Chapter 8 - THE COMPANY SHARES COULD NEVER HAVE SAVED THEMThe irony?

Even if their plan worked, they couldn’t use my company shares the way they expected.
My grandfather built the trust specifically against spousal leverage.
If I became incapacitated, voting authority did not pass to Julian.
It passed to three independent trustees.
If I died before my child’s birth, the shares moved into an estate trust controlled by my sister and corporate fiduciaries.
Julian had income protections.
No control.
Diane’s entire plan rested on outdated assumptions.
Peter had reviewed an old summary, not the final trust.
Chloe thought marriage meant access.
Diane thought family meant access.
Neither understood the fortress they were attacking.
When my attorney explained this, Diane stared at him.
“So Julian would get nothing?”
“Not nothing.”
He corrected.
“He would receive certain marital assets.”
“But not Mercer Therapeutics?”
“No.”
“What about the lake house?”
“Separate trust.”
“The investments?”
“Several are protected.”
Diane sat back.
Everything she had risked was for access that never existed.
I felt no triumph.

Only exhaustion.
Greed looks especially pathetic when it destroys people chasing an unlocked door that was never there.
