Chapter 14: The Last Signature
I couldn't speak.
Daniel had spent years trying to steal control of Bennett Capital.
And now Renee was telling me he had legal authority to activate my father's final contingency.
“How?”” I demanded.
Renee's voice was low.
“Your father created a separate emergency clause. It could only be activated if the company faced an attempted hostile takeover.””
“And Daniel?””
“He was named as the temporary custodian of the contingency documents.””
I closed my eyes.
“Why would Dad give him that authority?””
“He didn't give it to him willingly. The clause was part of the original agreement Daniel presented before your wedding. Richard believed it was a harmless safeguard. He didn't realize Daniel had inserted a second page.””
I looked at Andrew.
He had heard everything.
“Can Daniel take the company?””
“Not exactly,” Renee replied.
“But he can freeze the controlling shares for seventy-two hours. During that period, Victor can force a sale through the emergency board provisions.””
“How do we stop it?””
“Find the original signed copy. The one in your father's handwriting. It contains a handwritten cancellation clause.””
I looked at the estate.
“It's inside.””
“No,” Renee said.
“The copy in the nursery was incomplete. Richard divided the document into two parts.””
“Where is the second part?””
Renee hesitated.
“Your father gave it to me.””
I froze.
“You have it?””
“Yes.””
“Then bring it.””
“I can't. Martin knows where I live. Daniel has people watching me.””
I looked at Andrew.
“We'll come to you.””
“No. There's something else.””
“What?””
Renee took a shaky breath.
“The cancellation clause requires the signatures of all three surviving beneficiaries.””
I frowned.
“Me, Andrew, and Renee.””
“Yes.””
“And if we sign?””
“The emergency authority disappears. Daniel loses the power to freeze the shares.””
I looked toward the road.
“Then we're going to finish this tonight.””
We met Renee at a small private office near the river.
She was waiting with a brown envelope.
For the first time since I had known her, she looked frightened.
Andrew stood by the door.
Eleanor sat beside Vanessa.
I approached Renee.
“Give me the document.””
She handed it over.
Inside was an original agreement bearing my father's signature.
The second page contained a handwritten note:
Any emergency authority granted to an outside party shall immediately become void upon written objection by all surviving beneficiaries. No marriage, contract, proxy, or financial arrangement shall override this provision.
I looked at Renee.
“Why didn't you tell me about this before?””
She lowered her eyes.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of Daniel?””
“Of what would happen if you learned who I was.””
I stared at her.
“You mean that you're my sister?””
She nodded.
“I knew before you did.””
The room went silent.
“I found out three years ago,” she continued.
“Your father left a letter explaining our adoption. He asked me to protect you, but he also asked me never to reveal the truth unless the trust was threatened.””
“And you agreed?””
“Yes.””
“Then you watched Daniel steal from me.””
“I was trying to gather evidence.””
“You signed the forged document.””
“I signed the witness section of a temporary protection agreement. Daniel altered the rest.””
I studied her face.
“Why should I trust you?””
“Because I could have taken the money years ago. I could have used my position to claim a share. I never did.””
I looked at Andrew.
He nodded slightly.
“She helped me find the evidence against Martin.””
I wanted to believe them.
But trust was no longer something I gave freely.
I placed the document on the table.
“Then sign.””
Renee signed first.
Andrew signed second.
I was about to sign when Vanessa's phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
“It's Daniel.””
I shook my head.
“Don't answer.””
But the phone rang again.
Then a message appeared.
*You have ten minutes to return the original ledger. Otherwise, your baby goes to the police as an abandoned child.*
Vanessa went pale.
“What does that mean?””
Renee looked at the message.
“Daniel has filed an emergency custody petition.””
“What?””
“He's claiming Vanessa is unstable and intends to disappear with the child.””
Vanessa began shaking.
“He can't do that.””
“He can try,” Renee said.
“Especially if he has the medical records and your private messages.””
I stood.
“He's using the baby as leverage.””
Vanessa nodded.
“He told me he wanted the child because it would give him another connection to the Bennett family.””
Renee looked at her.
“Then we need to establish paternity and expose his fraud.””
Vanessa hesitated.
“There is something I haven't told you.””
I turned.
“What?””
She reached into her bag and removed a small envelope.
“Daniel gave me this before I left him.””
Inside was a hospital document.
A DNA test.
The result showed that Daniel was the child's biological father.
But there was a second page.
It listed another sample.
The sample belonged to Victor Kane.
I frowned.
“Why would Victor have a DNA test?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Because Daniel told me the child could be used to prove Victor's connection to the Bennett family.””
I looked at Renee.
“That makes no sense.””
She examined the document.
Then her expression changed.
“This test isn't a paternity test.””
“What is it?””
“It's a kinship comparison.””
She pointed to the result.
The child was genetically related to Victor.
But not through Daniel.
Through Vanessa.
I stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa's face crumpled.
“My mother was adopted. I never knew who my biological father was.””
Renee looked up.
“Vanessa, do you know your mother's birth name?””
Vanessa whispered it.
Eleanor stood so suddenly her chair fell backward.
“No,” she said.
Vanessa turned.
“What?””
Eleanor approached her slowly.
“Your mother was Margaret Reed?””
Vanessa nodded.
Eleanor covered her mouth.
“Margaret was my younger sister.””
The room went silent.
Vanessa stared at Eleanor.
“So Victor Kane is my biological grandfather?””
Eleanor nodded.
I felt sick.
Daniel hadn't just married into the Bennett family for money.
He had fathered a child with a woman whose family was connected to Victor.
And Victor had known.
The baby wasn't merely leverage.
The child was part of a much larger inheritance scheme.
Renee looked at the document again.
“There's a date on this test.””
I leaned closer.
It had been ordered two weeks before Daniel's birthday dinner.
Two weeks before I revoked his card.
I remembered the insult.
The laughter.
The way he had called me a pig.
And suddenly I understood.
He hadn't been angry because his card had been declined.
He had been angry because I had destroyed the financial arrangement he believed would make him untouchable.
My phone rang.
A new message appeared.
A video.
Daniel sat in the old Bennett estate, holding a glass of whiskey.
Behind him stood Victor.
Daniel smiled into the camera.
“Congratulations, Sophia. You found the truth.””
He raised his glass.
“But you're too late.””
He turned the camera toward a table.
On it lay the original ownership ledger.
And beside it was a document with my father's signature.
Daniel leaned closer.
“Your father didn't just leave me emergency authority.””
May you like
His smile widened.
“He left me the company.””
