Chapter 13: The Locked Room

Daniel refused to explain anything else.

He stood outside Emily's apartment with his hands pressed against the doorframe, looking like a man who had finally realized the walls were closing in.

"Tell me what your father left in that room," I demanded.

"I don't know everything.""

"Then tell me what you do know.""

"Rachel has the original company ledgers. The ownership records. The reserve account documents. Everything Dad kept separate from the regular estate.""

"Why?""

"Because she thought she could use them to control the company.""

I stared at him.

"You said she was helping you manage the business.""

"She was. At first.""

"And then?""

Daniel looked toward the elevator.

"Then she started making decisions without telling me.""

I almost laughed.

"You mean decisions like transferring my inheritance?""

He closed his eyes.

"Claire, I know what I did.""

"No, you know what you've been caught doing.""

He looked at me.

"I made terrible decisions. I thought I could fix everything before you found out.""

"By using Emily's identity? By taking money from Noah? By forging my signature?""

"I never wanted the children involved.""

"But they were involved. You made sure they were.""

His face tightened.

"Rachel told me the company was going to collapse. She said if we didn't move the money, the creditors would take everything.""

"Did you believe her?""

"I wanted to.""

That answer told me more than any confession could have.

I closed the door.

Daniel called my name as I walked away, but I didn't turn around.

The next morning, Laura arranged a meeting with the attorney handling the sale of Daniel's father's former property.

The house had been purchased by a private investment company, but the sale agreement included a clause allowing the former estate representatives to retrieve personal records stored in a locked room.

Rachel had never exercised that right.

Now we knew why.

Michael joined us, bringing copies of the property documents and the original trust appointment.

"We need to be careful," he said.

"We have no authority to search the property without permission. But we can request access under the agreement.""

Laura made the call.

After several minutes, she hung up.

"They'll allow us inside tomorrow morning. A representative from the property company will accompany us.""

I looked at her.

"Will Rachel know?""

"She'll receive notice.""

I wasn't surprised when my phone rang ten minutes later.

Rachel.

I answered.

"What do you want?""

"Daniel told me you're planning to go to Dad's house.""

"His former house.""

"Whatever you want to call it. You can't go in there.""

"Why not?""

"Those documents belong to the family.""

"Then why have you kept them locked away?""

She laughed without humor.

"You're making a mistake, Claire.""

"I've heard that before.""

"Daniel doesn't understand what Dad intended. He never did.""

"Then explain it to me.""

Silence.

Then Rachel said, "Dad knew Daniel was weak. He knew I was the one capable of keeping the business alive.""

"Is that why he appointed me?""

Her voice sharpened.

"That appointment was temporary.""

"According to the documents, it wasn't.""

"You don't understand the business.""

"You're right. I don't understand how you managed to lose more than a million dollars while telling everyone you were protecting the family.""

Rachel inhaled sharply.

"You have no idea what Victor has been dealing with.""

"Then perhaps Victor should explain it to a judge.""

She hung up.

I looked at Laura.

"She knows we're going.""

"Good," Laura replied.

"That means we're probably looking in the right place.""

The former Carter house stood on a quiet street lined with old maple trees.

It looked smaller than I remembered.

I had visited Daniel's parents there dozens of times. His father used to sit on the back porch with a cup of coffee, reading the newspaper while the children played in the yard.

Now the windows were covered.

The garden had grown wild.

A property representative named Mr. Lawson met us at the front door.

"I've been instructed to give you access to the storage room," he said.

"Nothing else.""

We entered.

The house smelled of dust and old wood.

Michael remained near the entrance while Laura and I followed Mr. Lawson down the hallway.

The locked room was at the back of the house.

A heavy wooden door stood between two built-in cabinets.

Mr. Lawson unlocked it.

Inside was a small office.

A desk.

Two filing cabinets.

A bookshelf.

And a metal safe bolted to the floor.

I stopped.

On the desk sat a framed photograph of Daniel's father.

He was smiling, one arm around a younger Daniel and the other around Rachel.

I remembered that day.

It had been taken at Emily's tenth birthday party.

My throat tightened.

Mr. Lawson pointed to the cabinets.

"These were listed in the property inventory.""

Laura began photographing everything before touching anything.

The first cabinet contained tax records and old business correspondence.

The second contained folders marked with dates.

Michael opened one labeled *Carter Financial Holdings — Ownership*.

He read the first page.

Then he looked at me.

"Claire, come here.""

I approached.

The document showed the company's original ownership structure.

Daniel and Rachel each held ten percent.

The remaining eighty percent belonged to the family trust.

I frowned.

"Didn't you say sixty percent?""

Michael checked the date.

"This is the original agreement. There was a later amendment.""

He turned the page.

A signed amendment transferred twenty percent of the trust's voting rights to me as successor trustee.

The remaining sixty percent stayed protected for Emily and Noah.

I stared at the document.

My father-in-law hadn't simply given me temporary control.

He had designed the company so Daniel and Rachel couldn't sell it without my authorization.

I looked at Laura.

"Then how did they manage to operate it?""

Michael pointed to a power-of-attorney document.

"Someone filed this.""

The document claimed I had authorized Rachel to act on my behalf.

My signature appeared at the bottom.

I recognized the date.

It was the week I had been in the hospital with my mother.

The same period as the inheritance waiver.

"Another forgery," I whispered.

Laura photographed the document.

"Yes. And this one may explain how Rachel gained access to the company accounts.""

I looked toward the safe.

"What's in there?""

Mr. Lawson shook his head.

"We don't have the combination.""

Michael examined the surrounding paperwork.

A small envelope was tucked beneath the desk drawer.

Inside was a handwritten note.

I recognized my father-in-law's handwriting immediately.

Claire, the combination is the date you married Daniel, followed by the number of grandchildren.

I stared at it.

Our wedding date was June 14, 2002.

Emily and Noah were the two grandchildren.

I entered the numbers.

061402.

The safe clicked.

Inside were three envelopes, a small notebook, and a flash drive.

The first envelope contained original stock certificates.

The second contained the trust's banking instructions.

The third was addressed to me.

I opened it.

Claire, if you have reached this room, then someone has likely tried to take control of the company without your permission.

I read on.

The company is not burdened by the debts Daniel has described. Those debts were created through separate transactions. The reserve account was established to protect the family's legitimate assets from business disputes.

My hands trembled.

I have reason to believe Rachel and Victor have been using the company name to secure private loans. Daniel may be involved, but I do not know how much he understands.

Laura leaned closer.

The next paragraph was worse.

I discovered that Rachel had arranged a second set of books. One set shows the company's actual assets. The other shows liabilities that do not belong to the company.

Michael looked up.

"Two sets of books.""

I nodded.

The final sentence was underlined.

The flash drive contains the records that prove which transactions were legitimate and which were fabricated.

I looked at the small device in my hand.

Then I heard a car door slam outside.

Mr. Lawson walked toward the window.

"Someone's here.""

A moment later, Rachel entered the house.

She was furious.

"What are you doing?""

Michael stepped forward.

"We have authorized access.""

"You have no right to touch those documents.""

Laura held up the signed access agreement.

"We have every right to retrieve the records identified in the property inventory.""

Rachel looked at the open safe.

Then she saw the flash drive in my hand.

Her expression changed.

"Put that down.""

I looked at her.

"Why?""

"Because you don't know what's on it.""

"That's why I'm going to find out.""

She stepped toward me.

Michael moved between us.

"Don't come any closer.""

Rachel stopped.

For the first time, I saw something in her face that wasn't arrogance.

Fear.

She looked at the flash drive again.

Then she whispered:

"If you open that file, you'll destroy Daniel.""

May you like

I held it tighter.

"Maybe Daniel should have thought about that before he destroyed us.""
