Chapter 14 - THE LAST NAME IN THE FILE

The police took Thomas away before dawn.
Victoria was arrested.
Daniel remained under federal investigation.
Bennett stayed beside me.
But none of us slept.
The old birth certificate sat on the table.
I couldn't stop looking at it.
My father's name wasn't there.
My mother's name was.
And the doctor's signature belonged to Daniel Reed.
Bennett finally spoke.
“Who is your father?”
I looked at my father.
He looked down.
“I am.”
“But the certificate says otherwise.”
“Because I couldn't legally claim you.”
“Why?”
“Because your mother was hiding you.”
“From whom?”
He hesitated.
“From your grandfather.”
I looked at him.
“What did he want?”
“Control.”
My father explained everything.
My mother had discovered that the family fortune was built on stolen assets.
She wanted to expose the truth.
But she was pregnant with me.
She feared that if the family knew about me, they would use me as leverage.
So she married Michael Carter publicly.
She made Richard my legal guardian.
And she created a trust that would protect me.
Michael had accepted the arrangement.
But after my mother's death, the family began manipulating the records.
Bennett's mother eventually became involved.
Thomas appeared.
Daniel disappeared.
And the truth was buried.
Until my pregnancy activated the old trust.
I looked at Bennett.
“You were never supposed to know any of this.”
“No.”
“And your mother knew.”
“Yes.”
I sighed.
“I don't know what happens to us now.”
Bennett looked at me.
“I do.”
“What?”
“I want to earn your trust again.”
I didn't answer.
He continued.
“I failed you at the hospital.”
“Yes.”
“I should have protected you.”
“Yes.”
“I believed my mother before I believed my wife.”
I looked at him.
“That hurt.”
“I know.”
“And I don't know if I can forgive you.”
“You don't have to.”
His answer surprised me.
“I'll accept whatever you decide.”
For the first time, I believed him.
Then my father walked in.
He carried another folder.
“This is the final document.”
I opened it.
It was my mother's final will.
She had left everything to me.
But there was a handwritten note.
Sophia,
If you have a child, don't give them a life built on fear.
Give them the truth.
I cried.
My father placed a hand on my shoulder.
“She knew you would survive.”
I nodded.
Then Jonathan entered.
“The trust has been activated.”
I looked at him.
“What happens now?”
“All assets are frozen for ninety days.”
“Why?”
“To allow investigators to determine which assets were obtained illegally.”
“And after that?”
“You and the child become controlling beneficiaries.”
I stared.
“And Bennett?”
“He has no controlling authority.”
Bennett nodded.
“I don't want it.”
Everyone looked at him.
“I don't want to control anything.”
He looked at me.
“I just want to be your husband.”
I wasn't ready to answer.
But I didn't walk away.
Then the phone rang.
It was the hospital.
I answered.
The doctor said:
“Mrs. Carter, you need to return immediately.”
My heart stopped.
“Why?”
“Your blood pressure has changed.”
May you like
I looked at my father.
“We're coming.”
