Chapter 12 - THE MAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD

The hospital security system locked down the moment the unknown vehicle entered the private entrance.

Arthur ordered everyone to remain inside.

Bennett stood beside me.

For the first time since the confrontation began, he looked less like my husband and more like a frightened man trying to understand his own life.

“Daniel Reed,” he whispered.

I nodded.

“Do you know him?”

“No.”

Arthur did.

I could see it in his face.

“Who is he?”

Arthur didn't answer immediately.

Then he said:

“Your grandfather's former business partner.”

Bennett stared.

“My grandfather?”

“Yes.”

“What does he want?”

Arthur looked at my stomach.

“Your child.”

I instinctively covered my belly.

Bennett moved closer.

“I won't let anyone near you.”

I looked at him.

“Then prove it.”

He nodded.

“I will.”

A security officer entered.

“Dr. Monroe.”

Arthur turned.

“The vehicle is registered to a private company.”

“What company?”

The officer handed him a tablet.

Arthur read the name.

His expression hardened.

“Reed Legacy Holdings.”

Bennett's face went white.

“That's impossible.”

“Why?”

“My father closed that company before he died.”

Arthur shook his head.

“Apparently someone reopened it.”

The elevator doors opened.

A tall man stepped out.

He was in his late sixties.

Silver hair.

Dark coat.

Calm eyes.

He looked directly at Bennett.

“Hello, son.”

Bennett couldn't move.

The man smiled.

“You've grown.”

Bennett's voice barely came out.

“Dad?”

The man nodded.

“Yes.”

Victoria began crying.

Arthur stepped forward.

“Daniel Reed.”

Daniel smiled.

“Arthur Monroe.”

“You're supposed to be dead.”

“I was supposed to be many things.”

Security raised their weapons.

Arthur lifted one hand.

“Don't.”

Daniel looked at me.

“So this is Sophia.”

I stepped backward.

“How do you know my name?”

“Your mother spoke about you.”

“My mother never knew you.”

“She knew me very well.”

I looked at Arthur.

He said nothing.

Daniel continued.

“She knew who your real father was.”

I felt my heart stop.

“You?”

Daniel smiled.

“No.”

He looked at Bennett.

“I am his father.”

Bennett stared.

“Then who is Sophia's?”

Daniel looked at me.

“That is the question.”

Arthur finally spoke.

“You're not getting near her.”

Daniel laughed.

“You still think you're protecting her.”

“I am.”

“You've been protecting her from the truth.”

I turned toward Arthur.

“Dad?”

Arthur closed his eyes.

Daniel smiled.

“Ask him.”

I looked at my father.

“Was Daniel my biological father?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Arthur's voice broke.

“I don't know.”

Daniel laughed.

“That is the first honest thing you've said tonight.”

Arthur stepped toward him.

“You manipulated Eleanor.”

“No.”

“You manipulated Helen.”

“No.”

“You manipulated Bennett.”

“No.”

“Then why are you here?”

Daniel's eyes moved toward me.

“Because your mother left something behind.”

“What?”

“A second trust.”

Jonathan, who had arrived with the legal team, immediately stepped forward.

“What second trust?”

Daniel smiled.

“One created before the Bennett trust.”

Jonathan's face changed.

“That's impossible.”

“No.”

Daniel pulled a document from his coat.

“It was hidden because Eleanor knew someone would try to steal it.”

I looked at the document.

My name appeared on the first page.

So did Bennett's.

And beneath them was another name.

Caroline Monroe.

My grandmother.

Daniel explained that Caroline had created an emergency inheritance structure after discovering that the family business was being secretly dismantled.

But there was a condition.

The trust would only activate when a descendant carried both the Monroe hereditary marker and the Carter lineage.

That descendant was my unborn child.

Victoria had discovered the trust months earlier.

That's why she wanted control of me.

That's why she had taken money.

That's why she had tried to destroy my marriage.

She wasn't interested in me.

She was interested in my baby.

I looked at Bennett.

“Did your mother know?”

“Yes.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You were never meant to know.”

Bennett's face tightened.

“Why?”

“Because you were never supposed to inherit.”

The words destroyed whatever remained of Bennett's certainty.

“Then what am I?”

Daniel looked at him.

“My son.”

He paused.

“But not the heir.”

I stepped closer.

“Who is?”

Daniel looked at my stomach.

“Your child.”

Victoria suddenly screamed.

“No!”

Security grabbed her.

She struggled.

“You don't understand!”

Arthur looked at her.

“Explain.”

She began crying.

“Someone promised me the trust.”

“Who?”

Victoria looked at Daniel.

He shook his head.

“I never promised you anything.”

Victoria stared at him.

“Then who did?”

Daniel's expression changed.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

“Thomas.”

Arthur went still.

I recognized the name.

Thomas.

The man connected to my mother's disappearance.

The man who had been manipulating everyone from the shadows.

Daniel whispered:

“He's alive too.”

Then every light in the hospital corridor went out.

Emergency alarms began screaming.

People shouted.

Security rushed toward the maternity ward.

Arthur grabbed my arm.

“Stay with me.”

A phone rang in the darkness.

It was Bennett's.

He answered.

Nobody spoke.

Then a distorted voice whispered:

“Congratulations.”

Bennett froze.

The voice continued.

“The baby is exactly what I needed.”

The call ended.

The lights came back.

And the maternity ward door was open.
