Chapter 10: The Secret Behind the Nursery Wall
“Your father knew Daniel was dangerous before you married him?””
I stared at Eleanor.
She nodded slowly.
“He knew Daniel had been recruited by Victor Kane. But he didn't know how far the arrangement went until it was almost too late.””
Andrew paced across the living room.
“Why didn't Dad stop the wedding?””
“He tried,” Eleanor answered.
I looked at her.
“What do you mean?””
She walked toward an old cabinet and removed a small wooden box.
Inside were several photographs, letters, and a folded newspaper clipping.
She handed me the clipping.
It showed my father standing outside a courthouse with Daniel.
The date was eight years earlier.
Three months before our wedding.
The headline read:
*BENNETT CAPITAL FACES LAWSUIT OVER MISSING INVESTMENT FUNDS.*
I frowned.
“Why was Daniel there?””
“Because he was the person who introduced Victor's legal team to your father,” Eleanor explained.
“He was supposed to negotiate a settlement.””
Andrew shook his head.
“But instead, he helped Victor gain access to confidential financial information.””
I looked at the photograph again.
Daniel appeared younger, but his smile was unmistakable.
“What did Dad discover?””
Eleanor took another document from the box.
“This.””
It was a letter written by my father.
Eleanor,
I have made a terrible mistake.
Daniel Carter is not simply working for Victor. He has been placed near Sophia deliberately. Victor believes that if Daniel marries her, he can eventually gain control of the family trust.
I have tried to stop the wedding, but Sophia believes she loves him. If I tell her the truth without proof, I may lose her completely.
I have moved the original ownership records to the nursery. Nobody will think to look there.
If anything happens to me, please protect our daughter.
I read the letter twice.
My father had known.
He had known Daniel was using me.
And he had allowed the wedding to happen anyway.
“Why didn't he tell me?”” I whispered.
Eleanor took my hand.
“Because he believed he could protect you without destroying your happiness.””
I pulled my hand away.
“He let me marry a man who was planning to steal my inheritance.””
“He made the wrong decision,” Andrew said quietly.
“But he was trying to protect you.””
I looked at my brother.
“And you? You knew Daniel was dangerous. You watched me marry him.””
Andrew lowered his head.
“I thought I could keep him away from the company. I thought if I stayed close enough, I could stop him.””
“Instead, you disappeared.””
He didn't defend himself.
I turned toward Eleanor.
“Where is the nursery?””
She pointed toward the staircase.
“Second floor. The last room on the left.””
We went upstairs.
The house smelled faintly of cedar and old furniture polish.
At the end of the hallway stood a white wooden door.
Eleanor opened it.
The room was small.
A pale-blue crib stood beside the window. There were faded curtains, a rocking chair, and a collection of children's books on a shelf.
I looked at the room.
“Why was this kept?””
Eleanor smiled sadly.
“Your father built it for you before you were born. He used to sit in that chair and imagine reading bedtime stories.””
I approached the rocking chair.
A tiny wooden horse rested on the seat.
I picked it up.
On the bottom was a handwritten inscription.
*For Sophia. My greatest reason to come home. Dad.*
My eyes filled.
For a moment, I could almost imagine him sitting there.
Then Andrew called from the far wall.
“Sophia. Look at this.””
He had moved a bookshelf slightly.
Behind it was a narrow wooden panel.
There was no handle.
Eleanor stepped closer.
“Your father showed me how to open it.””
She pressed three small sections of the wooden frame.
A faint click sounded.
The panel moved inward.
Behind it was a hidden compartment.
Inside sat a metal box.
Andrew carefully lifted it out.
The lock was old-fashioned, with a combination dial.
I examined it.
“Do you know the combination?””
Eleanor nodded.
“Your father's birthday.””
Andrew turned the dial.
Nothing.
He tried my birthday.
Nothing.
Then he entered the date of my mother's death.
The lock clicked.
The box opened.
Inside were three folders, a small encrypted drive, and a sealed envelope.
The first folder contained original ownership certificates.
The second contained bank records.
The third was labeled:
*DANIEL CARTER — CONTINGENCY FILE.*
I opened it.
The first page was a photograph of Daniel entering a building with Victor Kane.
The second showed him meeting Martin.
The third contained copies of emails.
One message caught my attention.
*Subject: Marriage Timeline*
Victor,
The wedding is confirmed. Once Sophia signs the marital financial agreement, we will have a path toward the controlling shares.
Richard remains suspicious, but I believe he can be managed.
Daniel.
I felt nauseated.
I turned another page.
There were photographs of Daniel meeting Vanessa.
But these were dated before he and I were married.
I stared at them.
“Vanessa wasn't the first.””
Andrew looked over my shoulder.
“No.””
There were names.
Payments.
Travel arrangements.
Several women.
Daniel had been living a double life long before our wedding.
Then I found the final page.
A document titled:
*CONDITIONAL MARRIAGE AGREEMENT.*
My father's signature appeared at the bottom.
But something was different.
This agreement contained a clause stating that Daniel would receive no financial benefit from the marriage unless I independently approved a specific trust restructuring.
I looked at Andrew.
“Dad knew about the plan.””
“He knew enough to prepare a trap.””
I turned the page.
There was a handwritten note.
Daniel must believe he is winning. If he attempts to take control, the entire arrangement becomes void, and the original trust automatically transfers to Sophia.
I looked at the document.
“Then why did he still have access to everything?””
“Because Dad wanted Daniel to expose himself,” Andrew said.
A terrible thought entered my mind.
“Was Dad planning to use me as bait?””
Andrew didn't answer.
Eleanor looked away.
I stepped back.
I had spent my entire life believing my father had left me a company.
Perhaps he had left me a war.
My phone rang.
Renee.
I answered.
“Where are you?””
“Sophia, I have the original trust documents. I can prove the transfer is invalid.””
“I've found Dad's contingency file.””
A sharp breath came through the phone.
“You found the nursery?””
“Yes.””
Silence.
Then Renee whispered:
“Don't open the sealed envelope.””
I looked down.
The envelope was in my hand.
“How do you know about it?””
“Because your father gave me instructions.””
“What instructions?””
“To destroy it if Daniel ever came looking for the documents.””
I looked at the envelope.
It had my name written across the front.
*Sophia — Only open when you know who your father really was.*
I tore it open.
Inside was a single photograph.
My father stood beside Victor Kane.
Beside Victor was a young woman.
A woman who looked exactly like me.
On the back, my father had written:
*The first daughter. The one Victor believes is dead.*
I stared at the photograph.
Then I looked at Eleanor.
“Who is this woman?””
Eleanor's face drained of color.
Andrew slowly sat down.
May you like
Finally, Eleanor whispered:
“Your twin sister.””
