Chapter 5: The Woman Who Had Been Keeping Records

The next morning, I met Michael Reeves at his office.

Emily came with me.

She carried a folder containing her university travel records, emails, and copies of the documents her father had asked her to sign.

Michael greeted us at the reception desk.

"Mrs. Carter. Emily. Come in.""

His office was smaller than I expected. Two filing cabinets stood against one wall, and a large monitor displayed several financial documents.

He invited us to sit.

"I reviewed the material you sent last night," he said.

"Can you prove Daniel forged the signatures?"" I asked.

"Not yet. But we have enough inconsistencies to justify a formal investigation.""

Emily placed her folder on the desk.

"I was in London when they say I verified the loan.""

Michael examined her travel documents.

"This is useful. We'll need the bank's original verification records, including the method used to establish identity.""

"Can they just say I signed electronically?"" Emily asked.

"They can claim that. But they should also be able to produce the supporting authentication records.""

I looked at Michael.

"What about the account receiving the money?""

He turned his monitor toward us.

"The account was opened under Emily's name, but the contact email and recovery phone number belong to Rachel.""

Emily frowned.

"Why would my aunt have access?""

"That's one of the questions we need answered.""

I leaned forward.

"Can we freeze the account?""

"The bank has already been notified of the dispute. We'll request preservation of all records and appropriate restrictions while the investigation proceeds.""

Michael opened another file.

"There's something else. Your husband filed a financial disclosure six weeks ago.""

I stared at him.

"Six weeks?""

"Yes. He listed several debts, but none of the accounts connected to you or Emily.""

"How could he leave them out?""

"That is precisely what the trustee wants explained.""

He slid a document across the desk.

Daniel had signed a declaration stating that he had disclosed all outstanding financial obligations and had not transferred assets to relatives in an attempt to avoid creditors.

The declaration was dated twelve days before the $210,000 withdrawal.

I felt my stomach turn.

"He knew.""

Michael nodded.

"Based on the documents we have, it appears he knew he was facing serious financial scrutiny before making the transfer.""

Emily looked down.

"Can he go to jail?""

Michael folded his hands.

"That's not something I can predict. The authorities will determine whether the evidence supports criminal charges. Our immediate priority is protecting you and establishing what happened.""

I asked the question I had been avoiding.

"Can I lose our house?""

Michael didn't offer false reassurance.

"Because your husband allegedly used the property as collateral without your authorization, you need a separate attorney to challenge the validity of the guarantee and protect your ownership interests. Do not assume the lender can enforce it, but don't ignore the risk.""

I nodded.

For the first time, I understood that getting my money back would not be as simple as confronting Daniel.

There were lenders.

Court filings.

Corporate registrations.

And signatures that looked like mine.

Michael closed the folder.

"One final thing. Has Rachel contacted either of you?""

I shook my head.

Emily looked at her phone.

"She sent me a message last night.""

I turned toward her.

"What did she say?""

Emily opened it.

*Rachel: Your father is trying to protect you. Don't let your mother ruin his life over a misunderstanding.*

I stared at the message.

Then Emily showed me another.

*Rachel: If anyone asks, you knew about the company. Your dad explained it.*

Michael leaned forward.

"Don't respond.""

Emily nodded.

He made a copy of both messages.

As we stood to leave, he said, "Mrs. Carter, I strongly recommend that you and your daughter avoid any private financial discussions with either Daniel or Rachel until we've secured the relevant records.""

I thanked him.

Outside, Emily took my arm.

"Mom, I don't want to go home.""

"You're not going home.""

"Where are we going?""

I looked at her.

"To get lunch. Then we're going to find a lawyer who represents you independently.""

She managed a small smile.

For a moment, we were simply a mother and daughter trying to figure out what to do next.

Then my phone rang.

Daniel.

I let it ring.

He called again.

Then a text appeared.

*Daniel: Rachel is coming over tonight. She wants to explain everything. Please be there.*

I showed Emily.

She shook her head.

"Don't go.""

I typed a response.

*Claire: If Rachel has something to explain, she can do it through the lawyers.*

I pressed send.

At six that evening, I returned to our house.

Not because Daniel had asked me to.

I needed my passport, some personal belongings, and the original documents from our filing cabinet.

I parked outside and noticed a black SUV in the driveway.

Rachel was already there.

I walked inside.

She sat at the kitchen island, holding a glass of wine.

Daniel stood beside the refrigerator.

Neither looked surprised.

"Claire," Rachel said.

"Finally.""

I placed my handbag on the counter.

"I told you I wasn't discussing this without lawyers.""

Rachel rolled her eyes.

"Do you really think bringing lawyers into everything is going to help?""

I looked at Daniel.

"Why is she here?""

He avoided my eyes.

"She wants to explain.""

"Then let her.""

Rachel took a sip of wine.

"First, I want you to understand that Daniel was under enormous pressure.""

"How much pressure does it take to forge your wife's signature?""

She put the glass down.

"You don't understand the business.""

"Then explain it.""

Rachel glanced at Daniel.

He gave her a small nod.

She continued.

"The first property was purchased because Daniel needed to move some money before the creditors started making claims.""

I stared at her.

"So you knew.""

"Of course I knew.""

"And you helped him.""

"I was trying to keep the family from losing everything.""

"By buying property with my retirement savings?""

Rachel leaned forward.

"Your money wasn't going to stay in the account anyway.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"What does that mean?""

She shrugged.

"Daniel had creditors. They were coming after him.""

"That doesn't give you permission to take my savings.""

"You're still thinking like this is a normal marriage problem.""

She opened her handbag and removed a thick envelope.

"Look, I brought everything.""

She pushed it toward me.

Inside were bank statements, property documents, and a handwritten list of payments.

I recognized the $38,500 transfer.

Then another payment.

$62,000.

Then $96,000.

The figures were connected to three different companies.

I looked up.

"Where did all this money go?""

Rachel crossed her arms.

"Some went to the properties. Some paid off old debts.""

"And the rest?""

Daniel finally spoke.

"Claire, that's what we're trying to sort out.""

I turned toward him.

"You're trying to sort it out now?""

Rachel laughed.

"Honestly, you should be grateful.""

I stared at her.

"Grateful?""

"Daniel could have let the creditors take everything. Instead, he found a way to preserve some assets for the family.""

I picked up the envelope.

"Then why did you buy yourself a new SUV?""

Her face hardened.

"That was compensation for my work.""

"With money borrowed using Emily's identity?""

Rachel's eyes flickered.

Daniel looked at her sharply.

I noticed.

And so did she.

"Why are you looking at me?"" Rachel snapped.

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Rachel, we agreed not to discuss Emily.""

I felt a cold shiver.

"You agreed?""

Rachel stood.

"Daniel, you need to stop making me responsible for everything.""

I looked between them.

There it was.

The first crack in their united story.

I took out my phone.

"I've already spoken to the bank and the attorney. Every document in that envelope will be reviewed.""

Rachel reached for it.

"You can't take those.""

I moved it away.

"Watch me.""

She stepped closer.

"You have no idea what you're doing.""

I met her eyes.

"Then explain why your name is on the account that received the money borrowed in Emily's name.""

Rachel went silent.

Daniel turned toward her.

"What account?""

She looked at him.

"Don't.""

His face changed.

"Rachel, what account?""

She grabbed her handbag.

"I'm leaving.""

I stepped aside.

But before she reached the door, she turned around.

"Claire, you should ask your husband what happened to the money from the second property.""

I looked at Daniel.

He was staring at his sister.

Rachel continued.

"He keeps telling you I took it. But I didn't.""

Then she opened the door and walked out.

Daniel stood motionless.

I waited.

Finally, I asked, "Where did the money go?""

He looked at the floor.

"Rachel is lying.""

"Then tell me the truth.""

He rubbed his forehead.

"I don't know.""

I stared at him.

"How can you not know?""

His voice dropped.

"Because the account was supposed to be temporary.""

"What account?""

He looked at me.

"The offshore account.""

I felt the room go silent.

"Offshore?""

He nodded.

"Someone moved the remaining money before I could get it back.""

"Who?""

Daniel's phone buzzed.

He looked at it.

Then his face went white.

He turned the screen toward me.

May you like

It was a message from Rachel.

*Rachel: If Claire finds out who really owns the offshore account, we're both finished.*
