Chapter 4: The Dead Man Who Confessed

For several seconds, Emma couldn't speak.

The hospital room seemed to shrink around her. Outside the window, afternoon sunlight reflected off the glass buildings across the street, bright and ordinary, as if the world hadn't just shifted beneath her feet.

Marcus reached for the phone.

“Detective, repeat what you just said.””

Detective Harris's voice remained measured.

“The recording accusing Richard Vance of murder contains a voice we believe belonged to Thomas Bell, a former financial officer at Cross Meridian Holdings. Bell died twelve years ago.””

Marcus frowned.

“My father died twenty years ago. Thomas Bell died twelve years ago. How does that make the recording impossible?””

“It doesn't make every possible recording impossible, Mr. Cross. It means the version accusing Mr. Vance may have been assembled from separate audio sources.””

Emma pressed a hand to her mouth.

Her father had warned her about manipulated financial records. She had never imagined that someone might manipulate a dead man's voice.

“Detective,” she said, “where is my father?””

“Under questioning at the county station. He's cooperating, but he refuses to discuss the original ledger without you present.””

“Why me?””

“He says you have the only copy of a file that can establish the timeline.””

Marcus looked sharply at her.

Emma felt the familiar weight of the secret she had carried for years.

“I have a flash drive,” she admitted.

“But I don't know everything that's on it.””

“Bring it to the station,” Harris said.

“And don't send copies to anyone until our digital forensics team examines it.””

The call ended.

Marcus stared at Emma.

“You told me the drive contained transaction records.””

“It does.””

“What else?””

“I don't know. My father encrypted part of it. I was still trying to break the encryption when you proposed.””

“You were going to marry me while investigating my family?””

“I was investigating a set of accounts. I didn't know your mother was involved in what happened to your father.””

Marcus turned away.

“That's not an answer.””

“It's the truth.””

He ran both hands through his hair.

“When we talked about our future, you knew something about my father's company could destroy us, and you didn't tell me.””

“I was afraid that if I told you before I had proof, I'd be accusing your family of a crime I couldn't establish.””

“And now?””

Emma looked at the sealed vial on the counter.

“Now your mother tried to make me drink something while threatening to send you to prison.””

Marcus said nothing.

Elena stepped between them, her voice calm but firm.

“You can decide what this means for your relationship later. Right now, somebody manipulated a pool safety system, somebody may have tampered with evidence in a death investigation, and your mother is still free to interfere.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Can you get us to the station without Victoria knowing?””

“I can try. But if she controls the estate security accounts, she may have access to more information than we realize.””

Emma swung her legs over the side of the bed.

The nurse had told her to rest. The doctors wanted to observe her longer because of the unknown liquid and the near-drowning. She wasn't eager to ignore that advice, but she needed to know why her father had suddenly resurfaced.

Marcus immediately moved toward her.

“You're not going anywhere until the doctor clears you.””

“Then get the doctor.””

“Emma—”

“Marcus, I spent half my life wondering why my father disappeared. Now someone is telling me he knows who altered a recording about your father's death. I'm not sitting here while the people who hurt us rewrite the story.””

He held her gaze.

Then he nodded once.

“Fine. But I'm going with you.””

An hour later, after medical staff had assessed Emma and approved her departure with instructions to return if her symptoms worsened, the three of them entered the county investigative building through a side entrance.

Elena had called ahead. Two investigators escorted them to a small interview room.

Richard Vance sat at a metal table.

At sixty-one, he looked older than Emma remembered. His hair had thinned at the temples, and deep lines bracketed his mouth. He wore a plain gray shirt with the sleeves rolled to his elbows.

When Emma entered, he stood so quickly his chair scraped across the floor.

“Emma.””

She crossed the room and threw her arms around him.

For one moment, neither of them said anything.

Then she pulled away.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

Richard looked at her wet-dress photographs on a phone Elena had shown him on the way in. His expression changed from relief to horror.

“What happened to you?””

“Your old business partner's wife nearly drowned me.””

Richard gripped the table.

“Victoria?””

“Yes.””

He closed his eyes.

“I should have known she'd find you.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“You knew my mother was dangerous?””

Richard looked at him for a long time.

“I knew she was capable of doing things that other people would refuse to believe.””

“Then tell us what happened to my father.””

Richard pulled out a chair.

“Sit down. Both of you.””

Elena remained by the door while Detective Harris placed a recorder on the table.

Richard began carefully.

“Daniel discovered that millions of dollars had been diverted from Cross Meridian's investment accounts. At first, he believed the transfers were unauthorized. Then he found that the money had been routed through companies connected to Victoria's private holdings.””

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“How much money?””

“Enough to bankrupt several legitimate businesses if the truth came out. But the amount wasn't the worst part. Some of those transfers were tied to properties purchased through false ownership records.””

Emma leaned forward.

“Shell companies.””

Richard nodded.

“You were right to investigate them.””

“Why did you disappear?””

“Because I helped Daniel uncover the transfers, and Victoria discovered that I had copies of the ledger.””

Marcus struck the table with his palm.

“And you let me believe my father died in an accident?””

Richard flinched.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“Everyone keeps saying that. Meanwhile, my mother has spent twenty years telling me my father was a good man who died because he trusted the wrong people.””

“He was a good man,” Richard said.

“And he did trust the wrong people.””

“Did you kill him?””

“No.””

The answer came so quickly that Marcus fell silent.

Richard reached into his pocket and removed a small brass key.

“Daniel gave me this two days before he died. He said that if anything happened to him, I had to preserve the original recording and the ledger.””

Emma stared at the key.

“Where is it?””

“Somewhere Victoria can't access.””

Detective Harris leaned forward.

“Mr. Vance, you said you could identify who altered the recording. Who did it?””

Richard looked directly at Marcus.

“Your father's original recording was made in his study. It captured an argument between Daniel and Victoria. Thomas Bell later helped transfer the audio to a digital system.””

“So Bell altered it?”” Marcus asked.

“No. Bell discovered the alterations.””

Richard's voice broke slightly.

“He was killed in a car accident twelve years ago. Before he died, he told me someone had offered him a fortune to testify that I had confessed to killing Daniel.””

Emma felt a chill.

“Who made the offer?””

Richard didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at Detective Harris.

“I need to know whether you recovered the second phone from Victoria's possession.””

“We have not seized it yet.””

“Then the altered recording may still be on it.””

Marcus rose.

“We need to get that phone.””

“No,” Richard said sharply.

“You need to understand what you're walking into.””

He placed the brass key on the table.

“Victoria isn't the only person who wanted your father dead.””

The room went silent.

Emma stared at him.

“Who else?””

Richard looked toward the observation window.

For a moment, Emma thought he was watching the detectives behind the glass.

Then he whispered something that made Marcus slowly sit down again.

“Your father, Marcus, discovered that someone inside his own family had been moving money for years.””

Marcus swallowed.

“Who?””

Richard's eyes settled on Emma.

“Your fiancée's father wasn't the only person with access to those accounts. The original ledger identifies the second person who signed the transfers.””

May you like

He pushed the brass key toward them.

“And that person is the reason Victoria tried to destroy the evidence today.””
