed.

Victoria turned her head toward the woman.

“Please don’t create a scene,” she said.

The woman stared at her.

“Your son is in the pool!””

“And I can see that.””

Victoria didn’t move.

Underwater, Marcus found Emma’s dress tangled against the damaged drain assembly. He pulled at the fabric, but it had wedged itself beneath a jagged piece of the broken cover mechanism.

Emma’s eyes were wide. Her hands clawed desperately at his shoulders.

Marcus braced one foot against the pool wall and yanked the trapped fabric free.

The dress tore.

He wrapped an arm around Emma’s waist and kicked toward the opening, pushing her ahead of him until both of them burst through the broken cover.

“Mom, call 911!”” Marcus shouted.

Victoria lifted one hand to shade her eyes from the sunlight.

“You should have watched where you were going,” she replied.

Marcus dragged Emma onto the stones.

She landed on her side, coughing violently. Water streamed from her curls and blue dress. A small scrape marked her forearm, but the rest of her body was uninjured.

Marcus dropped to his knees.

“Emma, look at me. Can you breathe?””

Emma tried to answer, but another coughing fit seized her.

“Stay with me,” Marcus pleaded.

“Baby, please.””

“I’m—” She gasped.

“I’m trying.””

Marcus brushed wet curls from her face.

Behind him, Victoria touched a discreet bracelet beneath her sleeve.

Two security guards immediately approached.

“Elena!”” Marcus shouted toward the mansion entrance.

“Get these people to call an ambulance!””

Elena Ruiz, the head of family security, hurried across the patio. She was forty-two, sharp-eyed, and dressed in a tailored dark suit. She had worked for the Cross family long enough to recognize the difference between a genuine emergency and an attempt to control one.

“Sir, the guards are moving,” Elena said.

“Then tell them to move faster!””

Victoria stepped between Elena and Emma.

“Get away from her.””

Elena stopped.

“Mrs. Cross, she needs medical attention.””

“I said, get away from her.””

Marcus rose, water dripping from his shirt onto the pristine patio.

“What is wrong with you?”” he demanded.

“You watched her drown!””

Victoria’s face tightened.

“Lower your voice.””

“No. You don't get to tell me to lower my voice while Emma is lying here because someone nearly killed her.””

Two guards seized Marcus by the arms.

“Are you out of your minds?”” he shouted, struggling against their grip.

“Let go of me!””

They restrained him several feet from Emma without striking him.

Victoria knelt beside her future daughter-in-law.

Her cream dress settled neatly around her knees. She opened her expensive handbag, searched inside, and withdrew a tiny clear vial containing a small amount of colorless liquid.

Emma noticed it immediately.

Victoria angled her body to shield the vial from the guests.

“Everyone here is frightened,” she murmured.

“You can help me make this disappear.””

Emma tried to sit up.

“What is that?””

“Something that will settle this situation.””

Victoria placed the vial in Emma’s trembling hand and curled Emma’s fingers around it.

Then she leaned close enough for Emma to smell her expensive perfume.

“Drink this, or Marcus goes to prison.””

Emma stopped breathing for a different reason.

She looked past Victoria toward Marcus.

His face had gone pale with fury.

“Mom, what did you give her?””

Victoria didn't answer him.

Instead, she pressed Emma’s hand closed around the vial.

“You have no idea what this family can do to you,” she whispered.

Emma had spent seven years examining financial records that other accountants were too intimidated to question. She knew the difference between an innocent mistake and a carefully constructed lie.

And she knew when someone wanted evidence destroyed.

She closed her fingers tighter.

“Okay,” Emma whispered.

Victoria smiled.

It was the first genuine smile she had offered all afternoon.

And it frightened Emma more than the water had.

Because the woman who had just threatened the man Emma loved was now convinced that Emma would do exactly what she was told.

Victoria had made one critical mistake.

She had assumed that the frightened woman in the blue dress had stopped thinking.

She hadn't.

Emma was watching everything.

Including Elena Ruiz, who had noticed the vial.

And for the first time since the rescue, Victoria's composure began to crack.

Elena took one deliberate step toward them.

“Mrs. Cross,” she said, “what exactly did you just put in Emma's hand?””

Victoria slowly turned toward her.

“That's a family matter.””

Elena's expression hardened.

“Not if it involves a medical emergency.””

Then Victoria raised her bracelet again.

A third guard appeared at the mansion doors, carrying something that made Marcus go completely still.

His father's old phone.

The phone everyone had been told was destroyed after his father's death.

Marcus stared at it.

“Where did you get that?””

Victoria rose, keeping her eyes on Emma.

“From the one person who knows what really happened to your father.””

May you like

Emma felt the vial press into her palm.

And suddenly, she understood that the attack at the pool might have been only the beginning.
