Chapter 1 - THE ACCOUNT THAT WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO EXIST

For several seconds after Bennett said the name, nobody moved.
My mother-in-law.
The words seemed to hang in the hospital hallway like a warning.
Arthur stood beside me, his hand still resting protectively near my shoulder.
Bennett was being held several feet away by hospital security.
Margot stood beside him.
Her expensive coat was still perfectly arranged, but the confidence she had carried into the maternity ward was gone.
She looked frightened.
Not because of the security officers.
Not because Arthur had exposed the financial transfers.
She looked frightened because Bennett had finally said the one thing she had been trying to keep hidden.
I stared at my husband.
“What account?”
Bennett swallowed.
“The account is under my mother's control.”
Arthur's expression hardened.
“How long?”
Bennett looked down.
“I don't know.”
“You don't know?” Arthur asked.
“I wasn't the one who opened it.”
“Then who did?”
“My mother.”
I felt my stomach tighten.
Victoria had always been controlling.
She had criticized everything I did from the day I married Bennett.
My clothes.
My cooking.
My career.
Even the way I spoke to her son.
But I had never imagined she was secretly moving money from my accounts.
Arthur looked at me.
“Do you know how much she has taken?”
I shook my head.
“No.”
He looked toward his assistant.
“Get the full transaction history.”
The assistant immediately stepped away.
I could hear the distant sounds of nurses moving through the corridor.
A cart rolled past.
A monitor beeped somewhere behind the maternity ward.
Everything around me continued as normal.
But my world had changed.
I looked at Bennett.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
His face tightened.
“I was going to.”
“When?”
“I don't know.”
“When?”
He didn't answer.
I took a slow breath.
“You watched her take my money.”
“I didn't know everything.”
“You knew something.”
He looked away.
That was enough.
I had spent years defending him.
Every time Victoria insulted me, I told myself she was simply difficult.
Every time Bennett stayed silent, I convinced myself he was caught between his mother and his wife.
Every time money disappeared from our accounts, he told me there was a business expense.
And I believed him.
Because I loved him.
Or at least, I thought I did.
Now I wondered how much of that love had been built on lies.
Margot suddenly spoke.
“Bennett, you need to tell her.”
I looked at her.
She avoided my eyes.
“What exactly do you want me to know?”
Margot hesitated.
Then she looked at Bennett.
He shook his head slightly.
She ignored him.
“Your mother wasn't only moving money.”
Arthur's eyes narrowed.
“What else?”
Margot swallowed.
“She was preparing something.”
“What?”
“A transfer.”
My blood ran cold.
“Transfer of what?”
Margot looked at me.
“The house.”
I felt as if someone had struck me.
“Our house?”
She nodded.
“Your mother wanted the property transferred.”
“To whom?”
Margot's lips parted.
But before she could answer, the elevator doors opened.
A woman stepped into the hallway.
Victoria.
She was wearing a cream-colored coat.
Her hair was perfectly styled.
She carried a black handbag.
She looked nothing like someone who had just been exposed in a financial investigation.
She looked calm.
Almost amused.
Her eyes went immediately to me.
Then to Arthur.
Then to Bennett.
“Why is everyone standing around?”
Nobody answered.
Victoria walked closer.
“Bennett?”
Her son looked away.
Victoria's eyes narrowed.
“What happened?”
Arthur stepped between us.
“Your financial activity has been discovered.”
Victoria smiled.
“I have no idea what you're talking about.”
Arthur didn't smile.
“You will.”
She looked at me.
Then she noticed the hospital security officers.
Her expression changed.
“Why are security guards surrounding my son?”
“Because your son is under investigation.”
“For what?”
“Financial fraud.”
Victoria laughed.
“That's ridiculous.”
Arthur's voice remained calm.
“Then you won't mind answering a few questions.”
“About what?”
“An account you control.”
Victoria's eyes flickered.
Only for a fraction of a second.
But I saw it.
So did Arthur.
He turned toward his assistant.
“Bring the documents.”
Victoria looked at me.
“You have no right to accuse me.”
I finally spoke.
“You were moving my money.”
She stared at me.
“Your money?”
“Yes.”
“You mean family money.”
“No.”
I stepped forward.
“It was mine.”
Victoria's expression hardened.
“You married my son.”
“That doesn't make my inheritance yours.”
“You became part of this family.”
“And you decided that gave you the right to steal from me?”
Victoria's face reddened.
“I was protecting this family.”
Arthur laughed once.
There was nothing warm about it.
“People always call theft protection when they're caught.”
Victoria looked at him.
“You have no authority over us.”
Arthur's eyes became colder.
“I have more authority than you realize.”
She stared at him.
Then she looked at me.
“Who exactly is this man?”
I almost laughed.
“You know exactly who he is.”
Victoria frowned.
Arthur answered for me.
“Arthur Monroe.”
Recognition flashed across her face.
The hospital director.
The man whose name appeared on financial boards throughout the state.
The man Victoria had once tried to impress at a charity dinner.
She suddenly looked nervous.
Arthur turned to Bennett.
“Tell your mother what happens next.”
Bennett's voice was barely audible.
“They found the transfers.”
Victoria stared at him.
“What transfers?”
“The ones from Sophia's accounts.”
My heart stopped.
Sophia.
My maiden name.
Victoria looked at Bennett.
“You idiot.”
The hallway went silent.
Bennett flinched.
“You said you didn't know.”
Victoria realized what she had done.
She quickly recovered.
“I meant you should have been more careful.”
Arthur looked at me.
“There's your answer.”
Victoria's face hardened.
“You have no idea what you're interfering with.”
Arthur stepped closer.
“Actually, I do.”
He pulled out a tablet.
“Your account received transfers from Sophia Monroe's inheritance fund.”
Victoria's face went pale.
“Those funds were legally authorized.”
“By whom?”
“My son.”
Bennett shook his head.
“I never authorized anything.”
Victoria turned toward him.
“You signed the documents.”
“I thought they were business forms.”
Arthur looked at Bennett.
“You signed a power-of-attorney agreement.”
Bennett stared.
“What?”
“You gave your mother access to your wife's assets.”
“I didn't know.”
“You should have read what you signed.”
Bennett looked at me.
“I'm sorry.”
I shook my head.
“Sorry doesn't give me back eighteen months.”
Victoria suddenly laughed.
Everyone looked at her.
“You think this is about money?”
Arthur's eyes narrowed.
“What is it about?”
She looked at me.
“The baby.”
My hand immediately went to my stomach.
Arthur stepped closer to me.
“What about the baby?”
Victoria smiled.
“That child changes everything.”
I felt a chill.
“What do you mean?”
She looked at Bennett.
Then at Margot.
Then back at me.
“You think I wanted your money?”
I didn't answer.
“I wanted the child.”
My heart began pounding.
“Why?”
Victoria smiled.
“Because that baby belongs to this family.”
Arthur's voice turned dangerous.
“She is carrying her child.”
Victoria ignored him.
“The Carter family trust has a succession clause.”
I frowned.
“What trust?”
Bennett looked confused.
Victoria smiled.
“Your husband doesn't even know.”
Arthur's expression changed.
“What trust?”
Victoria finally looked nervous.
But she had already said too much.
“The Carter Family Legacy Trust.”
Arthur stared at her.
“Where did you learn about that?”
Victoria's eyes moved toward the floor.
Arthur stepped forward.
“Victoria.”
She didn't answer.
“Who told you?”
Still nothing.
Then Margot whispered:
“Bennett's father.”
Everyone looked at her.
Bennett's face went white.
“My father is dead.”
Margot nodded.
“I know.”
Arthur's eyes hardened.
“Then how did he tell her?”
Margot looked at Victoria.
Victoria's face had lost all color.
Margot continued.
“He left a letter.”
Bennett stared at her.
“What letter?”
Margot hesitated.
“It was supposed to be opened after the birth of the first male heir.”
I looked down at my stomach.
“What does that have to do with my baby?”
Nobody answered.
Arthur's assistant suddenly returned.
He was carrying a thick stack of documents.
“Dr. Monroe.”
Arthur took them.
He flipped through the pages.
Then stopped.
His expression changed.
“What?”
I asked.
Arthur didn't answer immediately.
He turned one page around and handed it to me.
I read the heading.
CARTER FAMILY LEGACY TRUST
Beneath it was a list of beneficiaries.
I read the names.
Then I saw mine.
Sophia Monroe Carter — Primary Maternal Beneficiary.
My heart stopped.
I looked at Arthur.
“Why is my name here?”
He didn't answer.
I continued reading.
The next clause made my hands shake.
Upon the birth of the first direct biological descendant of Sophia Monroe Carter, all controlling assets shall transfer to the child under a protected inheritance structure.
I looked at Bennett.
He was staring at the document.
“You knew about this?”
“No.”
Victoria said nothing.
I turned toward her.
“You knew.”
She looked at me.
“I knew there was an inheritance.”
“You knew my baby would inherit it.”
“Yes.”
“That's why you were taking my money.”
“No.”
“Then why?”
She smiled faintly.
“Because I needed to control the mother before the child was born.”
The words made my stomach turn.
Arthur immediately signaled security.
“Do not let her leave.”
Victoria stepped backward.
“You cannot hold me.”
“No,” Arthur said.
“But the police can.”
Sirens could already be heard outside.
Victoria looked toward the hospital entrance.
Her confidence finally disappeared.
But then she smiled.
It wasn't fear anymore.
It was something worse.
Certainty.
“You still don't understand.”
I stared at her.
“Understand what?”
She looked directly at my stomach.
“That baby is not Bennett's.”
The hallway seemed to stop breathing.
Bennett stared at her.
“What did you say?”
Victoria looked at him.
“Your wife has been lying to you.”
I felt my entire body go cold.
“That is not true.”
Victoria smiled.
“Ask her.”
Bennett looked at me.
His eyes were filled with confusion.
Then fear.
“Sophia?”
I opened my mouth.
But before I could answer, the maternity ward doors opened.
A doctor rushed toward us.
“Mrs. Carter?”
“Yes?”
He looked at me.
“We need to speak with you immediately.”
My heart pounded.
“What happened?”
“The genetic screening results came back.”
Arthur stepped forward.
“What results?”
The doctor looked at Bennett.
Then at me.
Then at the documents in Arthur's hands.
His expression became uncomfortable.
“There is something unusual about the baby's genetic profile.”
Victoria smiled.
Bennett whispered:
“What kind of unusual?”
The doctor took a breath.
“The baby carries a rare hereditary marker.”
Arthur's face changed.
“What marker?”
The doctor looked at the trust document.
Then at Victoria.
Then back at me.
“The Monroe hereditary marker.”
Silence.
My hand tightened around my stomach.
Arthur stared at the doctor.
“That is impossible.”
The doctor shook his head.
“No, Dr. Monroe.”
He looked at me.
“It's not impossible.”
Then he said something that made everyone in the hallway freeze.
“The baby isn't carrying only your family's marker.”
He looked at Bennett.
“It also carries a second marker.”
Bennett stepped forward.
“What does that mean?”
The doctor lowered his voice.
“It means we need to run a second paternity test.”
Victoria smiled.
And for the first time, I realized she hadn't been trying to destroy my marriage.
She had been trying to control the result of that test.
May you like
Because whatever the test revealed…
it could change the ownership of an entire family fortune.
