Chapter 15: The Birthday Gift He Never Expected

I watched the video again.

Then I noticed something.

The signature on the document looked wrong.

Not obviously wrong.

Not to someone who had never studied my father's handwriting.

But I had spent years signing contracts beside him.

I knew the way he crossed the letter R.

I knew how he pressed too hard at the end of his signature.

This one was different.

“It's forged,” I said.

Renee took the phone.

She studied the document.

“Possibly. But we need the original.””

Andrew stood.

“Then we go back.””

Eleanor shook her head.

“No. We go together.””

Vanessa looked at us.

“What about my baby?””

Renee placed a hand on her shoulder.

“I've already contacted a family court attorney. We'll submit the DNA results and the evidence of Daniel's threats. He won't get custody through intimidation.””

Vanessa wiped her eyes.

“I don't want him near my child.””

“Then we make sure he can't use the child as a weapon.””

I looked at the ownership document again.

Daniel had one advantage.

He believed I was still fighting for the company.

He didn't understand that I had already discovered something more important.

The company was not the prize.

The truth was.

We returned to the estate with a plan.

Renee contacted the board's independent counsel. Andrew sent copies of the financial records to investigators. Eleanor gave a formal statement about Victor's threats and the separation of her children.

I carried the original trust document.

At the gates, two security guards tried to stop us.

I stepped forward.

“My name is Sophia Bennett Carter. This is my family's property. Move.””

They hesitated.

Then one recognized me.

The gates opened.

Inside, Daniel was waiting.

Victor stood beside him.

Martin was nowhere to be seen.

Olivia sat on the stairs.

Her face was bruised.

I rushed toward her.

“Are you hurt?””

She looked away.

“I'm fine.””

Eleanor approached her.

“Sweetheart.””

Olivia flinched.

“Don't.””

Eleanor stopped.

“I know you have every reason to hate me.””

“I don't hate you.””

Olivia's eyes filled.

“I hate that I wanted him to love me.””

Victor stepped forward.

“Enough emotional theater.””

I looked at him.

“Where is Martin?””

“Gone.””

“Where?””

Victor smiled.

“You have bigger problems.””

Daniel placed the ownership document on the table.

“Sign the transfer, Sophia.””

I walked toward him.

“Why?””

“Because you have no choice.””

I looked around the room.

“Actually, I do.””

I placed the original trust agreement beside his document.

Renee stepped forward.

“Under the original beneficiary clause, all surviving beneficiaries must approve any transfer of controlling authority.””

Daniel glanced at her.

“You have no standing.””

Renee opened the registry.

“I'm a legally recognized adopted child of Richard Bennett. My standing is recorded in the original trust.””

Daniel's expression changed.

Andrew placed his signed objection on the table.

I added mine.

Renee added hers.

Three signatures.

Three surviving beneficiaries.

The emergency authority was void.

Daniel stared at the documents.

“You can't do that.””

“We just did,” I replied.

Victor grabbed the papers.

“This is meaningless.””

Renee smiled faintly.

“Not when the original documents are already registered with independent counsel.””

Daniel turned toward Victor.

“You said this would work.””

Victor's face hardened.

“Don't blame me for your incompetence.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Is that what you wanted? To take everything?””

He laughed bitterly.

“I wanted what I deserved.””

“You deserved a life you built yourself.””

“I gave you ten years!””

“You spent ten years pretending to love me.””

His expression twisted.

“You think I enjoyed living with you? Every day, I had to smile, pretend, listen to you talk about your father and your precious company.””

I stared at him.

“You didn't have to stay.””

He stepped closer.

“I had no choice. Your father made sure I couldn't walk away with nothing.””

I frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Daniel laughed.

“Ask him.””

He pointed at the portrait of my father above the fireplace.

“Your father knew everything. He knew I was sent to marry you. He knew Victor wanted the company. But he also knew I had something he needed.””

“What?””

Daniel's smile disappeared.

“Your father's final recording.””

He pulled a small device from his pocket.

“I've kept it all these years. The recording you heard earlier was edited.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Play it.””

Victor snapped, “Daniel, don't.””

Daniel ignored him.

He pressed a button.

My father's voice filled the room.

“Daniel, if you're hearing this, then I failed to protect Sophia.””

A pause.

“I know what Victor promised you. I know he has used your debts, your family, and your fear to control you.””

Daniel's face went pale.

My father continued.

“But I also know you have a choice. You can destroy my daughter, or you can help me protect her.””

The recording crackled.

Then came a sentence that changed everything.

“If you choose to help her, the money in the Northbridge account will be yours to keep. It is compensation for the danger you have been placed in. But if you betray her, every payment will be traced, and the truth will be released.””

I stared at Daniel.

“What?””

He looked down.

My father had known Daniel was being manipulated.

He had offered him a way out.

A chance to confess.

A chance to leave.

But Daniel had chosen the money.

He had chosen Victor.

And he had chosen to hurt me.

The recording continued.

“Daniel, I hope you make the right decision. Sophia deserves better than the life you are planning to give her.””

The device stopped.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Daniel laughed.

A hollow, broken sound.

“He knew,” he whispered.

“He knew everything.””

I looked at him.

“Yes.””

“And you still married me.””

“I married the man you pretended to be.””

He shook his head.

“You think you've won?””

“No,” I said.

“I think I've finally stopped losing.””

Outside, sirens approached.

Renee had sent the complete evidence package to investigators before we entered the house.

Victor tried to move toward the back door.

Olivia stepped into his path.

“Don't.””

He stared at her.

“Move.””

“No.””

For the first time, she looked directly at him without fear.

“You told me I was your daughter. You told me you rescued me. But you never wanted a daughter. You wanted a weapon.””

Victor raised his hand.

Olivia didn't move.

Eleanor stood beside her.

Then the front doors opened.

Investigators entered.

Victor Kane was taken into custody alongside Daniel and Martin, who was apprehended shortly afterward while attempting to leave the country.

The forged documents, financial transfers, medical records, and original recording became the foundation of a criminal investigation.

Daniel looked at me as officers led him away.

“Sophia!””

I turned.

He looked almost like the man I had married.

Almost.

“Do you remember my birthday?”” he asked.

I stared at him.

“Of course.””

“You ruined it.””

I shook my head.

“No, Daniel. I gave you exactly what you wanted.””

He frowned.

“What?””

I held up my phone.

“Your card was declined because I finally stopped paying for the lie.””

His face crumpled.

I walked away.

Six months later, Bennett Capital had a new board, independent auditors, and a completely rebuilt financial oversight system.

The missing money was being recovered through the courts.

Renee became chair of the trust oversight committee.

Andrew returned to the company, this time with no secrets and no private arrangements.

Eleanor moved into the family estate.

Olivia didn't forgive everyone overnight. Neither did I.

But she started visiting.

Sometimes we talked for hours.

Sometimes we sat together without saying anything.

It was a beginning.

Vanessa gave birth to a healthy baby girl.

She named her Grace.

Daniel's parental claims were restricted by the court, and Vanessa was granted protection while the investigation continued.

One afternoon, she visited my office with Grace sleeping in her arms.

“I wanted to thank you,” she said.

I smiled.

“You don't owe me anything.””

“Yes, I do. You believed me when nobody else would.””

I looked at the baby.

“Make sure she grows up knowing she never has to earn someone's love.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I will.””

After she left, I opened the top drawer of my desk.

Inside was a photograph of my father.

Beside it was the wooden horse from the nursery.

I had kept it because I finally understood the inscription.

My greatest reason to come home.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Olivia.

*Dinner tonight? Just us. No family secrets.*

I smiled and typed back.

*Only if you choose the restaurant.*

Then another message appeared.

This one came from an unknown number.

*You think the story ended with Daniel. Ask Renee who authorized the first Northbridge payment.*

I stared at the screen.

For a moment, the old fear returned.

Then I called Renee.

She answered immediately.

“Sophia?””

“Did you authorize the first Northbridge payment?””

Silence.

A long silence.

Then she whispered:

“I was going to tell you.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Tell me what?””

Renee took a shaky breath.

“Your father didn't create Northbridge to fight Victor.””

I looked at his photograph.

“Then why did he create it?””

Her answer came quietly.

“To keep someone else from finding the money.””

“What money?””

“The original Bennett family fortune. The one that existed before your father built the company.””

I closed my eyes.

“Renee, who is looking for it?””

She whispered five words.

And this time, they frightened me more than Daniel ever had.

May you like

“Someone inside our family.””

*THE END.*
