Chapter 8: The Father Who Left Instructions

The letter was dated three days before Daniel Cross's death.

Marcus sat in his father's chair while Detective Harris arranged for the letter to be photographed and examined. The room smelled of old leather and polished wood. Outside, the afternoon sun was beginning to turn golden, but Marcus barely noticed.

He read the letter aloud.

Marcus,

There are things I should have told you years ago. I believed that keeping you away from my business would keep you safe. I was wrong.

Someone has been moving money through accounts that appear to belong to you. You did not authorize these transfers. I have the original records.

Marcus stopped reading.

His hand trembled.

Emma sat beside him.

“Keep going.””

He swallowed.

If I am accused of a crime, do not assume the evidence is genuine. If I am reported dead, do not assume the person who reports it has told you the truth.

Marcus lowered the paper.

“Dad knew.””

Richard stood near the bookshelves, his face drawn.

“He suspected someone was preparing to frame him.””

Marcus continued.

*There is a recording of the argument in my study. It contains the names of everyone involved. I have made two copies.

One is hidden here. The other is with someone I trust.*

Do not trust the edited version. Do not trust anyone who insists that the matter must remain inside the family.

The final paragraph was written in a different ink.

And Marcus, if your mother tells you that I betrayed her, ask her why she signed the transfer dated October 14.

Marcus stared at the page.

“October 14. That's the day before he died.””

Harris leaned forward.

“Do you know what transfer he's referring to?””

Richard shook his head.

“Not without the ledger.””

Emma looked toward the hidden compartment.

“What about the cassette recorder?””

The evidence technician examined the device and confirmed that it could be preserved and played using appropriate equipment. After photographing its condition and documenting the chain of custody, the investigators arranged to extract the recording.

While they waited, Marcus turned toward Richard.

“Did my father know you were helping him?””

“Yes.””

“Did he know you were going to disappear?””

Richard hesitated.

“Daniel asked me to leave the country if he couldn't expose the scheme. He thought I might be safer somewhere Victoria couldn't reach me.””

“You could have taken me with you.””

“I could have,” Richard said quietly.

“But I believed the threats against your daughter would be carried out if I took action. I chose to disappear instead.””

Marcus looked away.

Emma saw how deeply that answer hurt him.

Richard had lost years with his daughter. Marcus had lost his father. Neither man had intended to cause the damage that followed, but good intentions had not protected anyone.

The evidence technician returned with a laptop.

“We've recovered a recording,” she said.

“It's approximately six minutes long.””

Harris nodded.

“Play it.””

Static filled the study.

Then Daniel's voice emerged.

“Peter, the accounts are frozen. You can't move another dollar without my authorization.””

Peter Cross answered, sounding irritated.

“You don't understand what you've done. The company is exposed.””

“The company is exposed because you've been stealing from it.””

“I was protecting the family.””

“You were protecting yourself.””

A chair scraped.

Then Victoria spoke.

“Both of you need to stop.””

Marcus's fingers curled around the armrest.

Daniel continued.

“Victoria, the transfer from October 14 was made through the account in Marcus's name. I never approved it.””

“You signed the authorization,” Victoria replied.

“No, I didn't.””

“You're making this worse.””

“Someone forged my signature.””

A pause followed.

Then Peter said, “We can correct the records.””

Daniel's voice rose.

“Correct them? My son is being set up to take responsibility for a crime he didn't commit!””

Emma closed her eyes.

The recording continued.

Victoria spoke more softly.

“Daniel, think about what will happen if the board learns that your own family has been moving money illegally. Your son will be dragged into this. Your company will collapse. Everything you built will disappear.””

“Then let it disappear.””

“You would destroy your son's future?””

“I would rather he lose every dollar than spend his life living inside a lie.””

Marcus bent forward, covering his mouth with one hand.

Emma reached for him.

He took her hand without looking away from the speaker.

Daniel's voice softened.

“Victoria, I loved you. I trusted you with everything.””

“Then trust me now.””

“I can't.””

A loud impact interrupted the recording.

Someone shouted.

The audio broke into static.

Then a new voice spoke.

It was Victoria again, but her tone had changed completely.

“Peter, if he goes to the police, neither of us survives this.””

Peter replied, “Then he doesn't go.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Marcus stood abruptly and walked to the window.

“My mother knew about the forged signature. She knew Peter was moving money through my accounts.””

Harris closed the laptop.

“The recording supports that conclusion, but we still need to authenticate it and corroborate the transactions.””

Marcus turned.

“What else do you need? She threatened Emma. She had the pool cover overridden. She tried to force an unknown substance into her.””

“We have evidence connecting her to the pool system, but we need the complete technical records and testimony. The vial must also be analyzed.””

Emma looked at the hidden compartment.

“There was supposed to be a second copy of the recording.””

“Yes,” Harris said.

“Daniel mentioned someone he trusted.””

Richard's expression changed.

“I think I know who.””

He crossed to the bookshelves and removed a framed photograph of Daniel, Richard, Victoria, and a younger woman in a security uniform.

“That's Naomi Price,” Richard said.

“She worked as Daniel's executive assistant. She handled his private appointments and kept his personal records.””

Marcus frowned.

“I remember her. She left the company after Dad died.””

“She was the last person Daniel told me he trusted with the backup.””

“Where is she now?”” Emma asked.

“I don't know. She disappeared shortly after the funeral.””

Harris photographed the image.

“We'll locate her.””

Before he could make another call, Elena entered the study.

“Mrs. Cross has arrived.””

Marcus stiffened.

“She's here?””

“She came through the main entrance with her attorney. She says she wants to speak with her son privately.””

Harris immediately instructed the officers to keep Victoria in the reception area until they could question her formally.

But Marcus was already walking toward the door.

“Marcus,” Emma called.

He stopped.

“Don't let her turn this around on you.””

He looked at her.

“She raised me.””

“I know.””

“She was the person who sat beside my bed when I had nightmares. She taught me how to tie a tie. She was the one who told me my father loved me even when he was angry.””

Emma stepped closer.

“And she may still have loved you. That doesn't make what she did acceptable.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“I don't know how to confront someone who was both my mother and the person who might have destroyed my father.””

“You don't have to decide what she means to you today. Just ask her the questions she has avoided.””

Marcus nodded.

They returned to the reception hall together.

Victoria stood beside a marble table, still wearing her cream dress. Her hair was immaculate, and her lawyer held a leather folder against his chest.

She looked at Marcus first.

“My son.””

He didn't move toward her.

“Did you know Peter was using my name to move money?””

Victoria's expression barely changed.

“You don't understand the circumstances.””

“Did you know?””

“I knew your father was making accusations that could destroy the company.””

“Did you sign the transfer dated October 14?””

Victoria's eyes flicked toward the lawyer.

“I'm not discussing confidential family business in front of investigators.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“You used to tell me that honesty was the foundation of a man's character.””

“I was trying to teach you how the world works.””

“No. You were teaching me how to obey you.””

For the first time, Victoria's composure cracked.

She turned toward Emma.

“This is what you've done. You've taken my son and poisoned him against his own family.””

Emma held her gaze.

“Your son jumped into a pool to save me. You watched us struggle and then threatened me with a vial. You don't need me to poison anyone against you.””

Victoria's face hardened.

“You have no idea what I sacrificed to keep this family alive.””

“Then explain it.””

Victoria opened her mouth.

For one second, Emma thought the truth might finally emerge.

Instead, Victoria looked at Marcus.

“If you continue this investigation, you will discover something about your father that you will never forgive.””

Marcus's expression went cold.

“Tell me.””

Victoria leaned toward him.

“Daniel wasn't the man you remember.””

She turned toward her attorney.

“We're leaving.””

Harris stepped forward.

“Mrs. Cross, you need to remain available for questioning.””

Victoria stopped.

Then she smiled at Marcus with a sadness that looked almost genuine.

“Ask Richard what happened the night your father died. Ask him why Daniel was alone when the car left the road.””

Richard's face went white.

Marcus turned toward him.

“What is she talking about?””

Richard's lips parted, but no answer came.

Victoria watched them both.

Then she delivered the final blow.

“Your father didn't die because Peter wanted the money. He died because someone he trusted helped him disappear.””

She walked out before anyone could stop her.

Marcus turned to Richard.

“Tell me she lied.””

Richard looked at Emma.

Then he lowered his head.

May you like

“I didn't kill Daniel,” he whispered.

“But I did help him leave the mansion that night.””
